PC PC Gamers - Whatcha playin?

getting some achievements and stuff... kinda bored w/ games but trying to relax.

Good luck with the achievements. I got sucked into that time sink with my X-Com play through. ;) That's one of the reasons I haven't finished it. I figured I'd grab all the achievable achievements I could on my first play through. Starting to think I should just finish it & not worry about it. Achievements can be fun though. Certain games have a good setup with them where it actually adds to the experience with some fun stuff to do. The implementation can really vary game to game though as to whether or not achievements add anything to the game or in some cases potentially detract. I'm still doing the MTG Arena thing. Waiting for IKO to rotate back to quick draft. I have my 2nd traditional draft going that I'll try to finish later. Apparently I really underestimated the player base for traditional. That or I'm having terrible luck in terms of matches. I rare drafted as usual but only managed to snag 5. :\

I ended up with my first mono colored draft deck! I considered splashing for the Felidar &/or General's Enforcer especially the Enforcer as it'd be synergistic but it didn't seem worth breaking the consistency for a single card after calculating the probability of hitting my curve.
I also considered cutting the Vulpikeet for another Blade Banish. Depending on the opponent I can side them in as needed. I also have the option of siding the Enforcer &/or Felidar in to throw them off. The psych factor was one other reason I considered splashing. Having black &/or green land out can lead my opponent to believe I may have removal, combat tricks or even just permanents of said color & play accordingly when in fact I'm basically mono W. As I'd only be splashing 1 or at most 2 cards of each color (I'd consider throwing in the Survivors Bond if I splashed the Felidar as I've had SB over perform in the past) they'd be worrying about cards I don't have. As I stated I can change up when side boarding if I choose to. I've done so in the past to good effect at least.

I need to win at least 1 more of the 3 matches to get my value out of it. 5 rares isn't enough to make the value line up without winning back some of the invested gems. I'm 1-0 with two matches left to go. I was surprised I pulled off a win TBH. Looking at recent opponents I keep ending up playing against nothing mythic. I switched to traditional to avoid the higher ranks. Again I must just be underestimating myself as I've done well for rare drafting but it'd be nice to not face someone way more experienced for once. 😆 Oh well it is what it is. I've been dicking around with my Mono Red Obosh in standard. I figure I might be able to climb the rest of the way through Platinum before the season ends. Not really concerned with it though. I'll probably give 'The Arena Open' a whirl this weekend though. I highly doubt I'll win anything but it's worth giving it a chance. It's quite strange that day 1 is BO1 as opposed to the usual BO3 that day 2 is but that might actually give me a bit of an advantage day 1. Jeskai Lukka is clearly the deck to beat & I'm sure it'll dominate the meta day 2. Day 1 I'm sure some players will switch to aggro but I'm sure there will still be a large number of Yorion decks. BO1 gives a little bit of a favor to the aggro player in that it avoids the sideboard hosing that often occurs in BO3. I think a decent enough number of people will go the aggro route on day 1 that I can't really change the deck to specifically target the Yorion decks but if I pull to day 2 I might. We'll see. I'm looking forward to giving it a try though. 🙂

Speaking of standard & such I see WOTC just announced they'll be bans / changes to companions incoming June 1st. I'm curious how that'll go. There's definitely a few cards I can think of that could fit the criteria for a ban.

Well Team Fortress 2 made the headlines:
https://www.engadget.com/tf2-racist-bots-valve-problem-interview-steam-194444105.html
“They use aimbot and spam chat with content that's racist, homophobic, inflammatory, pornographic -- including child pornography -- and just generally offensive,” he said. “Some of them are able to copy people's names and even avatars, leading to many innocent players getting kicked from matches. I'm not certain, but I believe some bots can even initiate the kick votes themselves. It's even possible for them to follow you from one match to another.”

It's really sad to see Valve just stand around and not do anything. TF2 is a great game, and the people that play it are pretty dedicated.
Hope they get it worked out :\

I myself have never played the game & am not familiar but regardless of what the game entails I know that bots are problematic. I've played games where there were similar issues to what are being described & it's not pleasant. Sadly enough Valve isn't really known for the way they handle things. At least not in a good way. :\
Hopefully the situation gets resolved for the sake of those that do play said game. I do know enough about it to know that there is a community that enjoys it as you mentioned.

