RIP Mr Nice

Last time I scored decent hash in the UK (not including pollem) was in January of 2000 where I manage to pick up 2 oz of amazing Lebanese red seal for £120!!! The lump was pure drug porn - a perfectly square block with the cellophane completely covering the top. The next time we went back to the same fella who said he could do the same price and weight - it was all gone - nothing but soapbar left. We bought the drugs as we had made the deal, but it was the last time I relied on having a source of quality hash, sticking to sensi / skunk type plant matter after that.

Yes, very.

Who couldn't spell while he was frothing at the mouth typing? No. That's you Owen.

With a junkie life he couldn't kick? No, no, that's you again.

1/3 ain't bad for you though eh Mr Fullofrespect?

Who pissed on your cornflakes? Frothing at the mouth.....nice bit of ironing you're doing there mate.

Well if anyone here knew him personally I sincerely apologise if my question offended you. If you are as I suspect just getting worked up over a dead celebrity who didn't know you from Adam then perhaps you should grow up.

I enjoyed his autobiography, but he did have a reputation for being a chronic bullshitter. Deserved or not I couldn't say.

He wasn't a "celebrity".
Howard Marks was not some famous person.
He was infamous, for moving massive, massive quantities of weed and hash around the world, whilst staying true to certain principles.
To dismiss him as a "celebrity" completely misses the point of his status as a counter-cultural icon, and something of a folk hero.
If you had some respect - or at least some dignity, you'd keep your opinions to yourself, or find a more appropriate audience for your thoughts on the matter.
The man was a hero to many of us who find drug laws unjust - and relatively harmless recreational drugs such as cannabis pleasurable and desirable to have access to.
Slagging the man off in a memorial thread on a drug forum smacks of bitterness or attention-seeking.

Bullshitter? He was a smuggler. If you expect him to tell the truth, the whole truth - and nothing but the truth in his memoirs, i'd suggest that is a tad naive.

Marks was - among many other things - a raconteur. Expecting a performer not to embellish or use artistic license is laughable.
Unless you have better - more accurate - tales of supplying whole continents with tonnes of top quality hashish for years? Sounds fascinating! Care to elaborate?

Very well put space junk.

Used to love the colum he wrote for Loaded back in the late 90s....

The most interesting thing for me about his story is how (relatively) quickly he went from his first ever smoke as a student at Oxford to importing upto 30 tonnes of hash and weed at a time...

It just seemed to snowball so quickly. He certainly made the most of the oportunities presented to him...

Yep he spun a fucking good yarn, and was a hero to many a pot head from them times. Myself included. Loved the man <3

Agreed that's the quickest way to stop him or others from using the same method. If he did that he may as well have tattoood his forehead with "come arrest me now!"

still posting inane crap in threads you know nothing bout, seems as if all the trouble youve had meant nothing at all, some people will never learn

a raconteur
yep - a great word to describe him.

he's not a hero to me but i did read mr. nice and it was a really engaging story to me. when you put what he was doing in the context of the 'war on drugs' and how things are (ever so slowly) changing, it was really interesting.

i feel like most of the comments in the thread are in line with the conventional wisdom of who he was and how he was. i've never really seen another opinion that suggested he was "famously a compete wanker and full of shit" but that doesn't really prove anything. as with all comments - positive and negative - that says more about the subject than it does about the object.

love him or hate him or be ambivalent towards him, he had character.

alasdair

I probably smoked some of his stuff in the 80's %)

He certainly seemed to have character and a certain charisma, not something many drug dealer could warrant. His life and work is a great story, regardless of the details.

If it is true that as was said earlier that He got into the pill buisiness after getting out of jail then it puts a bit of a cloud on his " never deal in Class A's because they are evil and only deal in cannabis because it is a harmless (ney bencicial) herb with no harmfull properties" stance a wee bit.....

On the whole though an amazing guy with a very interesting life who just oozed charm and carisma...

RIP Howard <3
