Bupe A problem: cannot enjoy alcohol while on suboxone

Im sure I read about this somewhere on bluelight but I could never find an answer. Out of my 7 years on bupe i realized that it made alcohol almost rendered useless. Why is this? My best guess is that alcohol has action at the mu opiod receptor and the partial agonism of bupe is blocking this ridding of the warm cozy feeling. Now when I drink it just makes my mouth dry and I piss alot and get a headache. I almost want to get off of bupe so I can enjoy beer again.
Anyone have any links on the subject?
Thanks in advance,

I found this to be true as well, and have seen others comment on it too. I'm not sure why, but I do know it holds true for a few other opioid-class drugs, kratom being the first one to pop into mind.

I've had the same problem as well ever since i started taking suboxone. Alcohol just isnt really that enjoyable for me anymore. Every time i drink i get tired, but i can't sleep. I always get a nasty hangover too, even if I don't drink much. I swear 2-3 beers will give me a hangover it sucks. I just don't drink now because of it. I'm sure once you stop taking suboxone you should be able to enjoy alcohol again.

Wow..I never noticed that before but you are right. I have never been a big drinker, just a social drinker. And I started hanging out with an old friend(who doesn't do drugs, just drinks) a couple months before going on suboxone. I drank with him EVERYTIME we hung out, even though alcohol isn't my DOC once I get started I enjoy it...but more and more I just found myself volunteering to be the DD and now I can't remember the last time I drank alcohol...I didn't notice it feeling any different, I just have absolutely no urge to drink even when everyone around me is

I remember becoming very very tired drinking on bupe. It didn't so much enhance the experience, as it did put me to sleep.

All I know is that I could never drink when I was on Suboxone..now 4 months off I still can't drink. Ironic since before I started taking pain pills I would guzzle a jug of Vlad with no problem. Bottom line, I hate the feeling alcohol gives me now so I'm the looser DD when I go out.

William Burroughs describes this same thing somewhere in Junky I'm sure. And I had the same experience - drinking on bupe brought zero reward, and just made me tired and grumpy.

Since getting off bupe about 80 days ago I've been drinking like a fish and it's the FUCKING BEST.

I don't see how this is a problem to be honest? Ethanol isn't that great for you anyways.

agreed, how does it feel for you, arent you at .25 mg? im curious if low dose bupe blocks its good effects or if its just high dose bupe that does it as a suspect.

It's just an altogether bad idea to drink more than 1-2 beers or wine when on any opiate/opiode whether it's full
agonist, partial...I can drink beer w/ benzos, but I dont suggest anyone else doing it. Yeah, having more than one drink
on a small- moderate dose of Bupe' is just gonna make you sleepy/unstable.

Designated drivers are far from losers...

IK your asking him, but I'm on the same dose and alcohol still sucks. I think it sucks on just about any dose. Perhaps it will become enjoyable again once one racks some time completely off the suboxone.

I've never heard of this but this is definitely the opposite for me. If i do some sub from i start drinking the buzz i'll get from the beer and from the sub enhance each other somewhat and I enjoy the beer a lot better as well since suboxone makes me crave sugary things. I'll actually do some sub before I go out on a night of drinking so that I don't start wding when I start drinking.

In the first couple years of taking suboxone, I couldn't drink anymore than a few beers or I would feel sick. Now, I can drink on top of suboxone for some reason. I don't take them everyday though either, just when I can't get my hands on other opiates. I see alot of people on here that hate the feeling alcohol gives them. I have to admit, I'm not one of them.

Bad Idea...Dont take this as advice.

This is just a simple fact of life for some people when they are on Bupe. It's a negative side effect, but if you're trying to get sober then isn't avoiding alcohol the way to go? Maybe it is a blessing in disguise, you never know.
