I'm seriously considering writing a sort of non-fictional historical book about the houses and buildings I've visited while "urban exploring." I have a few basic ideas by now... but I'm wondering, has anyone here written a book? How do you go about clearing all the legal aspects, finding a publisher, etc?

I don't know if anyone's written an actual book that was published by a publisher. There a plenty of zines and home published mags/books on the topic. It's great to see photos all over the world of peoples UE adventures.

From a legal point of view, it would probably be easier for you to publish yourself.

petersko has written a book... or perhaps its just a long essay. i came across it somehow and i think i still have it. i wonder if hes done anything with it.

I *highly* recommend buying the latest copy of "Writer's Market" (issued every year), and perhaps subscribe to (or peruse an archive of) a magazine like "Writer's Digest" just for budding authors. There are surely a ton of FAQs online about the topic as well, though I must admit I've never really looked...

Have you checked to see what books have already been wrote on the subject...? It's a pretty common topic, look around.

Its not very easy to get a published book unless you have extremely good material or good contacts in the industry. You can always publish it yourself, I think that runs around 1-2K depending on preferences.

Get a copy of the Writer's Market. It's about 30 bucks, but invaluable for novice writers. Don't go the self-publishing route; you'll never make back what you spend. I should warn you that for someone to just get an idea in their head and see that idea materialize into published work is really, really difficult. For nonfiction, unless you have extensive knowledge on the subject or can sell the angle as something really unique and interesting, you're probably not going to have much luck.
