At least six people were killed and 1,000 injured today after two planes crashed into the twin towers of New York's landmark World Trade Center, CNBC television reported.
The report said the FBI was investigating a possible plane hijacking ahead of the crash.
CNN quoted an eyewitness as saying a small twin-engined plane hit the first tower, tearing a huge gash into the upper floors of the building.
It said that 18 minutes after the initial accident, a second plane tore through the World Trade Center's second tower.
TV viewers watched live as the second plane hit the second tower.
Eyewitnesses were quoted as saying that it looked like plane may have been directed at the tower deliberately.
A senior government official said they were pursuing reports that one or both of the planes were hijacked and that the crashes may have been the result of a suicide mission.
The source stressed that the reports were preliminary and officials did not know the cause of the crashes.
"It certainly doesn't look like an accident," said a second government official.
There was no immediate word on injuries or fatalities in the twin disasters, which happened shortly before 9am (2300 AEST) and then right around 9am. The towers were struck by bombers in February 1993.
Large holes were visible in sides of the 110-storey buildings, landmark twin towers. The tops of the twin towers were obscured by the smoke.
Thousands of pieces of what appeared to be office paper came drifting over Brooklyn, about three miles from the tower, one witness said. The Centre bombing on February 26, 1993, killing six people and injured more than 1,000 others.
The World Trade Center consists of two 110-storey skyscrapers and are New York's tallest towers. One of the towers is two metres taller than the other.
About 40,000 people work inside the two-building center; more than 150,000 people enter the complex every day for business and pleasure.
