Your say: Colorado begins legal sale of marijuana for recreational use

The sale of marijuana in Colorado has revived the debate about the decriminalisation of cannabis.

Colorado has become the first state in the US to legalise the sale of marijuana for recreational purposes.

Almost 350 stores in the state had been given a licence to sell to 28 grams (1 ounce) of marijuana from January 1.

While consumption in public places remains prohibited, sales are expected to earn more than $US67 million in tax revenue this year.

Washington state voted to legalise marijuana when Colorado did - at a November 2012 election - but stores are not expected to begin selling the drug until later this year.

The sale of the drug has revived debate on the merits of legalising marijuana.

Here is what some ABC readers thought. -

@abcnews #Colorado - this is a good thing. #Marijuana is no worse than alcohol - probably better.

No! But then again it's ok to permit a drug that clearly causes psychosis and resembles schizophrenia. Hope the health care system can afford their duty of care when it comes to hospital admissions!! I work on the field and see it every day, this world has gone mad!"

She certainly isn't working on my grass field.. so she must be talking of working in a field.. I think she works on the local middle school football field.

I sent her a message on fb because i'm bored. I included the above mentioned article from neversick.

oh man, I'm so glad that study has come out, finally people will stop believing the daily mail headlines!

How long do you Aussies think it will be for you guys?

Medical cannabis was denied a couple of months ago, on the grounds that:

"The government does not support the use of unregulated crude cannabis products for medical purposes as the potency and safety of these products cannot be guaranteed,"
"Long-term health impacts are irrelevant to those who have only a few months or years to live."

So I'm going to say we have a better chance of Ayers Rock freezing over.

^ Yep, sadly it's not happening here at all. Not medicinal, not legal. Nothing.

The conservatives think that if pot is legal everyone will turn gay and start molesting animals. Seriously.

But if they regulated it and produced it under licence they could then get the exact thc/cbd levels and people would know what the fuck they are buying. As for safety, besides a few people greening out (back to the unknown potency levels) and some people having mental issues (which may or may not have existed before they used cannabis) how the hell does safety even come into it when the government allows people to buy as much alcohol and tobacco as they wont? As if you give a shit about anyones safety.

lol =D

It's more excuses to keep it demonized and illegal for all the people who get high there's someone somewhere losing money off people legally getting high on weed. Big pharma. Cartels, etc the list goes on. The people with the least power have the most desire for it, so it's a long arduous process. Eventually the goddam plant that grows outside naturally will be allowed. I just wonder how much longer.

"Long-term health impacts are irrelevant to those who have only a few months or years to live."

This has failed to address the point that the quality of life is vastly improved in the short time, as well. Surely if long term health impacts are irrelevant, it's all about making the person feel better with the time they have left? ie. have an apetite, are able to sleep, marijuana will help to improve these aspects and provide a more complete wellness as opposed to prescription drugs which leave you as a pain free zombie.
