From my own personal experience with nitrous doing bulbs it would be very difficult to get to a point where you do not have enough oxygen going to your brain, usually i find your subconscious will kick in & stop you having another nitrous hit.... Sure its probably doing damage on some extent but my brain still works on some semi functioning level after about 4-5 years of doing nitrous at least once a week! I find the b12 depletion to be more of a bad side effect.
As for this chocking game thing, its been around for many years, i cant see these deaths happening if the topic was touched on a bit more in high school health education/drug education type of things but when the mentality is "drugs are bad, dont do them" then clearly people are going to turn to things like this for a quick high.
Yeah you could be right...I've seen people on bulbs that looked more under the effects of oxygen dep though, after breathing a balloon in and out for ages. This still might not cause brain damage though...I mean, people visiting high altitudes can have pretty low oxygen sats but I'm pretty sure brain damage isn't a concern (unless it's mount everest or something)
This game has definitely been around for a while, I remember kids doing it when I was younger and apparently there's reported cases of deaths going back hundreds of years.

No real clue why I did it but I did countless dumb things for a laugh when I was a kid. This was a prevalent thing at my school when I was in year 8 but peoples fascination with it faded very quickly.
