Choking game death shocks parents
A Gold Coast father tells 612 ABC Brisbane of the moment he discovered his teenage daughter's body in her room after playing 'the choking game'.

The parents of a Gold Coast girl who choked herself to death in an attempt to achieve a euphoric high have warned other parents to become aware of ‘‘the choking game’’.

Abigail Corthals, 15, was found dead in her bedroom with a belt around her neck earlier this month after attempting to gain a euphoric high through self asphyxiation.

A police investigation into her death, which was originally thought to be suicide, revealed she and her friends had been texting each other about playing ‘‘the choking game’’ in the lead up to her death.

A message from a friend prior to her death had proposed the teenagers make a pact to stop playing the game.

Distraught at his loss, father Michael Corthals told ABC 612 this morning he wanted to warn parents to ensure their children were not involved in the game which claimed the life of his spirited daughter.

‘‘We’re trying to spread the word for parents to be more open with their kids and find out why teenagers are [playing] silly games and they don’t know the consequences,’’ he said.

‘‘We talk about bullying, we talk about drugs, we talk about other things [teenagers do] but never has anyone mentioned about the choking game.’’

Mr Corthals found his daughter dead in her room after being left alone for just 30 minutes.

He said he and his wife had never heard about the game before and only found about it after searching for it on Google. The police he spoke to were also unaware of the game.

‘‘Everybody was shocked, even all our close friends we talked about it and when the police came... and they talked about it to the other teenagers a lot of kids came forward and said ‘yeah, we’ve heard of it’ and some of our close friends their kids [tried it],’’ he said.

‘‘But they usually tried together, someone choking each other, they always had somebody there. But other kids did it by themselves, and that’s what happened to Abigail.’’

In an article on Fairfax websites last year, following the death of a young British boy, experts warned parents and teachers to look out for warning signs that children were playing the choking game.

These included bloodshot eyes, bruising or marks on the neck, or visiting websites that discuss asphyxiation.

According to a feature article in Time magazine the choking game has been around in some form since the 18th century, and deaths in the US, Britain and Canada have made sporadic headlines.

But Time warned teenagers were beginning to glamorise the practice by uploading instructional videos to the internet.

According to Time the game involves applying pressure to the neck to stop blood flowing to the brain, before releasing the pressure to create a temporary sense of euphoria.

Mother Francoise told Channel 9 last night her daughter was an ‘‘adrenaline junkie’’ who ‘‘loved the thrill of things.’’

But she had no idea Abigail was taking part in such a game.

‘‘If I knew about it I would have said to Abigail I hope you don’t do something stupid like that,’’ she said.

Youth mental health researcher and clinician Patrick McGorry told ABC radio children who enjoyed taking part in safe risk-taking behaviour may be more susceptible to high risk activities such as the choking game.

For harm reduction's sake... don't do this. :|

If you want to dramatically reduce oxygen flow to your brain do it with bulbs. I put an oxygen meter on my finger while breathing in 2 bulbs to see how low it went and it got down to 65% (I was also rebreathing with a balloon). To put this in context, during a severe asthma attack where I could barely breath for hours the lowest it got was 88%.
At least if you pass out you will automatically start breathing again.

How low does oxygen saturation have to get before you start doing damage to the brain? 0%? Have seen some people that are pretty bad with nitrous bulbs, seemingly going without a good breath of air for a fair while...

Feel sorry for the parents :( most kids probably think this choking game is harmless compared to drugs I'd guess.

I don't know but good point...maybe not the best harm reduction advice.

Some quick googling shows conflicting opinions on what level of oxygen saturation starts to get risky. Some say that from 92% and below there is insufficient partial pressure to adequately oxygenate bodily tissues; others say 88% which apparently is what most insurance companies will only start to pay for oxygen at (in the USA).

To get 0% oxygen saturation would be quite a feat I imagine.

Ive heard/read of people doing this before, personally I think its sad and stupid at the same time. What people do these days to get high, I rekon most people would eat dog shit if it gave u a euphoric high haha

Clearly she forgot the piece of lemon to bite to bring her out of it. Rookie mistake. Although it doesn't sound like she was Autoerotically asphyxiating... It sounds like she was just plain old asphyxiating.

She went the same way as Michael Hutchence from INXS.

Pretty stupid thing to die for, someone needs to introduce all these kids desperate for a high to nitrous. It's cheap, legal, easily obtainable and beats the hell out of choking games or datura or deliriants or huffing paint thinner or all of that other stupid shit kids do when they can't find real drugs.

She didn't even have the good sense to finish with a wank. There is only slightly more shame for your family if they find you dead with your hand in your pants.

^^ I understand autoerotic asphyxiation, but just plain asphyxiation... I'm with you there.

What ever happened to drinking goon bags, nangs and bongs in public parks? Kids these days...

From my own personal experience with nitrous doing bulbs it would be very difficult to get to a point where you do not have enough oxygen going to your brain, usually i find your subconscious will kick in & stop you having another nitrous hit.... Sure its probably doing damage on some extent but my brain still works on some semi functioning level after about 4-5 years of doing nitrous at least once a week! I find the b12 depletion to be more of a bad side effect.

As for this chocking game thing, its been around for many years, i cant see these deaths happening if the topic was touched on a bit more in high school health education/drug education type of things but when the mentality is "drugs are bad, dont do them" then clearly people are going to turn to things like this for a quick high.

thats a pretty obnoxious thing to say about a dead 15 year old girl. You need to grow up.

One less idiot to grow up and breed in my opinion. Tragically sad yes, but idiotic and pointless. The first thing I thought about when I saw this story was if she was my child I would have been wishing I had let her smoke a spliff or even raid my booze cabinet instead.

15 is old enough to know better.
