A lot of people know Sudafed (pseudoephedrine) is an especially effective decongestant that can cause jittery nerves even at normal doses. Ephedrine is the mirror image molecule: both naturally occur in ephedra which was widely available as a supplement and Chinese herbal medicine (má huáng) until it was banned in 2004, a ruling upheld in 2006 after being challenged in a case brought by manufacturers mainly of Chinese patent medicines.

Ephedrine also has decongestant properties but its primary pharmacologic effect is as a bronchodilator and as such it is listed as an essential medicine that for sufferers of severe asthma or bronchitis can be life-saving. It is available OTC in combination products with the expectorant guaifenesin. Primatine (the HCl salt) or Bronkaid (ephedrine sulfate) are the two main brands, and although the former has more ephedrine by weight, Bronkaid tablets more than compensate by coming in 25mg

Purchasing it without a prescription requires presenting a valid driver's license, which will be scanned into some sort of data bank, the same as for Sudafed. The amount you can buy at one time or within a certain time frame is limited.

Ephedrine is a stimulant in its own right, and can be abused for that purpose and even produce dependence. However don't imagine it's going to have anything like the reinforcing effects of even plain old amphetamine let alone dextroamphetamine and meth. However it just might be the perfect cushion when you're sick and tired of the tweaker lifestyle whether you're a hedge fund manager earning seven figures or sleeping in an abandoned car behind your buddy's house and sling doves which everyone knows you pinch... everybody sometime or another is ready for a break. It's really quite simple, combined with a cup or 2 of coffee 12.5mg of ephedrine sulfate will cut through the brain fog, entropy and exhaustion. 25mg is sufficient in many cases to get you up, out and about and tending to business, occasionally even smiling or laughing at someone's inane joke despite yourself.

Of course you're not going to feel like your old self that's the point. But at least you won't be faking it. Keep in mind the stimulant effect of ephedrine is almost entirely a body effect, and if you tune into it you'll realize it's actually working quite well. Which is why taking any more than 25mg every 4 hours is on you. People with heart arrhythmias should take note and probably steer clear. But then you wouldn't be messing with stimulants in the first place...

Oh, best taken for about a week, 2 at most, without exceeding the recommended dosage. Then it's Starbucks from here on out!

***all joking aside, quitting meth or any strong stimulant has difficulties and challenges which I don't want to diminish in any way. Here is a follow-up to the original post about strategies that could help, which I'm hoping will be added to by other people's experiences of what worked and what to avoid... Personally for me stimulant addiction hasn't been a major struggle in my life. Although I do have a prescription for adderal, I'm only mildly habituated to it and frequently go several days or even a week or more without taking it at all.

This is missing the tools to help heal and restore natural adrenal function. Since the essence of stimulant addiction is profound desensitization to the effects of adrenaline, which is why stopping is relatively easy but abstaining long enough to allow your body's innate intelligence to return to a state of equilibrium is hard. The second part of recovering from daily meth (or Adderall or Ritalin) use is reversing the self-imposed starvation of bad habits, including poor diet and poor sleep hygiene.

The vital importance of good nutrition (specifically high quality protein and fats which in my opinion are of animal origin: organic eggs, fish, quality meat and so on) can be augmented with herbs that have thousands of years of medicinal use in helping restore normal adrenal response to stimuli, and they should ideally go hand in hand with the period of detox (using ephedrine as one possible example to lessen the blow).

It includes specifically ashwagandha which is a very well-regarded ayurvedic (plant) medicine with almost 10,000 years of safe human use in restoring the autonomous nervous system to it's natural homeostasis. It's a topic I'm researching so I'm going to take it up at a later time...

Also amino acids (tyrosine and tryptophan--the best most usable form of which is 5HTP, which is marketed in many European countries as a safe and effective antidepressant with almost no side effects whatsoever... we have the advantage however of being able to pick it up without a prescription). Also melatonin is helpful for resetting the circadian rhythm and re-establishing normal sleep and waking cycles, and has proven its efficacy against the common problem of jet lag. And a good full spectrum multivitamin and mineral that includes the B-Complex, C, and vit.D3 (cholecalciferol) ... which is increasingly understood to play a critical role in psychological and emotional well-being as well as immunity.

At least this is a little more well-rounded than the OP

When I was a teen ephedrine wasn't banned and was super common in OTC stimulant cocktails with caffeine at gas stations like yellow jackets or black beauties. I really enjoyed ephedrine before I tried adderall. After doing real amphetamine I didn't find ephedrine as interesting anymore leading to many years of abuse of meth and MDMA like drugs which continues to this day more than 20 years later.

After spending the holiday weekend with relatives and not bringing enough adderall, I was surprised at how well half a Bronkaid worked this morning with a big cup of coffee followed by a high protein breakfast.

