The city I live in is advocating this...

http://www.roanoke100miler.com/

Some friends and I doing it on our own and not paying the entry fee.

Join us in the challenge and report back.

Does anyone use the RunKeeper app? I see some of my facebook friends use it.

Hmmm, maybe I should upgrade to a smartphone in 2012 :)

That is pretty cool. I should start keeping track of my mileage... my dad does and he just puts it in an excel sheet and makes a chart with it at the end of the year. Pretty neat to look at your accomplishments. Then you can compare year to year as well.

Sweet that's really cool. With the other threads on BL 'group fitness' (lol) such as the pull up thread and the push up thread... Maybe in 2012 we could do something like this. Like we all track our mileage of whatever we do... walking, running, hiking, riding, etc. And then at the end of the year we can show our results. Would anyone else be interested in doing something like this? It doesn't have to be a contest, but it could be motivation for you to do more miles each day ;) who knows.

I have an interest in this, with bicycling. Unfortunately, I won't be able to be back on my bike until mid-March at the earliest. :(

I mean, unless Buffalo continues to not have any snow for a few more weeks until my foot heals. You never know. Gonna have a green Christmas this year. /rambling

That is exactly what I am trying to do here for the time period of Jan 7th-April 15th, 2012. Indoor cycling counts too!

Seriously! I'm gonna go out on my bicicleta today, just because it's still not snowing!

As for 100 miles in 100 days, I think we can ALL do one mile a day for 100 days. Who knows how much good it'll do them!

I think this is an easy thing to achieve if you are active and a good motivator to be active in the winter.
I hike/run 10+ miles every weekend. As long as it is not pouring rain, I am out there.

I like the idea of making a thread for moving one's body over distance.
I always keep track of my time, but not my distance.
My commute to/from school makes me bicycle at least 100 km (60 miles) a week, and I try to add an hour of swimming and/or running to that as well.
It is not really fair to compare running (or hiking, or walking) with swimming or bicycling, of course.

Do we need 3 separate threads? I would vote that the run/walk/hike thread be kept separate.

Hopefully, this will inspire me to do more running.

I don't think we need separate threads. The 100 miles goes for all movement. Obviously cyclists will rack up the miles quicker.

^ Maybe triple the number, or add a zero to the end for hardcore cyclists and runners. :P

Tripling it would be a challenge, but do-able for some. I mean, last summer I was biking 14 miles 4 days a week, then 20+ on the weekends, so that's over 186 miles a month... Could easily do 300 in 100 days. Well, if I'm working the same job and have an excuse to bike 14 miles 4 or 5 days a week, lol.

I think it would be good to keep it all in one thread. I like the title of this one.

Any ideas on how we can organize it as a group? Like do we post up at the end of the week, or at the end of the month? It might get too crazy if we post miles every day. This could be different than the pushup/pullup threads in that everyone keeps their own mile count, not as a group. I think that makes it a little different, and its more based on personal achievement. Then you can see how your own mileage varies per month or whatever.

I really like this idea! :D

Re: the smartphone question, Run Keeper is a fantastic application. It gives you verbal updates as you go (distance, average speed) every 10 minutes, an you're able to 'pause' the activity to rest. Once you click 'stop activity' it gives you a verbal report on the distance and average speed (for us Aussies, time per km). It then adds the activity to your scoresheet which contains all of your previous activities. It's so easy to compare the average speed and really see if you're improving. :)

It also allows you to choose between cycling and running.

I have a Belkin arm-band that fits my iPhone so it's comfortable and easy to use.

Get an iPhone PI - you won't regret it. ;)

Running (and cycling) are 2 of my most hated forms of exercise. I do cycle, but it's totally for pleasure (i guess that can be a form of exercise, but things like spin/rpm bore me *so* much). I don't worry though, there are many other forms of cardio :)

In saying that, every year Australia holds a competition called the 10000 step challenge. You create teams and each day you enter in your daily steps using a pedometer or other device. I do that every year as I find i love walking (well, hiking to be specific).

I'll definitely join the 100 miles in 100 days, but will keep it to hiking/walking :)

Well I suck at keeping track of things, but I wanted to bump this thread anyway because I love it.

This week:

Sunday: 10 miles hiking
Monday: 3 miles walking
Tuesday: 2 miles walking
Wednesday: 1 mile walking
Saturday: 3 miles walking

Total: 19 miles

Damn I suck! I need to up my mileage D:

^Way to go!
I assume we are no longer facebook friends as I have the event going on there too and I haven't seen you around.

and now I got you back on fb euphoria :)

I am up to 54.8 miles with 7 more weeks to go in this challenge.
With the additional hour of sunlight we started to get I will be able to run more frequently after work.

Is anybody out there doing this or what?
