Good Documentaries

Les Strouds "survivorman" documentaries. He puts himself in some of the most extreme places across the world with his own cameras, (no film crew whatsoever) and survives for 7 days finding his own food and water etc. Makes you realise how much of a fake Bear Grylls is when you watch these. They can be found all over youtube.

Coupla random selections from my recent(ish) viewing...

The Fishing Party: 10 Years On - absolute classic. Four cityboys go fishing for a weekend, drink a wee bit too much, speak their mind a wee bit too much, shoot various endangered species a wee bit too much etc. Fuckin' hilarious. And a bit terrifying. Kid would <3 it. (Where is TheKid of late incidentally?!?)

The Stoned Ages - watched this one last night and was somewhat pleasantly surprised. Is only a History Channel thang so expected the worst but was shockingly balanced. Actually came out more or less in favour of legalising psyches and gave a fairly reasonable account of the history of other drugs and the laws that bind them. Tis made for the US market so does have some random godstuff and AA/NA bullshit in and amongst it but overall shockingly prodrug under the circumstances. Seems to be a bit of a theme of legalising (or at least addressing the prior demonising of) psyches of late. Looks like some of those drug trials may be turning out too successful cos the tone is definitely changing recently. Goody good :)

Watched Gaslands other night about the fracking people can lighter their "drinking" water on fire 8o

Another newly released Vice one on a Drug in Colombia thats "used to rape and rob victims when they are fully concious and aware, they look fine and can be controlled".

Watch to the end for some real Colombian shit....

World's Scariest Drug (Documentary Exclusive)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=ToQ8PWYnu04&has_verified=1

Not exactly sure about the drug itself though, going to have another look tommorow. More urban legend than thruth you think?

Watched that earlier. It's about scopalamine. Decent doc but strangely iffy info. You'd think Datura only exists in Colombia from the way they portray it. Admittedly, have never heard of anywhere other than Colombia that extracts the scopalamine from datura and gets as creative with its usage as they do...

Cool, i'll have to check that one out.

Esoteric science ramble coming up now - so skip this post if you're not in the mood.

I've never tried scopolamine itself, however, i have had a long history with its analogues and derivatives - and most people have too, probably more than they think anyway.

The key chemical transmitter here is acetylcholine and since these drugs inhibit this, they are called anticholinergics. I have suffered fromIBS for mang years and found that anticholinergics are the only thing that really works. Theres an old school heavyweight called dicycloverine, as well as an over the counter one called buscopan. They are very unpleasant psychologically, turn you into a shell, kinda like a pill comedown. I sometimes take these on acid, as that really gives my severe cramps, but it does make for a sombre trip - very empty and generally uncomfortable, though still a powerful experience.

Aside from IBS meds, anticholinergic effects are everywhere, and often are thd key to a drugs popularity. Amitryptalline is a big one. Ever taken a dose to get to sleep, and woken up the next day, too tired to get out of bed but too uncompfortable to just lie there and relax. I still use amitryptalline to knock me out, but only if i cant afford benzos. Another one is diphdnhydramine / nytol. I use this fairly regularly as am on a tight budget, but it rarely fails to put me on a downer about my life and is no really a pleasant experience trying toget to sleep on either. Thats why it has such a low abuse potential - the anticholinergic effects make you feel like shit.

A few Colombians chimed in in discussions elsewhere to say that that doc was very sensationalised and it was hardly common to be dosed as you walked down the street - more likely after you'd been on a drinking bender for a few days, as Colombians are allegedly often inclined to do.

Very entertaining but to be taken with a pinch of salt.

Life after people

really interesting doc showing you what the world will be like when we are gone

I enjoyed this one a lot too. If anyone that hasnt seen it liked films such as 'I Am Legend' they will probably like this. Fascinating stuff. Plenty of geeky facts such as that the concrete in The Hoover Dam hasnt even finished setting yet, and it is predicted to be the remnant of Mankind that survives longer than any other. I forget how many thousands of years it was expected to last after people were gone.

Are you on about the Pitchfork thing yeah ?

Jay Dilla is amazing as well

I haven't heard that. I've been listening to his XXX album all day. He says bitch a little too much even for a rapper, but apart from that he comes out with some crackers. One I heard earlier was "yo baby mother begged me to suck my dick, but i aint gonna let her cus she looks like predator"

This is the one of the best Drug Docs i've ever seen by far

Planet Rock: The Story Of Hip Hop And The Crack Generation (full)

I watched that last night. Quality documentary man. I liked the bits with Rick Ross & Azie. You seen the documentary about Azie, Rich & Alpo?? I can't remember the name of it off the top of my head, something like The Real Paid In Full, I think.

MSB - I downloaded that Danny Brown album after seeing you mention it here... what complete & utter shite haha. Fucking awful rapper. I skinned a joint & dived outside with the headphones on thinking "This is good, some new tunes to get into", I was appalled at what I heard lol. The guy's garbage.

I can see why you don't like him. He doesn't come out with insanely insightful stuff that blows my mind, like money controlling the world ;) Do you dislike Aesop Rock too? I was more interested in DB as a figure who would move rap forward beyond the stale gansta rap.

I don't think he's the saviour of hip hop or anything like that. He's just one of the first alt rappers to get serious air time for once.
