An Indiana man whose age, white hair and folksy style helped conceal his role as a drug courier was sentenced Wednesday — his 90th birthday — to three years in federal prison for hauling more than a ton of cocaine to Michigan.

"All I can tell you, your honor, is I'm really heartbroken I did what I did," Leo Sharp told a judge. "But it's done."

Wearing a dark suit and tie, the frail man stuffed his hands in his pockets as he stood in front of U.S. District Judge Nancy Edmunds. His attorney occasionally reached over to put a reassuring grip on his shoulder or a supportive stoke on his back.

There was no dispute over Sharp's crimes: He admitted last fall that he drove loads of cocaine into Michigan for a Mexican drug organization, one of 19 people charged in the case. The government said he was paid more than $1 million.

"I don't doubt it will be difficult," Edmunds told Sharp of prison, "but respect for the law requires there be some custody."

His age aside, Sharp still isn't a typical criminal. He fought Nazis in Italy during World War II and was awarded a Bronze Star for it. The Michigan City, Indiana, man also is known for growing prize-winning daylilies and even contributed 5,000 plant bulbs to his community.

Defense lawyer Darryl Goldberg focused on Sharp's past, not the trouble that landed him in court, while asking the judge to keep his client out of prison.

"This is not how we honor our heroes, whether they've fallen from grace or not," Goldberg said.

The attorney spent several minutes reading a history of the Battle of Mount Battaglia — "German blood on the end of their bayonets" — before the judge finally interrupted him.

Goldberg repeatedly warned that Sharp's dementia would be a burden for the U.S. Bureau of Prisons. He acknowledged Sharp "went into this eyes wide," but said his condition led him to use "bad judgment" and become a drug courier.

During brief remarks, Sharp said he wished to grow Hawaiian papayas on his property in Florida to pay off his $500,000 penalty to the government.

"So sweet and delicious that people on the mainland will love it," he said.

That won't be possible: The government is seizing and selling the land.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Christopher Graveline said criminals don't get a pass simply for military service. He noted that Sharp used his age and appearance as a tool to shake the suspicions of police on cross-country trips before he was finally busted during a traffic stop on Interstate 94, west of Detroit, in 2011.

"They bargained on him not getting caught," the judge said in agreement.

Edmunds said linking dementia to Sharp's crimes was an "insult to all the people who have dementia and don't get involved in illegal activity."

Despite going to prison, Sharp still got a significant break. The government was seeking a five-year sentence, and sentencing guidelines called for a minimum of 14 years.

Well, this left a bad taste my mouth.

Congrats you pigs for imprisoning a 90 year-old man with Dementia.

CLEARLY he's a huge danger to society if left to roam the streets of America as a "free" man - cane/walker and all.

Ironically, had people like this man not gone overseas to fight the Nazis for our freedom, we just may have been speaking German right now.

You truly are ass clowns - fucking pigs, you should be spat on.

So ficked up. Fighting back then is nothing like waar Therese days. Those guys went on suicide missions. They were fighting a well formed army not a bunch of mujhadeen with aks and RPGs. This dude flight the Nazi war machine. Plus the fact he is still upright, this guy is a national treasure. Yes let's let a bronze star hero die in jail for driving a load of plant extract. Fuck this government. I really hope it gets overturned or he can get an awesome lawyer to file am appeal.

AHHH!!! THis is so fucked up. And what is even more FUCKED UP! is the fact that he had to do this b/c he obviously didn't have enough money. War on drugs is nothing but a war on people.

Just think all the horrible shit this guy saw , Nazis dug into bunkers with machine guns, land mines, grenades...guy is a national hero.

I remember my grandfather telling me how the Nazis waiting in bunkers scattered all over the west coast of France were equipped with "Maschinengewehr 42" machine guns, which are capable of firing around 1200 rounds per minute.

I recall the look on his face while he was explaining to me the sound that terrifying full auto Mauser made:

My grandfather said:
It sounded like someone ripping sandpaper. Only when those savages had to reload did we have a chance to advance without being chopped into red confetti. Even the courageous amongst us were momentarily losing our ability to control our bowels.

Steven Spielberg's "Saving Private Ryan" has a segment near the beginning of the film which features American infantry storming the beaches of Normandy. And in that segment, the actors playing the Nazis in the bunkers are in fact equipped with the same type of machine gun, as well as perhaps a few Maschinengewehr 34s. The only difference is that the sound of the guns shooting was slowed down for "artistic and dramatic effect."

There were some really shitty jobs people had in that invasion. I know there were teams of men that were strapped to these large tether balloons that were supposed to serve as a distraction and as a blocker for whatever may be behind it. So they invaded the beach essentially just being strapped to a large balloon. Maybe they had a sidearm and I'm sure they had knives, but if you were assigned here you weren't carrying a rifle or anything.

Yea I think thats the Americans called Hitler's buzzsaw BC of the massive rate of fire. I have a feeling he will be free on appeal and I'm sure there are ppl protesting to at least punish him but not send him to jail. Let him live out his days at home. What is he going to be rehabilitated in jail? Think about his mistakes? No, he's going to die. 90 is pretty old considering the avg american life expectancy plus the fact he served in Europe in WWII against the Germans he should at least be given home detention instead of hard time.
