A young man has died after attending dance music festival Defqon. 1 in Sydney’s west last night.

Believed to be aged in his 20s, the man was found unconscious around 11.30pm at the festival in Penrith.

He was taken to Nepean Hospital for treatment, however later died.

Police are investigating if the man had taken illegal drugs.

Partygoers were warned of the fatal consequences of illicit substances prior to the festival, which kicked off yesterday and will run until tomorrow.

Dr Karen Fisher, Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District Clinical Director for Drug and Alcohol services, told The Hawkesbury Gazette there were “huge” risks involved.

“These psychoactive drugs are being made in clandestine operations by small producers,” Dr Fisher said.

“They are substances that are produced to mimic, or claim to mimic, the effect of drugs such as cannabis, ecstasy, cocaine or amphetamines.”

A man died at the festival in 2013 after taking three pills.

The annual festival is held in the Netherlands and Australia and is expected to be held in Chile.

Experts say we are failing in fight against drugs, as details emerge of moments before Nigel Pauljevic’s death

HARROWING details have emerged of the final moments of a NSW man’s life who died at western Sydney’s Defqon.1 music festival on Saturday.
Festival-goers took to social media to share their sadness at the death of Nigel Pauljevic, 26, of Albury, NSW. A coronial investigation will now examine whether drugs played a role in his death.
“Watched them perform CPR for a good half-hour, using a [defibrillator] as well,” witness Tim Dean said on Facebook.
“He went from sick to dead in 30 mins.”

It should have been a weekend of enjoying big name bands at a world-famous music festival.
Instead, Mr Pauljevic’s friends found themselves fighting desperately — and ultimately fruitlessly — to save the life of their mate.
With 46 people arrested for drug offences at the festival, and nine people taken to hospital, this weekend’s tragic events have reiterated concerns from health professionals that Australia is failing in its approach to reducing recreational drug deaths.

They are even calls to introduce areas at festivals and clubs where people can test the quality of their drugs.

Police confirmed the man’s friends rendered first aid until the paramedics arrived at the festival in Penrith about 11pm, but he died later that night in Nepean Hospital. An investigation is under way to determine the cause of death.

NOT THE FIRST FESTIVAL FATALITY

It’s not the first death at a Defqon event with 23-year-old James Munro dying after consuming three pills at the 2013 festival. Earlier this year, 19-year-old Georgina Bartter died at Sydney’s Harbourlife festival after taking one and a half pills, which she thought were ecstasy.

The vid should also mention how large amounts of alcohol are used there by many people too.
