Hey everyone. I havent written a post in god knows how long... but I have a few questions. I've always been into opiates, such as roxys/oxys/lortabs... shit like that, but my fav drug is roxys. I've been seeing a psychiatrist for quite some time now, and at first I was prescribed the .5's of xanax, then got moved up to the 1 mg 4 times a day,. Now im at the sticks (2mg) a day ; 3 times a day..... I been researching withdrawls from xanax, and heard its just like an opiate withdrawl, and ive already been through that from the roxys, wasn't fun. I dont take xanax for recreational use, because I don't see how its a pleasant high (if there is, id love to know hehe) .. but what sort of withdrawls do you get, and how long do u have to be taking xanax to become addicted? Please get back to me... thanks a bunch bluelighters =P

Your doc is a moron for allowing you to take that high of a daily dosage. Unless you suffer from absolutely crippling depression, there is no nead for you to be taking 6mg per day.

No, benzo withdrawal is nothing like opiate withdrawal, aside from the fact that its extremely unpleasant.

For one thing, benzo withdrawal is FAR more physically dangerous. While you may feel like u are dying from opiate withdrawal, it really doesn't pose a physical danger. Benzo withdrawal can be very serious. Benzo withdrawal often causes seizures.
Not trying to scare you, but at the doses you are taking, if you were to quit cold turkey, I wouldnt be at all surprised if you had seizures.
However, coming off benzos is manageable if you do a slow taper.

As for "how long does it take to get addicted". There is no doubt that if you are up to taking 6mg per day, you are physically addicted. If you want to see for yourself, skip one of your doses and see what happens. You will likely get very anxious, maybe sweaty and generally feel like shit.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but Im just being honest. IMO you have gotten yourself into a bad situation. 6mg per day is not going to be easy to come off of. Good luck and do some research on this site. There are TONS of threads which deal with this subject.-DG

thanks... I don't take 3 a day though .. bc i know i wont remember shit the next day. I might take 1 1/2 or 2 at the most. But is there such thing as having fun on these drugs? I havent seen it yet, but alot of my friends love 'em for some odd reason

I never found xanax recreational. Though going from a panic attack to relaxed and calm feels quite nice. But I dont see potential for enhancing a good mood.

Anywhoo, I would taper down man. Its really the safest option. As daddysgone said, the physical withdrawls are more severe with benzos. Be safe, and good luck to you :)

This pretty much sums up the pharmy scene in Florida.....

All the best when it comes time to quit.

Let me know if you have any questions about stopping alpraz, as I have recently stopped 3mg/day.

Dude, just went through wd from a habit of shooting 90mg of roxi a few times a day and 3mg of xanax mixed with a couple mg of klonopin. It was really bad, still cannot sleep. The not sleeping part I did not have when I only wd from H.

I should have said not sleeping still after the "bogueness" was over. I took Tramadol throughout WD. Steady decreasing the doses while increasing the time. It seemed to help with the Opiate WD not so much with the Benzos. Also, I have had two seizures while previously coming off of benzos, you have to taper.

yeah im not living in FL anymore.. im now living in TN. Just wondering where I can find roxys around here =P Apparently, they're not too big around here as they are in FL

It really does, I was off of H for 12 years. After being a total junkie, allowed the doctors here to prescribe me Percocet, then Dilaudid, then Roxi 15 every four hours, then 30's. One time I didn't want to go to the hospital and my junkie self said they are only going to inject you with Dilaudid do it yourself. Yep, that led to six month of shooting Dilaudid, and Roxi. Neither had the legs of H, so I was never satisfied. Now that I quit I am bored but happier I guess. I guess like Renton I will choose life...haha.

i read that and i don't agree. it says the withdrawal symptoms lasted 9 days. benzo withdrawal lasts much longer than that. what do you think?

how are you doing now aftre coming off 3 mg/day? any residual effects?

I hear so much about Florida and the ease of getting narcotics even from doctors and it surprises me. I live in the midwest and every doctor Ive seen has always been very careful when it came to nartcotics. I have a friend in Cali who recently tried to get oxycodone from two different doctors after a surgery not related to pain, and he was denied. Its amazing to me that in Florida doctors could be handing out oxycodone scripts to anybody who walks in claiming they have back pain.

As for the OP I would bring up your worries to your doctor. I dont think you should be forced to go through cold turkey WD. Ive only taken xanax maybe 10 times in my life so Im not very familiar with it, but I do have a relative who had horrible anxiety and depression after her daughter died very young, and she was only prescribed 1mg per day which helped her a lot, so in comparison 6mg's seems pretty high.

I still can't sleep...three weeks.

Benzo withdrawal is not like opiate w/d. I find that opiate withdrawal is both hugely physical and mental/emotional. Benzo w/d is mainly internal (if you know what I mean-you may, if you've experienced it). A w/d from xanax/etc brings about excruciating anxiety/tension/internal pressure that never seems to be relieved. There is a rebound anxiety that is indescribable. Inability to sleep is a bitch. This part of w/d can happen with little use- just a few weeks of daily use. Your body/mind become so dependent on the benzo (even the ACT of taking the pill) that if you simply take 1/2 of what you'd usually take it usually eases the w/d a bit.

I'd seriously start a taper if I were you. ASAP, unless you plan on taking a high dose of benzos forever.

Florida docs prescribe something like %80 of the oxycontin in the U.S.... That's what the Vanguard episode "The Oxycontin Express" said.
