Would you consider Dextromethorphin as a psychedelic?

With regards to ibogaine, it sounds nothing like DXM to me. Not to mention that its physical side effects are nothing short of alarming.

Yes, for those complaining about the physical effects of DXM, ibogaine sounds *much* worse. However, the mind-movie / transcendent type vision part seems similar, likewise the after-trip anti-depression state (the later something shared in common with ketamine and MXE). Maybe the trip reports I read were not typical... I have no desire to try it due to the physical effects (lucid dreaming techniques work good enough for me right now :) ), but I would be curious if someone has tried both.

I guess someone somewhere in the last several years found a term to lump all these vivid dream-state producers together: "oneirogens". Both DXM and ibogaine among others are listed. The common theme between ibogaine and DXM is NMDA antagonism *plus* opioid receptor agonist (though of course with way different profiles and strength..).

Based on the huge variety of pharmacological profiles of oneirogens listed in the Wiki (which include DMT, salvia, muscimol, deliriants, some opioids, etc.), though, I think we have a lot to learn about the nature of the dream.

Is it something that has a breakthrough level like salvia?

Maybe, I've never done salvia. DXM to me is a poor "party" drug. Actually, all dissociatives are to me, but I could see people having more fun on MXE or ketamine.

You do need to take a fair bit to get to the 3rd plateau+... this is where the powder helps. DXM isn't the most pleasant chemical even by itself, but all those extra ingredients can cause quite a bit more discomfort.

The other thing I noticed about DXM and other dissociatives, but especially DXM, is that (for me) they have almost no OEVs but a lot of closed-eye visuals or visuals in the dark. This is where "set and setting" really do come into play, you need to set with this in mind.

Everyone reacts to chemicals differently of course... a significant portion of the population cannot metabolize DXM very well and I imagine a DXM trip would not be as pleasant for them...

William White's DXM FAQ claims that roughly 1/3 of people really like DXM, 1/3 of people don't care one way or the other, and 1/3 of people really dislike it.

like others have said, the closed eye visuals are the most "psychedlic" visuals i've gotten from any drug. Ive taken lsd, shrooms, weed, 25i/c nbomes.. and other random shit in my years, but as far as closed eye visuals nothing compared to DXM. I mean, at a 3rd plateau dose you will literally see the most bizarre, colorful, animated creations while your eyes are closed.. as far as open eye visuals go, very dissociative to say the least..

not so much patterns and shit moving on everything like LSD etc. Its a very interesting drug, and IMO a VERY psychedelic experience. However, I also wish I had never taken it... more than like, once or twice. Abused it way too much in highschool when I had access to no other classic psychedlics which I find much more rewarding and less confusing/zombifying as DXM was...

Also, like others have said, the "magic" really does go away with frequent use.. the first few times were amazing, but honestly doing it every week or so it really just gets you straight up high and fucked up after a while. I truly loved it at the time though.

Even pharmaceutical doses (30-60 mgs) grant me euphoria.

The DXM head space, abstract thinking and unique wording. Cannabis sends me deeper into my conscious being. Appreciating the beauty of life with no desire for anything. No food, no sex, no worries, no problem. :)

These are the kind of things that I just don't get. I've taken what I've thought to have been very high doses of DXM and really they have never done anything remotely profound but just left me in a confused, dysphoric kind of state I could easily use to explain someone without experience with serotonergic psychedelics or dissociatives mistaking for "what it's like". I've always had some kind of interest in DXM because of things like this. I've kind of explained it away by allowing myself to believe its just some kind of deleriant type thing because that's the only way I could explain the way I felt when I took it. I don't think I ever hallucinated in any sense from eating DXM but if I were to have hallucinated that's the kind of thing I would expect from how confused it made me feel. Literally having no idea what is real. I guess I can see how that's like tripping really hard on a dissociative, which once you hit a certain point to me is like completely having no concept of if what I'm experiencing is real or not or whether time exists or I exist or anything ever existed in the first place. To me that's something in and of itself, though.

I guess what I'm really asking here is how does DXM work? Is it something that has a breakthrough level like salvia? It's never, ever worked for me and I've taken what I assumed to be high doses. I grant you I have never successfully used any brands of product that people normally seem to (the only syrup I've chugged without puking is Delsym, I did an extraction with several boxes of Sucrets DM that actually gave me the most substantial effects in terms of being enjoyable tht I've ever gotten from any attempt at a DXM trip, and any time I've eaten triple C's or those liqui-gel things I've always puked at some point before I'd say anything was really "going on"). I know a buddy of mine who loves DXM used to swear by these things called DEXalone but Im under the impression that they aren't produced anymore. It's a drug I've completely given up on ever understanding even though Im pretty sure there's something to it that I haven't experienced. If anyone has any advice on how to experience that something successfully I'd actually appreciate it.

its a drug to be experienced in bed, alone, with your eyes closed, listening to music. not interactive like serotnergics where going to a museum, hanging with friends, or going to a concert is a good thing to do. DXM really shines in the inner world....just meditate while you are on it and it will take you very very far. walk around with your eyes open and socialize with people on DXM....its just weird, wonky and not that great.
