Xanax vs Oxy - Addiction Potential

Yea xanax does taste like death, I'm used to it now though and I routinely take them sublingually. I have been on xanax for almost 3 years now, currently prescribed 1mg twice a day but I rarely take that much. I have more of a social or situational anxiety so I'll take a half whenever I get in that situation otherwise usually a quarter or half when I can't sleep (work shift work). I don't ever feel the NEED to take any and I often go a few days without taking any at all. Again that's just my personal experience.

There are a lot of opinions on this thread, which I am not sure I necessarily agree with. Opiates and benzos are addictive in different ways. I don't think we should underestimate the addictive nature of either. The effects of both types of drugs, however, are very different. Personally, I feel opiates are the most addictive substances, but this is not true for everyone. Some people do not even care for opiates, which I don't get, but whatever. The point of the matter that the OP wants addressed is whether or not Xanax carries more risk than other drugs he has been rx'd. I would say that it carries about the same risks as any benzodiazepine, although as I stated in my first post, alprazolam does hit very quickly and packs a punch. The very short duration of action can lead to quicker dependence and inter-dose wd's, but a benzo is a benzo, when it comes down to it.

You can take the alprazolam sublingually, and as you will find out there is a very interesting taste, to say the least. I hated it at first, but grew to like it. Odd, but that is what addiction/dependence will do. To the OP, you are well versed in opiates and benzos, this is just another benzo. Use carefully, but don't buy into your doctor's crazy fears.

Your xanax will take longer to gain a dependence to, however, the withdrawal effects can be fatal (seizures, nervous system trouble, ect.). Maybe this is why your doc is hesitant to prescribe. And I have absolutely no doubt in the fact that you were getting 500mgs, I knew several people prescribed to well over that amount. The fact of the matter is you do not want to become dependent on either opiates or benzos.... it's a lifetime of heartache for you and those around you.

I'm kind of lucky in that way. I would be happy to never have another oxy. It's the chronic wrist pain I have trouble dealing with. :(
