Howard Marks had died at the age of 70.

We've seen this coming for 12 months but its still heartbreaking. My thoughts go out to his wife and children, who were robbed of their father for years over these ridiculous bullshit laws surrounding cannabis.

"Mr. Nice" and "The Howard Marks Book of Dope Stories" were two of the most entertaining books I've ever read.

He really was Mr. NICE.

Loved the story about when he visited the hash factory in the NWFT in Pakistan/Afghanistan....although I doubt thats a journey many westerners would want to make today.....how times change...

Plus his dealings with "yer man" Jim McCann of IRA infamy...

So many great anecdotes....
 
I've seen his live shows a few times. The most memorable one was at the Ryde Theatre Royal, on the Isle of Wight in 2000 -- a weekend in which The Levellers played two gigs at Planet Ice, and various other smaller related events were held at smaller venues in Ryde. Anyway, you were still allowed to smoke indoors in those days; and if anybody noticed me skinning up a couple of doobies, they didn't say anything. Even though I was using solid, and therefore it was bloody obvious what I was up to .....

Mr Nice -- at least, the bits that don't read like "Memoirs of a Logistics Manager" -- was great, and The Book of Dope Stories was also a rollicking read (especially when I recognised some of the places mentioned in one story). Sympathy for the Devil left me feeling rather as though I had missed something important.

Anyway, Rest in Peace, Howard, as they lay you 'neath the green, green grass of home .....
 
RIP Howard. A true legend, like he said himself , if you was smoking hash in the 80's , you was smoking his gear.

Loved the story when they was waiting on the shipment to Shannon airport and all jim was worried about was his porn.
And the cunt started wacking off in front of everyone. Ha Ha

The movie "Mr Nice" was a bit of an abomination but that was hardly his fault....

Also..

My favourite bit is when he's in the penitentiary with all the gang bangers. And their giving him shit. And the clever cunt flips it on them and becomes there mentor. A fucking tough act to follow. Shows how clever he really was. <3
 
Unbelievably smart man. His collection of PhDs and what not, let alone his savvy smuggling and charm. A true one off.
 
Think it was a master's degree from Oxford he had (in Physics or something) rather than a PhD....clever fella all the same though. .
 
He was a qualified particle physicist. He probably could have built a nuclear bomb, if he'd set his mind to it. That might just have had some influence over The Authorities' opinions of how nicely to treat him .....
 
Did someone mention that he got into the pill game after he got out of the nick?

A lot of people were very suspicious of the fact that he suddenly got such a huge amount of parole when he was initially banged up for 25 years (only served 7 IIRC).....

I suppose we'll never know now.....
