What do you gauge intelligence by?

Im purposely leaving this short and sweet as im interested to see the responses

Intelligence is relative. My father would observe someone who is very pragmatic and fast with hands on and physical kind of tasks as "smart".

I like the "intellectual" kind of smart.

But I recognise that there are different types of smart, and I wouldn't feel right labeling any one kind as intelligence.

Actually, that's kinda what I think the term intelligence is supposed to refer to. All kinds of intelligence. You can then break it down into sub sections.

Ones ability to impart beneficial and insightful knowledge onto others

^ I agree, well said

I'l make it a bit clearer :) What would make someone appear to be smart or intelligent to you?

(edit) I ask, as someone said this to me the other day.. "She's actually really intelligent, she got 90+ on her VCE enter score"

That statement just sounded wrong to me, does doing well in school and going to university make you more intelligent does it?

Insight (wisdom) and/or intellectual capacity (book smart).

With the people I find the smartest, they tend to compliment each other.

I've found TER scores have little to do with how I perceive someones intelligence - in fact, on many occasions when I've been told, I'm a little shocked that they scored so high.

Specialisation maybe? If someone is smart in a chosen field, or in a particular activity, I will tend to be impressed by that expertise or talent.

I don't tend to think much of it when someone mentions IQ or test scores. I just get suspicious as to why they mentioned their IQ score (unless it was in the course of the conversation).

I know plenty of people who received much better HSC scores than myself, who I have no problems with labeling as less intelligent than myself.

Ill gauge how intelligent someone is within 5 minutes of having a discussion with them. You can just tell, how they structure their sentences, how they respond to questions you're asking them, how literate they are etc.

Thats how i'd gauge it. Although if alcohol is involved when said discussion is taking place, this method of assessing intelligence becomes kind of useless.

Of course it does.

And the only ones who will argue differently are the dumb ones, those little neophytes who need to validate their puny existence in some fashion. They are always the ones who play the "Well, there are different kinds of intelligence" card. Great. So facial recognition is a form of intelligence, but you're not gonna win any awards for remembering faces. Get a life. If you can't keep up with the intellectual titans of the world, like our esteemed colleagues maddog and Immortal Teknique, then you might as well just give up the ghost already and become a hairdresser.

But wait! Surely, haircutting acumen and dexterity with a pair of scissors is a form of intelligence....

^ So are you saying you gauge intelligence by how many awards are won for academic achievement?

^ In fairness to University attendees and graduates, they're rarely unintelligent.

Generally speaking, they're more intelligent than your average unskilled worker. Not always, of course, but definitely more often than not.

I guess the standard things that other people say, how someone speaks through text or verbally which isn't really intelligence but a measure of how articulate someone is. Their capacity for general knowledge, I mean this is trivia quiz stuff but it also shows that someone is educated.

There are heaps of other things too that we use though to make that judgement. What someone is wearing (i.e. fluoro) or someone's accent (think Kath & Kim).

Intelligence is pretty over-rated anyway, it might help you get by in life but less tangible things like wisdom and common sense are the things which, to me, makes a person more successful at life than others. There's no standard test for those qualities unfortunately.

^ So are you saying you gauge intelligence by how many awards are won for academic achievement?

Exactly. I have won 3 academic decathalons by the way.

But back to my brilliant theories: intelligence is a multi layered cake. For instance you have maternal intelligence, or a natural inclination to nurture and breast feed. Take confidence in knowing you will make a much better mother than up all night. But I bet she can do more multiplication problems in her head than you can. Or let's take out friend lostpunk. If we transplanted that guy back into the Neolithic Age, he would no doubt have a fantastic capacity for hunting, gathering and smashing of things whereas my intelligence would be most suited for hiding in caves and licking slime off of rocks. See, genetics is a balancing act, so mysterious, so beautiful.

I don't see why this would be something surprising. I mean, what other group in society do you see as being that of ultimate intelligence?

A university, seems like the kind of place that would attract people who are motivated to learn, whether for money or the act of learning itself.

To be fair sitting alone in front of a computer while a world of excitement rushes past outside doesn't really rank highly on the Smarto-meter

Neither does destroying brain cells with mind altering substances.

This thread is a bit like asking a bunch of fat kids what the best ice cream flavour is...........

And if you must know it's fucking Rocky Road!

There are many types, but for absolute simplicity I tend to observe both emotional, common sense and academic intellect - all of which are entirely culturally and socially based.

I don't know if your question is directed at me, or whether it was just asked generally, but I don't find my statement at all surprising.

I agree with you completely.

I could be outside chasing a ball around. Would that make me smart?

That's not what you were saying, obviously.

It was more of a general statement, yea.
