Xanax vs Oxy - Addiction Potential

I just got through convincing my doc to scrip me some xanax. He was very reluctant due to addiction potential. In the past he has scripted me up to 500mg oxy per day, demerol, and hundreds of pills of diazepam, temazepam, lorazepam and clonazepam. This is the first time I have seen him so worried about addiction. Lately I have been getting 60 0.5 k-pins every 30 days with 5 refills. I could only get 30 0.25mg Xanax.

Anyhow, my doctors trepidation has me worried. Is xanax really that addictive?
 
Your doctor's worries about alprazolam (Xanax) are a bit odd. Alprazolam is very addictive, but so are all benzos, and so are opiates. Alprazolam is potentially more addictive than other benzos in that you might get drawn into to taking them more frequently, because of the fast onset and short duration of action. It is a benzo that hits "hard". Alprazolam is getting kind of a bad rap, even though it is still wildly popular in psychiatry. Other benzos, especially clonazepam, are becoming relatively more popular. Really, though, if your doctor has no trouble rx'ing tons of opioids (CII, no less), and has rx'd you various benzos including temazepam (one of the more "recreational" benzos), he is likely a little too afraid of alprazolam in particular. It is the benzo of choice to be rx'd in many pill mills, and is often seen taken along side illicit opioids. I can understand why he might be hesitant to script you alprazolam, but don't worry because he is. Docs have to save their own ass.
 
Thanks for the reply. I just took 8 of them (2mg) to test drive these things. I honestly do intend to take them for their intended purpose, but I can't resist testing the recreational potential whenever I get a new drug.
 
No offense to the OP, but is this some sort of a joke? I don't believe your "500 mg a day" story, sorry. That's just BS.

The addiction potential of oxycodone is far, far greater than that of alprazolam (Xanax). Xanax is not even considered to be the most addictive benzo, how can anyone even ask this question. Temazepam, triazolam, flunitrazepam and most other hypnotic BZD's are considered to be more addictive than Xanax. Opioids are some of the most addictive drugs on earth, especially morphine/heroin (and related morphine salts such as desomorphine, nicomorphine, etc) and the semi-synthetics like hydromorphone, oxymorphone, hydrocodone, oxycodone, and the others.

Codeine is more addictive than Xanax.

It's why opioids are classed as Schedule II and benzos Schedule IV. This pattern is seen throughout the world.
 
Yeah, short term, post op for a chronic wrist pain. My problem is that I don't like pain. I told my doc straight up that when I hurt I would use what meds I had to stop the pain. I was working in manual labor at the time so there was quite a lot of pain. So I took quite a lot of oxycodone. Combine that with a natural curse to rapidly build tolerance anyhow and you end up with a scrip for 4 80s a day Plus 4 20mg instant release for breakthrough. Like I said, this was post op (had hardware removed) and only for 2 weeks. Most of the past year and a half I've been on 80-120mgs a day in 20mg instant release tablets.

Oh okay. Well, oxycodone is still infinitely more addictive than Xanax can ever be.
 
strong opiates are much more of a concern for addiction potential not to mention investigation--

serious drs wont even give you oxys unless u are severelllly needing them due to the abuse doctors have clearly shown in the past years

Believe what you like. I was simply worried by my docs worry, and I know from other peoples posts that benzo WDs are about as bad as it gets.

Just because I don't like being called a liar. More detailed info was mailed to my insurance company so I don't have it. Also that list isn't complete. I use two pharmacies especially for short fills so as not to set off any annoying flags, even though this is/was all legit.

HAH! I'd actually forgotten about my foray into fent. I didn't like it much. Irritated my skin, itches like crazy, and when you chew on a full 50 patch you just black out. I remember once I cut on into quarters, 2 on either side of the top and bottom gums. I crouched down by my night stand to get something, next thing I know I'm still crouched in the same exact position only it was several hours later.

Its just such a large amount, it was hard to fathom. How did you feel after stopping such a large dose after 2 weeks? There must have been some WD's, no? Anyway, as others have stated, Oxy is much more addictive than that of Xanax. Truth be told, both can be highly addictive, but the euphoria produced from Oxy can be unmatched for many.

Thanks again for all the replies (even the negative ones), it's all very helpful.

As for the oxy I took my last 20mg today. My doc offered me some percs to taper some more, but I declined. I'd rather just get the detox over with. Luckily for me, the flip side to quickly building tolerance seems to be quickly losing it. I went from 60mg to 20mg over 8 days and the only WD was some insomnia and the sniffles. Also, I got a nice buzz on 20mg for about an hour. Good times!

That drop from 500mg to 40mg was brutal, I admit it. In addition to the WDs my wrist was hurting more and more as my dose dropped. I moved on to 8mg codeine pills (OTC in Canada) combined with DXM just to escape the pain. I even attempted suicide. I went back to my doc, told him all this and he resumed my oxy at 80mg per day.

Yeah, that was my feeling on the matter as well. Hence my original question. :-)

Oh and guys, I didn't mention my past scrips to get involved in some kind of pissing match, I simply wanted to illustrate how unnerving it was for my doc, who had previously had no problem giving me enough pills to kill an elephant, to be so worried about scrip'ing Xanax.

Many doctors have a retarded overreaction & aversion xanax, and it is probably only going to get worse with Whitney Houston, (and whoever comes next) and the media blasting in capital letters WHITNEY DIES OF XANAX OVERDOSE.

One more question: with all the other benzos I've taken them sublingually. Can you use the same ROA with xanax?
 
I would just swallow them, they hit you fast anyway. I often bite them so they break into small pieces, but sublingual ? They taste like soap. I wouldn't do that.
