Philip Seymour Hoffman found dead with needle in arm: cops

Oscar-winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman was found dead of an apparent drug overdose — in the bathroom with a hypodermic needle still in his arm — inside a Greenwich Village home on Sunday morning, cops said.
A personal assistant found Hoffman’s body in an apartment at 35 Bethune St. and called 911 around 11:30 a.m, sources said.
Cops are at the scene and are investigating, sources said.
In 2006, Hoffman publicly admitted that he nearly succumbed to substance abuse graduating from NYU’s drama school, but got sober in rehab.
“It was all that (drugs and alcohol), yeah. It was anything I could get my hands on…I liked it all,” he told “60 Minutes” as the time.
Last year, Hoffman reportedly checked himself into rehab again for ten days after relapsing in 2012.
TMZ said he began using prescription pills, then snorted heroin for about a week before realizing he needed help.

From that short article it sounds like he wasn't a heavy user. I wonder if he had ever IVed before or if he had only done it a few times before? With the drugs the article mentioned is it assumed that this was a heroin overdose?

Other articles have said he used to have an H problem like 20 years ago but got clean until fall 2013.
Another victim of a return to old habits and lowered tolerance.
At least he doesn't have to suffer with his demons anymore. RIP

Any other avoidable deaths from drug overdose that need to occur before society finally accepts people struggling with drug addiction without bias and prejudice?!

A fantastic (and one of my favorite) actors is now dead because he probably knew that society would shun him if he IV'd in public, and of course, there is no InSite in NY.

Fuck!

OSCAR-WINNING actor Philip Seymour Hoffman has been found dead of an apparent drug overdose - in the bathroom with a hypodermic needle still in his arm - inside his Manhattan home.

Bizarrely, the tragedy came just days after rumours of his death swept the internet in a sick celebrity death hoax.

A personal assistant found Hoffman’s body in his apartment in the West Village neighbourhood of New York about 11.30am local time (3.30am AEDT), sources told the New York Post.

Heroin was found in the apartment and the star was fully clothed when found, law-enforcement sources said.

"It’s pretty apparent that it was an overdose," an official told The New York Times. “The syringe was in his arm.”

He had supporting roles in a number of critically-acclaimed movies throughout the 1990s, including Boogie Nights and Magnolia. His growing reputation as a character actor reached its peak with his award-winning 2005 portrayal of the US writer Truman Capote.

He also had a successful stage career, directing and appearing in a multiple Broadway productions, including a turn in 2012 in Death of a Salesman, for which he earned a Tony award nomination.

In 2010 he directed the Sam Shepard play True West for the Sydney Theatre Company, at the invitation of directors Cate Blanchett and Andrew Upton. During his Sydney stay he was a guest of businessman James Packer.

Last month, Hoffman appeared worse for wear at the Sundance Film Festival at a party for his movie God’s Pocket, witnesses told The Post.

He seemed “slightly disheveled and pasty” and initially declined interviews while his co-stars, Christina Hendricks and John Slattery, talked to the media, witnesses said.
