Your philosophy on tipping?

I would like to tell you that, in this case that is wrong .. I have seen teenagers in this area that come in to be our best tippers. They actually understand the value of tipping. It is the older generations that are stuck back in the old standard of tipping...

I'm talking about kids WORKING in the industry, not dining. What I was trying to say is that it's all the bad servers out there that ruing it for YOU, by constantly giving poor service and leaving a general "the service here sucks" attitude.

I love ya to death honey.... but this our opinion to. Are we aloud to agrue the point to. And we are making a statement and if we are alittle mad about this situation, we're here to educate on how things work on this side. And when some posted this they should of know that there would be some server out there that was going to have a very strong opinion on this.

An opinion is fine, but there's no need to argue over it, no need to get upset. We are just talking, right? No one is attacking you personally. If I were to be served by you or Mikey I'm sure I'd get excellent service, ergo you would get tipped as generously as I can afford. No one is saying you are bad at your job hun, no one is saying you don't DESERVE to get tipped better.

^^totally agree with that. I don't exspect to be tip well all the time. I was just trying to make a point how alot of people do have the same attitude toward things.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
And yes we do sometimes make more than minium wage. But were also working alot harder than people sit behind a desk..
and I totally miss read the teenager thing.
I get three table sections at my job.. I know that's not alot compared to some places..
i hate how people say if you cant afford to tip, then stay home. fuck that. restaurants are out there for people to eat at. i dont believe it says you have to tip when you enter the door. if you wanna complain so much about how you only get $2.88 or whatever an hour, and people stiff you, then get another fucking job. its not an obligation when you walk into a restaurant you have to tip 20% or more. i usually leave a tip 20% or greater for great service when i can afford it. but im also a college student and wehn my friends wanna go out and eat, im not going to sit home and not go just because i cant afford to tip. some of the times i have even told the waiter/waitress "sorry, but money is running low right now, and i cant leave a tip tonight. the service was very good." i have always gotten positive responses from them. who knows if they are really pissed and just dont wanna say anything. i dont know.
But were also working alot harder than people sit behind a desk..
Everyone thinks their job is the hardest. I believe that your job is very demanding mentally and physically but a lot of people who sit behind a desk have pretty damn demanding jobs themselves. If nothing else, be greatful that you don't have to bring your work home with you, for example.
^^ lol, exactly
i really have a hard time believing that being a waitress is so much more difficult than an office job. at least you dont have to take your work home with you. Just because you run around with trays doesn't mean your job is that rough, sorry.
( i agree with shannabanana, obviously, didn't mean to type the exact same thing)
i tip well only when it's deserved - when i go out to eat it is a treat and not something I can do all the time - just b/c you made a choice to be a waitress and get that hourly wage doesn't mean I should make up for that by tipping half the cost of my drink or my meal. No way. With the money I hear that people get in tips - I'm not too concerned.
^I agree. I work at least as hard as my friends in the service industry, if not harder. And hell, I'm broke too. ;)
I tip 15% at restaurants and bars, unless the service is rude or exceedingly inattentive, in which case they get 10% and they are lucky to get that. On one occasion in which I got the worst, rudest, most condescending service EVER I left the EXACT amount of the bill and promptly got hold of the manager to explain why.
My manicurist, colorist and aesthetician all get 20%- my Brazilian wax or color job are more personal of services than someone taking my order for food.
I do not tip at Starbucks or other coffee shops. They get paid quite well, they get full benefits (whereas I don't) and it's bad enough being raped for a $3 latte.
Sorry if this sounds harsh, but gratuity is just that- GRATUITY.
LMAO - I work at Starbuck's and I still can't believe we get tips.
As far as being a server, I have not been one, but I am sure having several table of people relying on YOU to fill their every need is very demanding. I am usually a generous tipper.
Oh, and I bring my work home - in the sense that a crap day at work my ruin my mood all day long. That goes with any job - however, if you mean DOING work at home, you better be salary ;) I maintain the idea that that practice is abuse of an employee - home is work-free damnit!
Thats just it we really don't get an hourly wage... If you think 2.83 an hour is a good wage and thats BEFORE taxes and tips are not free money we do have to claim these tips...
If you honestly think 2.83 an hour is good enough without recieving a tip then by all means I would like you to work as a server and then tell me how you feel when you get stiffed/or recieved a shitty tip... Tell me if you are able to pay your bills with your wages.....
I am not complaining about my job. I love my job. the people in it. I actually am really good at waiting tables(been a waiter for 9 years now so if I hated it so much I don't think I would still be one for over 9 years now)
What I don't like is ignorant people.. They may not be ignorant by choice they just don't understand about tipping... This is why I get so heated over it... This is a way for me to educate people...
In all honesty I just don't understand why someone wouldnt want to tip thier server 18-20% if they got good service. As stated servers work for tips(our wages pay our taxes) The past two months I have recieved a Voided check working full-time since I claim my tips...
Can anyone honsetly say they would like to wait on a table for an hour take thier time with them and then get stiffed/shitty tip when they could wait on another table and get a good tip????
Just like bartenders who give free drinks when you tip them well I remember all good tippers as well as bad tippers and I am sorry if I got stiffed from you in the past can you honestly say I am going to devote my time to you should you come in again when someone else will tip me????
Think about it that way as well..............................
The way I look at it - and you may not like this - but you are the one who chooses to work for those tips, and some people out there aren't going to agree that everyone should automatically give 20% or more as a tip. If you want more money, get some education, and get a job that's salaried or at least a higher wage.
