Heya

I have always had difficulty getting off to sleep. Anyway, my dr no longer trusts me with benzos but I can still get them, but I'm out for a couple of days.

Anyways, he prescribed me mirtazapine for anxiety/depression and he said it would help with my insomnia too, however, I have ran out and won't be getting anymore for a couple of days.

However, I have some zyprexa 9it was my sisters but she doesnt take it anymore, i have checked the date on it and it hasn't expired.

Is it any good as a sleep aid? what would be a good dosage?

thanks :)

weak action at GABA_A
antogonist at H1

that makes for a sedative

I would look for something else before going to an anti-psychotic for sleep aid. there's risk of diabetes and what not but if you just use it for a few nights you should be ok I would think.

start with the lowest dose you can. it comes in 2.5 mg, 5 mg, 7.5 mg, 10 mg, 15 mg and 20 mg.
So if your sister had the 20mg dose then you may be out fo luck. Some pills just aren't meant to be cut or broken where as others are scored specifically for this purpose.

I'd recommend the 2.5mg dose to start. If its like mirtazipine, then you get more sedation in the lower dose threshold than you do as you start to increase the dosage.

thanks for that - its 5mg per pill so I guess I will crack one in half and see how I get on :)

Zyprexa got me totaly wired like an amp. Paradoxical reaction I suppose.

Seconding what K'd-OUT0-in-AZ said, majorly. We were on it for a couple years and gained a ridiculous amount of weight. Doubt that would be an issue taking it sporadically for sleep, but could be something to keep an eye on.

That shit almost gave me diabetes, I was prescribed with it as a sleep aid and ended up gaining tons of weight. Only used it for a few months, but the stretch marks in my belly are with me forever. Do yourself a big favor and DO NOT touch that shit.

anti psychotic meds are very dangerous especially when your not crazy. then again youd have to be crazy to think youre sane enough to take them when not insane.

that being said when i was prescribed them not only did i get the typical weight gain but also tremors and full body spasms that led to me basically fainting for an instant. like another poster said you should be ok taking a small dose or a few small doses but do you really want to risk it? just drink 2 liters of rum.

also even just dosing once dont make plans on doing anything for the next day or so. it can knock you out longer than expected.

I second that! Had exactly the same problem with that shit! Stay away from it for god's sake.

maybe seroquel would be a better antipsychotic for use as a hypnotic for you.

its a very powerful sedative, the stuff knocks me out on meth comedowns

thanks for all the advice - I know anti-psychotics had a lot of bad side effects but I didnt know they could give you diabetes :| yikess!!

anyways, i took like 5mg last night to try help me sleep - it had no effect whatsoever so i guess I won't be touching it again!
