Your favourite obscure film (that nobody else has even seen)

American Beer - 4 twenty somethings take a roadtrip to the states from Canada, their car breaks down and each one try's to find an alternator. Interesting script and good plot even if the acting isn't top notch.

california split

Altman at the absolute top of his form--which is to say among the freest, loosest and sensorily densest great movies ever made in America. Visually and sonically thick as a brick, it also represents some of the highest-flying improvisatory acting you've ever seen. Put the Godard of the early sixties in a polyester shirt, lay him down among the rummies and compulsive cases of the American gambling subculture, and fill him with equal parts beer and caffeine, and you have some idea of this thoroughly amazing, free-and-easy comedy, which has a scary undertow: the scene where George Segal tries to persuade co-addict Elliott Gould of the hollowness of the big win might be the most scarily desolate in any Altman picture.

perfect review for possibly the best movie of the 70's

"California Split is a movie for those people who enjoy an afternoon of drinking. You know the kind of day, where you say to yourself, "Ah, I'll have a couple and then go to dinner." You have a beer at 2:00pm and before you know it, the clock says 4:00am. But that's okay because you've made eight new friends and you're the life of the bar."

Watching Elliot Gould in this movie is a an absolute pleasure and a MASTERCLASS in acting, he is even better than in " The Long Goodbye" and thats REALLY saying something.

used to be a $200 bootleg tape on ebay, and only available at certain video shops in LA ,but finally has a dvd release !!!! although the dvd has 3 mins cut out for royalty reasons, and they dont play the movie on tv anymore for the same copyright reasons, (so im holding on to my precious precious original vhs copy ) :D

Amores Perros .....wow I'm speechless. This film can mean so many different things to so many different people, but Latino films (particularly Mexican cinema) hits so close to him, we (Filipinos) have so many similarities with them its astounding . Not for everyone tho....I'm sure a lot of Americans :p;) would find the dogfights et al hard to take here.

"Perro" in México means a lot of things, for example : hard , difficult, arduous, and amores means love in plural. Watching this felt like I was watching a super long Spanish telenovela of the highest caliber. Thumbs up.

Vampyros Lesbos... Arty, psychedelic German soft-vampire-porn with the wickedest soundtrack ever put to a movie! :D

OK... So someone has seen Vampyros Lesbos (i did a search of the thread)... What about... Dogs in Space. An underground australian movie about a punk band starring Michael Hutchence before he joined INXS.

My favourite scene is when they shoot adrenaline in the toilet...

never seen the movie, actually i believe there are 3 of them made around the same time, one of which was called "Vampyros Lesbos". i can't recall the names of the other two.

i have the "soundtrack", which is called "Vampyros Lesbos: shagadelic dance party" although it's actually songs taken from the 3 movies not just Vampyros Lesbos (the movie).

awesome music.

edit: actually i believe it's called "sexadelic dance party".

Latcho Drom. An exploration of the joys and tribulations of Roma (gypsies) around the world, through song and dance. Almost no dialogue.

The Omega Diary, and The Game Room. Two fairly dark films about human nature. The first is incredibly low budget, basically filmed on a hand held in some dude`s basement (there`s an IMDB page on it). The latter is an old Australian film with pretty bad acting, but there is a kind of romantic coldness to the main character to which any ostracised genius megalomaniac could relate.;)

Funnily enough, I was originally attracted to both these movies as they are marketed as "Cube 3" in Japan. I don`t know how it works, some company must have bought the rights and re-packaged them. The DVD covers had no mention of the actual titles, i actually though there was a Cube part 3, but inside it was (both times) a completely unrelated movie.

I can see the similarities in story though, so if you liked the Cube movies then the two I mentioned are somewhat in the same vein.

The three above movies, are my fav. lesser known movies I've seen ;)

Not really obscure, but nobody has seemed to seen it... Quiz Show rocked!

Jesus' Son, that movie seriously blew me away. Such a well played out narrative done in a way that is humble and honest.

Any of the Dolemite movies, I know they're somewhat well known, but, these are so bad they're classics. "Now who's bad enough to do that?" "Me *****, me, I'm so bad I kick my own ass twice a day".

Ha! Coming soon to theatres! Great film, one that I would like to see on the big screen some day.

i just saw orson welles' the trial last week, and i was pretty damn impressed by it. its very abstract, and thus a little confusing, but at the same time very humourous and clever and fantastically shot. there's this one shot in particular that i'd like to be able to pause, and frame on a wall. :)

Is that by any chance based on the book by Franz Kafka?? If so, I defiinitely intend to check it out- book was very abstract and funny but terrifying at the same time. It must be the same thing.

..going to google it now.
;)

swing kids was good, lets see
high art, around the fire, bongwater. le punk. dunno, many others i just cant think names right now.
oh, lagaan- once upon a time in india

The most recent obscure film I like:
Sans Soleil.
Actually it's famous, but I saw it for the first time recently.

Andrei Rublev--Or almost any of Tarkovsky's movies for that matter
Pickpocket or L'Argent -- Good introductions to Bresson
Death In Venice or The Leopard -- Visconti's best work

Violent Fire - another Miike classic. Stylized and action packed. The opening scene will BLOW YOU AWAY.
