Your Opinions on kava kava

I downed 60 capsules and only felt a mild feeling of pleasantness, plus I was high at the time, so it could've been placebo.

60 capsules?? That's a lot; were they standardized for Kavalactones? How many %?

I just got my SAMOAN kava in the mail, and am very pleased with it. on my second cup of tea currently, and I feel mellow, smiley, and slightly buzzed. te he.

Its all root and organic too, yum yum

Kava is a very potent herb normally, however the kavalactones do break down over time. Also, the normal dose is usually between 5-15 grams or more. The kava supplements in gelcaps are usually worthless. Your best bet is to get whole kava root, the fresher the better. Several online vendors sell good dried kava as well. Kava works as GABA receptor agonist much like benzos. St Johns wort can be used to enhance its effects. Many in the S.Pacific also extract it into alcohol, which also combines its effects. The root of the kava plant are not normally very toxic to the liver, however the arial parts such as the leaves, stems, etc contain pipermethystine which has been shown to cause liver damage. These parts of the plant are not traditionally used, but may be present in supplements. Kava is personally one of my favorite herbs, but I would never buy it in a tablet or gelcap form.

My opinion of kava kava: drink it when your on a polynesian island and it is prepared the traditional way.

I have wasted at least $100 on differnt varieties and the effects are inconsistent and overhyped.

I got some 83% paste today. Recommended dosage was two pea-sized blobs (it's a slightly oily solid). I tried about twice that because I'm 6'4" and 180 lbs, and felt almost nothing -- maybe a slight relaxation/sleepiness, maybe nothing (I also ate lunch about 30 minutes after eating the kava so that could have been responsible).

I'll keep trying. I hear reverse tolerance can kick in with this stuff. Heck, the first couple of times I smoked MJ I felt nothing either, then the third time... wow.

you have to get pure (fresh if can) ground kava from fiji. i know for a fact it is the best u can get as i lived in hawaii up until this year. it is used by native hawaiians even though theyre practically sitting around with hawaiian kava in their gardens they still go for fiji stuff. You have to do the whole stain through a stocking process but its truely worth it. (tahiti stuff my be good too but im definetly sure about fiji'an)
also dont use extract, its good as it numbs your mouth and give a very subtle high but u keep dosing thinking ur gonna get betterstronger effects which u never do and end up damaging ur liver.

Well, this stuff was specifically advertised as being free of liver toxins, and it's from a very reputable supplier. I will definitely look into the ground kava though (when I have a little money, heh).

I bought a bottle (of the freeze-dried capsules) once. Don't remember the brand or mgs. Used it with varying success. Never really got good an f'd up but when combined with a small amount of hydrocodone, it really helped with SWIM's OC w/ds. When I say really helped I mean 2-3 pts on a scale of 1 to 10.

Now that I am reading about the liver effects, maybe that isn't the best idea.

As long as you use only the root, it should be ok. It is the arial parts of the plant, the stems, leaves and such that are toxic to the liver.

I might try messing with kava again to see how it works for benzo withdrawal or maintenance. Does anyone have experience mixing kava kava with benzos? I might try to potentiate benzos by taking them with some Hawaiin kona kava root. It's pretty strong stuff. I don't have much to compare it to other than the kava kava capsules you can buy at the drug store, which hardly do much to me even when I take half a bottle at once.

Ah, kava....so many fond memories of evenings spent in a kava fog....I used to get the root (Waka grade, the most potent grade available), grind it up in the coffee grinder, and then blend it with water, olive oil and lecithen....

...it was so potent my mouth and extremities would go completely numb and I would feel a nice, abstract buzz for 2-3 hours....great way to end an evening..

....of course, this was before I became a hopeless morphine addict...

to me, it taste like crack cocaine, makes your mouth oddly numb and hurts your stomach (unless you have a full stomach). the effects are EXTREMELY subtle and if you are using it to replace pot you will be disappointed IMO/IME.
