The problem with that argument is Hines is a different WR than anyone before him. His style is what actually may set him apart.

Sorry to shoot a hole in your example (pun intended).....but Burress and any of those other Giant WRs will only be ticket holders for Canton.

I don't expect any of them to get into the HoF. I was just using them as an example of what kinds of players generally get in. The day-in, day-out, hard working solid WRs are overlooked by the deep threat WRs that have less receptions but more touchdowns. The last sentence of that post had clarified that.

Ward has two SB rings, one SB MVP, two great records in the NFL WR records book, and universal relevance and appeal (Dancing With the Stars, the White House affiliation, and love/hate relationships to his fans/enemies)... these facts should get him easily into Canton, Ohio. first ballot? I don't think he's that popular, but I do think he won't have a difficult road to the HoF ahead of him

I feel like you guys are discounting him because you haven't seen him at the top of his game the last 2-3 years. before that, Hines Ward was a BEAST. and the Steelers pre-Big Ben era were not a passing offense to say the least (ground and pound with Bettis). the fact that he put up great yards in a system like that speaks double, imo...

wyld, i guess (surprise, surprise) that we're just going to have to agree to disagree on this one.

the second article said:
Hines Ward may have been one of the greatest blocking receivers of all time...It is simply an accepted accolade that although very well may be true is a subjective measurement in a voting process based on objective statistics.

Unfortunately, what this means for Ward is that one of the key aspects that sets his game apart from his peers makes it hard to effectively gauge his greatness.

Art Monk, Michael Irvin and Jerry Rice are the only receivers in the Hall of Fame with careers starting after 1980.

Again, on the surface it seems like a lock for enshrinement until you realize that in each category the majority of players above him have two things in common. They played in the same era as Ward, and they aren't in the Hall of Fame. This is important because although his numbers are above the average NFL receiver, they are not at the top of his peers when he played.

you said it yourself: "An ability that may or may not give him the edge in getting in..."

let's revisit this thread in, oh, 15 years? :)

Enough about Hines Ward

Eagles just traded a 4th round pick and swapped 3rd rd picks with the Texans for DeMeco Ryans.

Exactly what we needed hopefully they wont mess the draft up again (chose Brandon Graham over Earl Thomas 2 years ago, wtf).

I thought it a little amusing yesterday that there was already a Google page full of articles about Ward and HoF potential and the guy hasnt even been retired for 24hrs yet. Let's read what they say again in 2017.

Jets know they arent going to win anything with The Sanchize so they are just trying to sell tickets at this point.

you waited about 2 minutes to start the hyperbolic talk of his first ballot entry into the hall of fame. are you criticising others for same?

The Jets never had a problem selling out the stadium though. Also, the radio stations here in NY are being flooded with Jets fans that think that this was the worst decision the Jets could have made.

fucking fans saying stuff like 'that's the worth decision they could have made'

just shut up and keep your day job, if you even have one

he's more than likely not even going to play, so he'll be as significant as the team's equipment manager

Did your horoscope advise you to use that word as many times as you can this week?

Bias and hyperbole are 2 different words and I admitted a bit of hyperbole (first ballot HoF). Just because I stated my reasoning and we agree to disagree about it doesnt mean it is hyperbole.

And to answer your question, no, I am not criticizing others. I was making a "hmm..interesting comment" about it. I read the story, watched the video of his press conference then logged on here to post a comment about it. I only noticed all the articles on Google when I was responding to your hyperbole! ;)

The argument is that it's going to be even harder to develop Sanchez as their QB if they have Tebow Nation calling for him to be replaced at the first sign of Sanchez sucking. Why bring that extra pressure into the organization? Do you think that the Jets WRs that were already unhappy with not getting passed to much are happy with acquiring an even worse passer? It just doesn't make any sense, especially since the Jets already have some backup QBs that can run the option or the wildcat.

wyld, where's axl to back you up? he's conspicuous by his silence on this matter. i'm guessing it's because even he agrees with me! axl, you there?

eagles always find a way to fuck up their entire season, be patient.

yeah QFT. Jeffrey Lurie's press conference basically was "Last season was unacceptable, for a team with as much talent as we have theres no reason we shouldnt have been in the playoffs. Oh and btw all the coaches are coming back"

like it was unacceptable but nobody got fired, how does that happen?
