Television The Wire

DAMN!

I can't wait until I can read this whole thread! I can only go up to post 16 right now....I just have no where else to write this.

So if you are checking this thread out and have not seen past season 3 then....

NSFW:
STRINGER! FUCK! NOOOO! Damn man, damn, damn, damn. I watched that episode three times now. The last conversation Stringer and Avon had was intense. It was the one on the rooftop where they were overlooking the harbor and reminiscing about being young and crazy. One of the last things Avon says to Stringer is "It's just business", and String gets that paranoid/worried look in his face. Avon says it in a sort of sad way too. The same three words Stringer used for snitching on Avon were the same three words that Avon used to justify having to turn over Stringer. Crazy man.

Stringer was one of my favorite characters, so I'm pissed that he's dead. Though, I didn't like how he ordered young Wallace to be killed in Season 1. Even more fucked up was Poot and Bodie were the ones that did him. Also didn't really think it was necessary for D'Angelo to get killed in Season 2.

One last comment...what was McNulty expecting to find in Stringer Bell's place? He picks up the book "Wealth of Nations" and says "what the fuck was I chasing?". What would have been satisfying to him? Was he expecting guns, drugs, and a poster of Scarface? Then what? He'd be satisfied that he got a 'real gangster'?

Oh wait, now last comment. I don't understand the policing side. They knew that Barksdale's crew was blaming Marlo's crew for Stringer's death, but they didn't give a fuck about Marlo, even though his crew was killing people and selling drugs too. It was like, "Hey lets just take on Avon Barksdale so that this new crew could flourish". So the police essentially worked for Marlo without him ever having to bribe them or do anything. They gave him the green light to take on West Baltimore.

And Hamsterdam...interesting concept...fuckin' A this show has a lot to it!

I think I'm gonna re-watch this show sometime soon. I've seen every season 3 or 4 times now, but for some reason that doesn't feel like enough.

I'm only up to Season 4, Episode 3

Season 3 spoilers
NSFW:
Still pissed that Stringer Bell is gone. Marlo is pretty BA so far. Was in Season 3 and the few episdoes I've seen him in during Season 4. His crew is creepy, especially Chris and Snoop

Would you mind revealing the location of Wallace?

The only Wallace I know
NSFW:
was killed by Poot and Bodie in Season 1. Felt sorry for that kid

Damn! I hate this Sunday no mail stuff. I'm not going to get the next few episodes until Tuesday. Last episode ended with that eighth grade girl slicing that other girls face.

Season 4 is amazing, it is my favorite by far. And I felt sorry for wallace the first time I watched the series but this time thru I realized he was snitchin so what was done had to be done. Like Bodie said he should of stayed in the country.

Yeah, agree that for the organization he probably had to die, I mean he did name Stringer and other people. I just thought it sucked since it looked like he was trying to get out, but couldn't do it on his own.

Also, I had liked Poot and Bodie, but then didn't like them as much after they killed him. Though I think Poot was the one that actually shot. Bodie pulled out the gun, but I don't think he pulled the trigger at all.

No dude, WHERE THE FUCK IS WALLACE?

I feel like this is over my head, or you're quoting D'angelo.

Yea hes quoting D'angelo the scene where stringer and the lawyer come visit him and he basically tells them to fuck off. And Bodie and Poot both shot him Bodie first then poot.

D'Angelo quote. One of my favorite scenes in the show. I'm one of the few people for which D was my favorite character throughout the whole series, awesome as Omar and season 3 Stringer were (I hated String until season three, where I ended up liking him very much against my will).

And the thing about the Wallace killing, is that he wasn't killed for snitching. He did snitch, but it isn't pertinent, since String knew nothing of his statement. He was killed because he was a loose end with the potential to snitch. Really fucked up, but the burden isn't all on the drug organization. The police, in their well-meaning endeavors to turn low ranking young-uns into the pieces necessary for their case, make murder a necessity, as killing Wallace and Little Man and the others does count as an act of self-preservation for the high ranking members of the Barksdale crew. The series displays how the system in place makes murder a necessity, allowing monsters like Avon to rule the trade, and how even after you put them away even greater monsters make themselves known, like Marlo. The stakes seem to get higher and higher with each new West-Side drug lord, with small periods of peace. I actually liked Avon a little bit, and rooted for him over the police, but I couldn't stand the evil that was Marlo. The game ain't supposed to be that way.

Just finished season 4

Spoilers up to that point
NSFW:
I am sad that Bodie got killed off like that. Actually the last two episodes were pretty sad. Michael became increasingly violent under the tutelage of Chris and Snoop and I think he may have dropped out of school. He just killed someone. Duquan dropped out of school to work the corner. Randy is in a group home and got beat on there for his minor snitching incident. Bubbles accidentally killed Sherrod with the hot shot and then tried to kill himself. The only mildly not sad parts were Namond going to live with Bunny and his wife because his mom was a super bitch and he wasn't made for the corner. He's no Wee-Bey that's for sure. Also Omar stealing the Co-op's shipment and then selling it back to them was pretty good.

