A 24-year-old man has appeared in court today charged with a drugs offence linked to the death of a 16-year-old York College student.

Poppy Rodgers collapsed and was taken to York Hospital on April 19 after taking a yellow-white paste with friends at a house in Tang Hall Lane. She died shortly after midnight.

Luke Carey, of Waterings, Wigginton, is alleged to have supplied her with 4-methylamphetamine, a Class A drug.

He is also alleged to have supplied a young man with the same drug and attempted to supply Poppy, two other women and a second man with the same drug.

All the supplies are alleged to have taken place on April 19 in a house in Tang Hall Lane.

Carey, 24, is also charged with possessing 72.8g of 4-methylamphetamine with intent to supply it to others on April 20.

He spoke only to confirm his name, age and address during the brief hearing at York Magistrates Court.

Magistrates decided the case was too serious for them to deal with and ordered the CPS to prepare committal papers. They adjourned the case until January 3 and released Carey on bail on condition he does not contact the people he is alleged to have supplied and other witnesses by any means including through in the internet or by mobile phone.

Members of both his family and Poppy’s family were present in court.

4-methylamphetamine is an illegal “designer drug” which acts as a stimulant and can suppress appetite. Anyone convicted of an offence of possessing or supplying it faces the same maximum penalty as those convicted of offences involving cocaine or heroin.

A few weeks after Poppy’s death, North Yorkshire Police warned the public not to use 4-methylamphetamine, saying that it had been linked to deaths elsewhere in the UK and in Europe.

when this first happened i was sure it was pma pmma not this one

its a neurotoxin comparable to 4-chloroamphetamine at worst (horrendous long-lasting cripplingly dark comedown) and something like 4-methoxyamphetamine at best (shitty stimulant w/toxic side effects).

It's to be avoided at all cost, but it's unlikely she knew what she was really buying. I bet it was sold as "meph".

i feel sorry for the other guys who were supplied this. apparently this is the true stuff of ecstacy legends, holes in the brain, suicide tuesdays etc.

iv had it before guessed i had been ripped of with crap phet cut with caffeine but this sounds more like it now , as for the bit about the coppers warning people it was not in the evening press that i can remember or on the local news

I Like how the police give warnings about how dangerous this particular drug is, and expect people to believe them after decades of spouting "OMG YOU GUYS CHEMICAL X IS GONNA TOTES KILL U AS SOON AS U TAKE IT!" without any evidence to back them up...

The boy who cried wolf comes to mind. ¬_¬

york 4-methylamphetamine death man faces jail

A young man admitted supplying a class A drug which killed a teenage poppy Rodgers last year .

Luke Cary 24 was aware the 4mma he supplied to poppy had been involved in with the death of a 22 year-old man a year earlier , but was not concerned , a prosecution witness told police .

Carey's defence team have yet o say whether or not he accepts their evidence .
He will be sentenced on August 7.

The recorder of york , judge Stephan Ashurst warned him the courts starting point would be a custodial sentence .

He said "where the supply of a drug has lead to the death of another person, there are important consequence which the court must take in to account "

York college student poppy collapsed at a house in tang hall lane last April 19 ,after taking the drug , she died shortly after midnight .

A 21 year-old man also collapsed at the house but survived.

From the press news paper

So its another drug that would not exist if good drugs were legal. Prohibition sure is killing a lot of people. If you could just walk into a smart shop and buy any chemical these deaths would not happen. Instead you have to buy drugs from a guy on the corner who doesn't even know what he is selling. It's a recipe for disaster.
I agree with newbierock no one listens to the police after decades of disinformation from them. When something really is dangerous its now much harder to get the message out.

i'd hope it'd be a hell of a lot better than 4-mec

why bother going around a selling a toxic amphetamine tho? is it really that hard to get methamp? you can fucking synth your own methcathinone incredibly easily if you wanted to, so what the hell is the point in going around poisoning your customers and risking death on your hands? From the article it sounds like the dealer (whoever gave them the drugs) knew what he had, so in knowing that, why the fuck would you let anyone touch it? Now you're in a world of shit buddy, all for probably $40 at most?? And where did he get this shit anyway? couldn't whoever made it refine it to something recreational and that doesn't typically kill people or poison them?

same thing for pmma and such, why bother, it's bad for business all around, probably LE putting out bad batches just to reinforce that they need to be fighting the war on drugs.

I really don't know what it is with the culture in york we have some seriously sick people running things one of the main family's is headed by a group of know sex offenders two of the top dogs are paedophiles been in jail for it but people are to scared to act against them often get junkies hot shoting each other and shit like that .

The drug is normally common place in Clifton area of the city tang halls smack and snakehead grow houses

Was a time that to get into any position with say you had to of killed some one no shit the would grab rivals and snuff them .

It looks like a nice quite city but it's got a very dark under belly to it

A man has been jailed for more than six years for supplying a class A drug to a teenage girl who died after taking the substance.

Poppy Rodgers, 16, from York, died in April 2012 after collapsing at a house in Tang Hall Lane. An inquest heard she took a "yellow-white" paste.

Luke Carey, 25, of Waterings, Wigginton, York, previously admitted giving her methylamphetamine.

He was sentenced to six years and five months in prison at York Crown Court.

Carey had earlier admitted seven counts in total, which included another count of supplying the drug, four of offering to supply the drug and one of possession with an intent to supply.

Miss Rodgers had taken the drug on the evening of 19 April last year and shortly afterwards became unwell.

She died the following day in hospital.

'Totally trusting'
The court heard Carey had told Miss Rodgers' friends the batch of the drug was so strong it had led to the death of a man a year earlier.

It also emerged her friends in the house had told him not to give the drug to the teenager.

After Carey was sentenced, Miss Rodgers' father, Mark, thanked everyone who had offered the family support over the past 15 months.

Friends of Miss Rodgers had told Luke Carey not to give her the drug
He described his daughter as "naturally beautiful, full of fun and totally trusting".

Mr Rodgers added: "Carey eventually pleaded guilty to supplying the drug that killed Poppy. He acted illegally that night and in some small way is being punished for that.

"The sentence will never be enough as we had our daughter taken from us. I understand in law this might not be murder but given the circumstances it certainly feels like that to us."

Det Ch Insp Nigel Costello, of North Yorkshire Police, said: "Poppy's life was just starting, she was an impressionable teenager and it was the moral obligation of Luke Carey as an adult in her presence that tragic day to ensure that she was kept from harm.

"Instead he exploited her vulnerability by providing and encouraging her to take drugs. A drug he knew had potentially been linked to the death of someone a year earlier."

I have to agree with the above poster. If users of recreational drugs could use good old fashioned cocaine, heroin, amphetamine etc. that was regulated and nearly pure there wouldn't be nearly as many deaths and far less "criminals".