Yeah when I was in highschool you could buy ephedrine right off the shelf. imo its the worst kind of drug, marginally better than psuedoephedrine but its really all the negative effects of stimulants and none of the positive. Caffeine is a more enjoyable, and also easier to get stimulant. Ephedrine is good only for cooking meth or mcat ( do people still do that?)

since my dr. again stopped my dex-amphetamine, 3rd time. They can stop it but will not prescribe it.

The recent last two troubles where health insurance company's made dextro-Amphetamin unavailable. Or unpayable in form of brandname Amfexa.

An OTC substitute would be great, at least in my situation as I don't truly wake up without a stimulant. But Ephedrine is prescription, and Ephedra flat out illegal.

My advice don't start or rely on stim's, certainly not daily. Or get a RC for the times you are in desperate need; 2-FA or 3-FA.

That¨s a really bad idea but that's just my opinion. If you're quitting euphoric stims (coke, amphetamine, meth, a-pvp etc) ephedrine is not a good substitute. Ephedrine doesn't have the same feel to it as the more dopaminergic stims, which are almost anxiolytic (at least to me) when taken in small/mediocre doses. Ephedrine has almost dysphoric feel to it and is very jittery. To me it feels anxiogenic. Pseudoephedrine is even worse especially in high doses. Personally i felt a lot better being sober after years of amphetamine abuse than when i tried substituting it to ephedrine.

Maybe I should reword the thread title. I completely agree with you @LivingOnValium: in no way am I suggesting somebody become a regular user of ephedrine. I've heard of people getting addicted to ephedrine but I think you'd have to work pretty hard at it. It just ain't that good.

... Last night I added other stuff in the way of follow-through that can be done by somebody who has the desire and the willingness to quit strong stimulants. I'll retitle this thread and hope that other people will offer more suggestions from personal experience.

Thx

I keep a half blister pack of bronkaid in my desk at work and another half in my car in case I need a boost. I only use them once every month or less, any they always give me a nice boost of edgy pep.

Caffeine: please don't talk to me until I've had my cup of coffee.
Ephedrine: I took my Bronkaid 45 minutes ago, I don't know about you but I'm about ready to crack some skulls!

I've been using ephedrine to curb stimulant cravings and to pull me through insane lethargy from all the downers i've been on.

If you have ZERO tolerance to stimulants, ephedrine can provide a really nice mood lift, motivation, creativity, etc.. But you will gain tolerance pretty quickly.

And taking ephedrine daily isn't good for your heart in comparison to traditional stims, correct?

I think that the risk is comparable within normal dose ranges but larger doses of ephedrine carry increased risks

After I quit drinking this and caffeine helped me go from 303 lbs to 195 in 5 months. I barely play with it now but was hooked from 2016 to mid 2020.

Had you ever been addicted to another stimulant before? What were the effects of suddenly reducing or stopping your dose?

I had a stretch of frequent speed & MDA use from like 2010-2014. 2 week coke binges here and there but the coke was garbagio so it never really “stuck”. I always drank during that period as well so when I quit the stims the first time, I just leaned on booze until 2016..

2017-2019 I would play with Adrafinil/modafinil on & off.

Specifically with ephedrine I was up to 80mg+ per day and for a couple months I overslept like crazy.

also got my appetite back, which I was trying to kill. Could not mentally focus on shit during that period. Wasn’t good, reducing my dosage CT but the bounce back wasn’t too bad in the grand scheme.

I blame Sudafed (but mostly myself) for a relapse that happened after 13 years clean from a certain "related" substance.
Anyone that says the active ingredient isn't psychoactive is full of it.

Ephedrine can certainly make you want a real stimulant, thats for sure!

It felt more than real enough to me, at least after that much time away.
Its like it reactivated that area of my brain that had been (rightfully) asleep and the old rusty machine cranked back to life.

Alcohol finished the job that it started, however. Always did.

Yeah that was what I understood from it the first time. Gets you back into that, taking xxxxx makes me feel good kind of mindset... which you work so hard to get yourself out of in recovery.

Aaah ok.

I've been taking about 25-50mg of ephedrine daily for over a month now, since I cannot get on a real stimulant. I was worried that i'm doing even worse damage just because it's ephedrine. Maybe it's all the fear mongering surrounding it that I read online.

I haven't noticed any horrible side effects from it yet, except yesterday when I stood up, I was getting syncope.

I also find ephedrine potentiates buprenorphine for some reason (and other opioids). Even psuedoephedrine does this for me, but I prefer ephedrine. With no tolerance, both ephedrine and psuedo can both give me a very slight mild euphoria, along with very mild body-tingle like rushes. I believe that not only do the two (ephedrine/psuedo & opioids) cause synergy from their own "mood lifts", but that the CNS stimulation can sometimes cause me to go into nod mode, which seems also like potentiation to me.
So not only has ephedrine been a tool for me to try and stay away from street-stimulants, but it's also been some help as far as opioid cravings go while on bupe maintenance.

So I think it's an essential drug, worth having around for certain things. I thought it was just me who used it this way. lol Great post darvocet!