Pretty pumped about Season 5, just hope that it ends on a somewhat positive note, but I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't

I would search for it on Youtube, but I don't want to accidentally see something pop up about the show that spoils it, but the funniest line was in episode 11 of this season. Kenard (the small kid who is like 12 or 13) is working on the corner with Namond, and this older dude comes up to buy from him. After the dude gives him the money Kenard starts walking towards the stash, but the guy is right behind him still. So Kenard turns around and dead serious goes, "Bitch, you better get the fuck across the street and plant yo ass on a stoop." The guy immediately backs down. =D I watched that scene about 10 times and it still cracks me up.

i really need to watch this again. after scoring the corner late last year, and seeing this thread bumped, i really do miss the greatness of this series. i've only seen the whole thing once.

I've thoroughly been enjoying watching it thus far. I've seen a few episodes in season 1 + 2 twice, but I watched all of season 3 and season 4's episodes at least twice so far. It's one series that I'd definitely consider buying. I finished the first three episodes of season 5 and am sad that I only have seven episodes left.

Season 4 spoilers
NSFW:
I doubt they'll continue it in Season 5, but I liked the small side story of the One Ring that went through several episodes of Season 4. I don't think the ring was special, but everyone who wore it had something bad come of them and all who wore it had it stolen from them.

It started with Old Face Andre (had the corner store, but it was kind of a front), he got robbed by Omar then was forced by Marlo to make the fake police report. He ended up being walked into one of the vacants with Chris and Snoop, nuff said. Anyways, Marlo took the ring from him after Andre had been complaining about being robbed by Omar. Then Marlo loses the ring to Omar when he's robbed during the poker game. Then Omar loses the ring to Officer Walker when he's arrested for murder after the false accusation by Andre. He would have been killed in prison if he didn't get help. Finally, Officer Walker loses the ring to Michael when he's held up by Michael and Namond and they throw yellow paint on him. However, Michael never wears the ring. Like Frodo, he puts the ring on a chain and wears it around his neck.

Marlo eventually sees him with the ring and questions him about it, but Michael ends up keeping it. I say the ring is cursed and will be until it's thrown into the ashes of the towers

Yeah Bodie went out like a straight up gang-stah!

Spoilers
NSFW:
One of the only things I thought was a negative about the series is it felt like season 6 was pretty rushed especially with it mostly being Mcnulty creating the homeless serial killer and media subplots

Yeah, but the quick glances at the criminal organizations kept me coming back for more... They managed to tie most everybody's story up in a reasonable way, though. My only issue was the few loose ends that left me wanting a 7th season and knowing it'll never come.

The Wire has some really cool youtube videos and is one of the few shows that I can enjoy a lot through watching clips on. The montage endings for each season are really cool, like the season 4 ending montage. One of the other cool things they have are each season in X amount of mintues seen below.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HVJeEUFlurU
They have that for each season I think. Also FYI, you can use the word "spoiler" in place of "NSFW" for it to appear like that above, and you can use the "=" symbol after it for it to say what the spoiler is for. Here's how I typed it out above for it to appear like it does:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HVJeEUFlurU
[spoil]Or you can use the word "spoil" in place of "NSFW" for it to appear like this.[/spoil]

Cool, didn't know about that, thanks!

I've only got 4 episodes left and that legit makes me sad. I can't believe I put off watching this show for so long. It's been an extremely entertaining ride thus far.

Ever since the first season I been trying to guess whose going to make it through all 5 season alive. So far I am not doing well with my guessing.

Did not see Prop Joe getting done like that. Marlo is just greedy. An episode or two before he does Prop Joe he is coming to Joe asking advice on what to do with his money because he has too much of it. Then he kills Joe, takes the Greek connect, and raises the price per brick on the rest of the co-op.

I guess I just don't understand what his overall goal is. Someone like Stringer Bell made sense to me. He was trying to take his drug money and start turning into legitimate business. He was trying to make a real name for himself. Marlo's name isn't ever going to go beyond the street corners of Baltimore with the way he's going at it. Course I do have a few episodes left.

This a pretty common theme with most tales whether real or fictional where the higher ups of an organization have so much money that they don't know what to do with it. Hard problem to relate to.

Oh, and HOLY SHIT! That shoot-out where Omar was trying to go after Monk, but got setup by Chris, Snoop, Michael, and that other kid (O-Dog?) was crazy. I thought Omar was done at that point. Seems a little unbelievable that he could survive jumping out of a window a few stories up. I thought he was just committing suicide as opposed to letting one of Marlo's crew do him in.
