I wasn't sure where to put this, so I figured this might be the most appropriate place - sorry if its not!!

Anyway, I have to have a tooth extracted in about an hour, which absolutely terrified me to my very core (I know Im such a wimp ab9out these things!)

Anyway I would estimate that I have taken around 7mg of xanax in preparationas well as 40mg of propanolol to combat my racing heart and stuff.

Anyways my question is this really - as I'm feeling a lil fucked up, would it be a good idea to cancel the appointment, I mean I dont wan't to have to go there and being asked something like 'you look a lil out of it, have you ben taking anything. and then having him refuse to do it.

So what do you reckon, things will be cool if I just turn up or he will see me as some kind of junkie or something and refuse to do it? The problem is I dont have I could go to have something like that done without being a lil sedated as I am no scared of the dentist (already postponed the appointment a couple of times and now the tooth is really beginning to hurt)

AS always, any advice is much appreciated!! Many thanks

Tell him you simply took a little something to get you less anxious, not xanax but claim it to be one of your vicodin's from an earlier surgery and say it put you on your ass and didn't expect it.

Definitely agree with xxRavenxx!! You are gonna want pain meds after the extraction and many ppl take valium or xanax b4 dental apts due to anxiety. Tell him the truth!

Tell him the truth --- plus usually you can talk to them ahead of time about it and they'll advise you to take it, or even give you a small prescription for it. A lot of people are afraid to get teeth pulled. I've had lots of dental work, yeah it hurts, but once its over with you can just lay on an ice pack...it's not fun but it's something people have to deal with.

Tell him your a little drowsy because you just took a couple Valium for the anxiety. He might think that was a good idea. You will be given some pain medications after the operation. If you want some good ones just say that you have a hard time with pain in your mouth which is why you had to take the Valium. Maybe you will get some Percocet. That is how I did.

hey thanks everyone

He didnt seem to notice the drowisness at all so I didn't mention anything.

However, he did say that the roots of my teeth are very large and he was concenred about the tooth snapping while he was trying to take it out.

Never the less, he didnt offer me any medication for pain whatsoever! he told me to just take paracetamol :|

That's really lame, you should have asked that you may need something. You have to ask, I had to. He went through all the meds that he could offer, I said oxycodone with acetaminophen. He ascted like he didn't know what any of these meds were. I have a great dentist.

yeah to be honest some of the stuff which must be on my medical record by now prolly makes people very apprehensive about prescribing anything half decent.

I remember when it was first hurting, and I was told by the dentists receptionist to go to my dr for pain relief whilst i was waiting for an appointment with the dentist.

All he did is offer me antibiotics and diclofenac sodium (spelling mistake i think!) and antibiotics, when i asked the dentist for pain meds he basically said to take ibuprofen and paracetamol and gave me more antibiotics, which is kinda crappy *sigh*

I may be a little late posting but I'll tell you my story in case anyone else needs the advice.

I have a dental phobia. I don't have a problem with hands in my mouth or even the pain itself. My fear is the "anticipation" of pain. You know the kind of pain you get if you chewed on tin foil as a kid on a dare? I can handle the pain when I know it’s coming but otherwise I'm white knuckling the chair the whole time, even for just a cleaning. I told my new dentist (I just moved to the state I'm in now) I would pay out of pocket for the gas to keep me calm. Unfortunately, for whatever reason this dentist doesn't have gas. My dental phobia was bad enough where I searched for a new dentist but he was the only one who would take my out of state insurance. Noticing how much trouble I was having during the cleaning the dentist’s asst. told me she would talk to the dentist about my problem. This woman was a life saver. Now the dentist has it written in my file that for EVERY and ANY kind of appointment I have they call my pharmacy and have a script for 2 10mgs Valium filled.

Basically, I took the long way around to tell you or anyone else who reads this, just be honest. If you do have a problem mentally with having dental work done tell the dentist and see what he can do for you. If you're in pain and he doesn't offer, you should definitely ask for pain relief. As long as you're not asking every other week for pain killers, or not asking for relief for a little knick on your gums he should be reasonable. Personally, I’m confused as to why he didn't offer you anything after seeing your tooth and what you were dealing with. Who knows, Maybe he’s just a dick and you need to find a new dentist. Either way, ask, all he can do is say no and you'll just be where you were before, no harm done.

Hope my needlessly long post helps, if not you at least someone.

good god, last extraction i had, they knocked my ass out with what i assume was propofol. i was OUT completely. No euphoria, but no pain at all (till after wards).

I can't imagine having a live tooth removed without being knocked out. thats crazy. go find a modern dentist.