As for myself I'm still doing the MTG Arena thing. Once again I lost my FNM tourney in the final match vs the tourney winner. That's 3 times now I've lost 1-2 in the final round vs the tourney winner. :\ I'm happy with my performance though. Either way I should have some Ikoria Promo Packs coming in the mail. What that contains or entails I do not know. I'm still doing the collecting thing. I'm still trying to figure out the best format for doing so though. I'm starting to think waiting around for quick draft was a bad idea. Since the season reset & quick draft rolled around on the same day due to the rank reset I've actually been playing 'Premier' over quick draft. As I figure the rewards are higher so I might as well go that route while I'm winning my way back up to my actual skill level rank. I'm not sure when / if I should switch off formats. We'll see. 🙂

I miss the days of open mic lobbies in CoD or getting death threats on Xbox Live after a Halo 2 BR match. It was just apart of the game and culture.

Nice. It seems like a good list. Considering the companion changes that list isn't totally hosed by the Lurrus change as some Lurrus based decks were. They hosed the whole companion thing outside of late game plays like Yorion or auto includes such as Kaheera or Jegantha in decks that meet the requirements. If you don't have any creatures in the deck there's basically no reason not to run Kaheera for example. I'm curious how impactful has the change been on that deck? The change definitely effects some decks more than others. Decks needing the companion on curve are done. My Mono Red Obosh list for example became unplayable. I'm back to a Mono Red Cleave deck. I don't really play ranked that much as I'm focused on getting my collection together for standard in the fall but from just dicking around I'm sitting at Platinum. I've really only thrown decks together for FNM in terms of being serious. Once again 3-1 in my store's Friday Night Magic tourney though. At least I'm doing well enough to win prizes but I keep missing that top spot. :\

I won every match I played 2-0 with a 100% win rate until fate decided to flip the script & hand me unplayable hands. Nothing like drawing a 1 land hand that you mulligan into a 6 land & a torban hand. The game didn't go any better it was followed by drawing nothing but land. Same BS game 2. I draw 3 torbans & 2 cleaves in my first hand & mulligan. Second hand throws me 3 embercleaves 2 torbans & land. After having to mull twice it just wasn't possible to make up the card advantage. I might as well have just conceded. :\

Oh well; I enjoyed myself none the less. I just hate to lose matches to bad draws. I don't mind if I make a mistake or learn something from the game but losing to repeated bad draws is annoying. I'm still drafting IKO so close to finally having the set. I've got 99 packs sitting in my inventory. IIRC my spreadsheets correctly I'm four or five drafts away from being able to open packs for completion. Looking forward to it. I been doing well in that regard. I've added two more trophies to my limited collection so I'm happy. Best of luck hitting the ladder or whatever event you've put that deck together for. :)

wow, i regularily get to silver rank and stop rising up then. i mainly do the standard play for quests.

No doubt. It's quite interesting to me to see how widely the ranking system seems to vary. I'm sure if I sat down & grinded I could climb higher. Honestly I find the lower ranks to be more of an issue as there are so many different brews compared to higher ranks. :\

At higher ranks it's mostly meta decks which I'm familiar enough with to know what's coming. At the lower ranks you run into decks that you assume are meta that then pull out unexpected shit. That or you just have no clue what's coming. With the higher ranks as long as you know the meta you have a pretty good idea of what to expect. Having a general idea of what you're up against makes a huge difference; in my case at least. I'm so close to finishing Ikoria. Maybe I'll get a chance to do some drafts this afternoon & finish it. 🤞Once I get that out of the way I might see about grinding ranked. It's best to grind at the beginning of the season considering that even if you hit mythic it resets back to Platinum 4 though. So it'll be a hard call. I might grind it anyway just for the practice. That or I'll switch over to drafting Ixalan. That's a hard call for me though as I don't play historic at all ATM as I have basically no collection for historic since I started after THB. We'll see if I decide it's worth trying to collect older sets as well for historic. For now I've been focused exclusively on drafting / completing all the standard legal sets for fall. Basically everything from ELD onwards. It wasn't until nearly the end of THB before I started drafting properly & getting serious so it's taking me a bit to catch up. I'm sure I'll have full sets of everything standard legal by the fall if I keep it up. 🙂