I tip 15-20% if i get good service, and if I get outstanding service, they get more - but I don't give it JUST to give it.
The thing that amuses me - if I tip badly - it is because I got bad service - but more than likely that server will just think I'm cheap, and won't think about how bad their service to me WAS. I still think you should give service equally - and not give someone bad service because they tipped you 10% instead of 15%.
^^that's why (in theory) you should always tell the manager why didn't tip, to give the server a chance to learn that he can't act like a dickhead or ignore a table and still get money from somebody else's wallet! :D
WTF????? Get an education????? I graduated college buckoo 4 years ago with a degree in Computer Science from Philadelphia University... I choose to wait tables becuase I like to work in the service industry as I stated I am not complaning about MY job just the ignorance of people who do not know how to tip!
Next time you generalize with the education comment you might want to stop and ask people what their qualifications are!
No, that's ok, I won't, as my head is too far stuck up my ass to contemplate why someone would waste 4 years and all that money to be a server.
Buckoo.
BTW - you may think you're educating people - or that they are ignorant - but in reality, it's that they simply don't want to tip. :p
Oh, and, I'm in college so I don't have to be a server. Fuck that. No way will I ever kiss ass for tips!
And you do what? And how do you know I'm not getting an education? I'm going to paying off my law school bills with my tip money Thank You
And I went to school before... and if you read in my last post this best kind of job work around a school schedule...
You are exactly the kind of people that think we all need an education to get some where in life...I forgot we have to have certain job to be somebody in this life...
If you read all of the post I stated that I was here to help educate from this side of the job... THE REASON WE $2.83 and hour is because we are suppose to make it with the money you tip us with..
This is the job. This is the way it works.. I just think people are cheap ass bastard who don't want to give out their money....no matter how much we slave over your asses....
So we can stick education up our asses thank you...
If youre going to law school - I'm sure you can make a hell of a lot more money doing a job related to that. It will also be much more impressive on your resume, not waitressing.
You're welcome
Again, you choose to work in a field where you're getting paid dirt - but please, I know plenty of people who pull easily $200-300 in tips - and in some jobs I worked, that wasn't even my whole PAYCHECK. So, you're getting tipped well, and doing fine with that I'm sure, otherwise you wouldn't be doing it.
You're right - people are cheap bastards, who don't want to give their money out, because its hard earned, and if thats how you feel, why work there? I'm sure if you're going to law school - there are other doors open for you.
If you get shitty tips, I would suggest trying to come off more happy than you really are. Be extra polite. Ask them how the food is now more than 5 minutes after you serve them. Constantly be checking for dishes, etc they do not need anymore.
I'm not sure where you work at, but I kind of have a theory on waiters. Those waiters who work at low-quality establishments typically suck. I don't tip them very well, definately not 20%. 20% for your average waiter is fucking ludicrous. On the other hand, nicer restaurants typically have very good and courteous waiters. They are very likely to get a solid 20% out of me, if not more.
All I'm trying to say is that you are probably getting tipped what you deserve to be tipped. Don't expect no 20% unless you worked your ass off on that table.
That's just me though. Maybe some people are just cheap assholes. That may very well be the case. However, by working in the field that you currently work in, you take that risk, there is no way around it. If you don't like, get a new job. You have a degree after all. So yeah, it might suck that people are cheap, but you really do have to deal with it, you know. You said yourself you choose to be a waiter because you like it. If you really wanted to, you could choose to be something else where your salary is not so dependent on how generous your customers may or may not be.
I agree - and it should be said that I really only go to higher class establishments - very rarely do i slum it :p because like i said before, it's a treat, and going out to Bob Evans or some other place like that is not where i'm going to go.
So, I go to nice places- and the servers there are always awesome - and they ALWAYS get a great tip. They go above and beyond what they're supposed to do - and that's why they're working at those places, because they are so good.
You obviously have no idea about the service industry..... Why I would still be a server and as you like to say "waste" my money on college???
I am sorry some of us don't work at Denny's or Perkins and get shit pay there are many resturuants out there that the tips are great.... At my job my tips equal to be about $40.00 an hour lemme see an entry level computer job paying you $40.00 an hour!
Plus I get 401k, health/dental insurance, stock options you name it we prolly have that option......
When I lived in Philly I made ten times more than that at a very upscale fresh Seafood Resturaunt.... Many BL'ers who have known me can vouch for this....
My problem is with like I said getting a shitty tip for good service... I just cant see anywhere someone working for you whether it be the food service industry or retail or medical services.. for free. You don't see doctors giving away free surgeries to the less fortunate do you? Hell people without insurance cant even get in the door...... This should be the same way as food service as far as I am concerned!
Yes I understand there are problems in ever aspect of labor but many of these problems in the food service industry wouldnt be problems if people were educated enough......
It shouldnt matter if you are a college student or not as regards to tipping.... you get good service you tip good you give shitty service you get a shitty tip..............
So, please explain why you are even in this thread complaining about bad tippers? Jesus fucking christ - you have no reason to complain if you are making that much. Obviously bad tippers are the minority, and not the majority, so, give me a break! Also, all of your benefits? Yes, you really have no place in this thread if you are so blessed in your position.
This makes me want to rethink how much I tip now.. I think I should tip less - especially if you're making TRIPLE what I make! LOL!
But actually yes, surgery and care does to go the less fortunate, in state hospitals. The care isn't as superior, but that DOES happen.
Did I say that? No, I didn't, but if you think that you're so worthy of their dime, remember, they're wondering the same thing about you.
