Not even sure if i can post this on bluelight or not but here goes.

I get nasty persistent colds a lot, pretty much every winter but they are usually cope-able until this. Ive been foul for months now, on and off feeling pretty ill. A few days before new year it started again, but i had things to do and people to meet so i soldiered on. Was feeling a little ill on new years day but i ignored it. My classic symptoms are really achy limbs every time i get this annual cold and sometimes a sore throat and always feeling hot + cold simultaneously. At new year I drunk... lots (I only drink spirits)and had countless bong hits and joints. Next few days i felt fine ill wise, until this morning. when i woke up i had an agonising throat, swallowing almost made me cry in pain and my entire body felt weak and feeble, i popped two ibuprofens, and after some time i felt completely normal. When the symptoms started coming back i took 2 more, and to a considerably less extent i felt better for about an hour or two. Then it started to get worse into my current state...

I literally cannot stop salivating, its taking me barely half an hour to fill a 330ml can with spit... My whole body is painful as hell typing is uncomfortable i cant tell if i am hot or cold, but the main problem is my throat. Any movement hurts, swallowing isn't really an option, and when i have to i get a disgusting taste in the back of my throat. I just tried to drink a glass of concentrated orange juice and water which failed, hurt so much with it passing over my throat.

Im not asking for any sort of medical anwser, just someone with a bit of life experience to tell me if i should bother going to the doctors about this or ride it out. Did excessive drinking and smoking just lower my immune system more? Im in agony...

It does sound like your messing with your immune system with the alcohol. If you can't shake this cold you should see a Dr. With the body aches and weakness you could be entertaining the flu, And with the virulent types nowadays you are risking your life. Don't take it lightly, remember the Spanish flu took the lives of 100 million by some estimates. Take some tea with honey and lemon for the throat. My own personal remedy for colds is a lot of Korean Kim Chi, that I eat straight until I'm sweating like a pig. Works for me or it could just be in my head because I go whole winters without a cold and never had the flu. Of course I live in So. Florida where it rarely gets cold, it was in the eighties all last week but we had a low of 69 today. Take care bro.

You wrecked your immune system for sure, but it's hard to know exactly what kind of infection you have. The fever is your body fighting it, and the chills are the infection fighting back against your body. The more severe the symptoms, the deeper the infection has gone. If your fever gets even higher yet your chills disappear, I would get to the hospital asap. As long as the fever/chill cycle keeps happening, and you're able to maintain nourishment and fluids, then you're not in danger. Your inability to tell how hot/cold you are is a sign that your fever is already quite high so be careful.

I would normally associate that sour taste and excessive salivation with a gallbladder infection, but you recently did a lot of drugs and drinking so your liver and gallbladder are probably just hurting on top of everything else.

A good remedy to ease the throat is vinegar tea. Apple cider vinegar is best. Put one tablespoon into a cup of the hot water, with honey. Sip on it. It will astringe your throat and refesh it. Keep drinking plenty of clear fluids, and broths. I would not take ibuprofen unless you are in some sheer agonizing pain.... IME anti-inflammatories tend to reduce the effectiveness of the immune system and prolong the illness.

Given how raw your throat is, you can't really rule out bacterial infection... which means a trip to the doctor is needed. If your immune system is really in the gutter, then strep throat could cause some really harsh complications like rheumatic fever.

Yes, you should see a doctor--the common cold does not typically last that long, particularly presenting with a fever. I frankly don't see the downside to making a visit.

The fever is your body fighting it, and the chills are the infection fighting back against your body.

I don't think that this is right. The chills are merely one's subjective experience of a fever. And with viral infections other than HIV, the pathogen doesn't really 'fight back' against the body...rather, the virus invades host cells to replicate wherever suitable tissue is present until overwhelmed by an immune response. Being little more than protein coatings over nucleic acids, viruses don't really 'react' per se. In fact, most of the unpleasant symptoms we endure are actually correlate of the body clearing out damaged tissue and replacing it.

When you say you frequently get persistent colds, maybe that's sinus infections because I suffered for years with them. But what you're describing sounds different and I would get it checked if your symptoms don't improve soon. Hope you feel better!

See a Doc and get some antibiotics.

Failing that a decent multi vitamin or seperate Vit C, D, B6,B12 and iron..some Milk thistle to flush toxins out wouldn't hurt either.

Salt gargle for your throat. Eat well (if you can manage to swallow), rest/sleep. Impossible to say if you have a virus or you just partied too hard and fucked your immune system (weed always totally messed mine up).

Get well soon.

Hey bluelight... Just woke up from a pretty agonising night. Swear i was getting OEV's in the darkness... Was kind of in and out of sleep but i did get some. Woke up this morning dizzy from de-hydration but once i had some water it went away. My throat is driving me nuts, i also have a really loose cough that hurts like hell and fills my air way preventing me from breathing for a second.

Trying your throat remedies now, they sound like they will help. Getting a lift to my pharmacy which is about an hours drive from here unfortunately.

This may sound like a really dumb question but is this infectious? I stayed at a friends last night so i want to warn him if it is.

Big thanks to all.

Have wifi now, its just getting worse, a plus is i've been sleeping around 16 hours a day but not very consistently so ive completely mucked up my sleeping pattern. Just a general flu now, thanks all for the help.

Unless you are over 70, the flu shouldn't last for four months. Even in the elderly longest Ive seen is 2 months.

I would see a doctor if I were you.

I went to see a doctor, he said it should clear up over the next few weeks, I was offered antibiotics but didn't feel like I really needed them, I'm feeling a million times better now, still a lil under the weather though...

That's great news ganj its good that you are feeling better. Imo you should have given the antibiotics a chance since you have been sick for quite some time but if you recover within the said period of time then it was a good choice.