As for getting through the quests quickly I find that the play queue is a good way to whip through the dailies but the matching is totally random IMHO. It's based off cards in the deck but still seems quite random. I use many trackers & one of them MTGA Assistant lists recent opponents with ranks so you can look back & see what rank the people you are up against in the play queue actually are. It's so random! One match I'm playing against top mythic players the next I'm playing against bronze 4. I'm using a fully decked out Mono Red cleave deck yet I will often run into players in bronze, silver, etc. Most likely they also have good decks & just haven't played ranked but it's still a bit odd to me for some reason. I figure if you're running basically tier 1 you'd run into more tier 1 but not it's not as consistent as I'd expect. As I mentioned ranked even at platinum I run into a surprisingly large variety of decks. There's a much smaller amount of "meta" decks than I would expect. At least tier 1 anyway. At higher ranks my understanding is there is a lot more "meta" decks being played. Though at higher levels it's basically a requirement. :\

The deck you linked was definitely a contender but is it still viable post companion change? I know that some of the Lurrus decks were still quite playable as they used Lurrus late game as opposed to on curve. Seeing as I don't have much experience playing a deck like the one you linked I'm not sure as to it's viability with the companion change. The Lurrus decks I'd messed with aren't viable post change. I had a enchantment based deck Orzhov Lurrus deck with constellation triggers but with it's to much of a hit with the companion change. It was fun for a bit when IKO first dropped. I opened a Lurrus on the first day in sealed & proceeded to make said Orzhov deck. It was a blast the first week or so before people caught on to Lurrus in general. Regardless of what deck you're playing now best of luck to you. May the queues treat you favorably & may the RNG god's bless you with decent opening hands. =D

true. a reason i might not get higher than silver is that im playing mostly a slightly modified mono u azure sky deck which isnt meta at all. but it still performes well and im basically satisfied with making silver ranking.

it is still playable with the changes, surely not as good as before but i take the lurrus as an free 8th card which might come in handy at late game. when i play this deck, lurrus doesnt last that long in play anyways at least when playing against mono red or black decks.

well, thanks and good luck to you too. i still have to learn much about mtg, been starting just in january this year...

That works. It can be a fun archetype. I messed around with a somewhat similar deck at one point. An Azorius flyers brew with Skycat Sovereign for example. I'm guessing you're referring to the preconstructed deck now that I think on it. I can think of a few changes one could make to take it in other directions as well. The closest deck I've run into a few times is probably Azorius flyers with Rally of the Wings. As long as you're having fun that's all that really matters when it comes to gaming. I'm overly competitive myself & it can detract from my enjoyment of things sadly enough. Generally I avoid multiplayer games for that reason but I couldn't pass up MTG due to my nostalgia regarding it. :\

Makes sense. That's kind of what I'd figured regarding that deck but wasn't positive. Now that you've replied you've pretty much echoed my thoughts. From what I can tell the companion changes were made more with a focus on formats not available on Arena. Lurrus is just absurd in the older formats. I don't play them as I only play on Arena but I see information regarding them when reading on certain sites.

well, thanks and good luck to you too. i still have to learn much about mtg, been starting just in january this year...

Thanks. MTG is to the best of my knowledge considered to be one of the most complex strategy games in existence. It's understandable that the learning curve is quite high. I think one of the main reasons I'm able to compete is my familiarity with the game from my youth. I played two decades ago when the game first came out. I didn't realize it still existed until February. It was sometime after THB had come out. I saw an ad for Arena & was like "Holy shit that game I played as a youth is still around? Nostalgia". Checked it out & I've been playing ever since. Though there has obviously been a huge change in the game over the twenty years I missed my skills from back then still seem to apply. I must say the fact that 'mana burn' no longer exists blew my mind! 😆 It took me a bit to realize a few changes like that one that wouldn't necessarily be obvious. Certain mechanics they changed. Interrupts aren't a thing anymore. Plenty of other things have changed as well but all in all I think my previous experience has been more of a positive than negative in the long run.

Quick question before I wrap this up though. Do you ever run into the same player repeatedly in the play queue?

I know I do & I'm curious if anyone else has noticed this as well. For example last night I had an hour to an hour & half to get my daily wins in so I jumped in the play queue for some quick grinding. In the course of that time period I ran into the same player three times! As I mentioned previously the ranks in the logs were all over the place. Everything from bronze 4 - Mythic again. In particular this one mythic player popped up three times. It was a very strange night. Not only did I play that same player three times (3 wins for me ;)) but I ran into Mono B discard decks multiple times as well. It was very strange. I kept getting the same players or decks. It's not like decks playing Burglar Rat & Yarok's Fenlurker are common! Very very odd night. I know in the past I've ran into the same opponent multiple times in the same day but never before had I ran into them multiple times in the same hour.

Anyway I'll stop rambling now. It just popped into my head & I figured seeing as I'm talking about it why not ask? :)
