would you be able to control your drug use if drugs were legal?

I'm a big advocate for legalization of all drugs, but the thought just occured to me...

if frigin oxycontin was legal, i think i would be eating the things like skittles every day. I have absolutly no self-control. The only way i stay clean is because the avaliabilty of drugs at my school is horribly bad.

This is a big argument for the continued crimalization of drugs, do you think its a good one? Would you go crazy if you could get a bottle of oxycontin for 5 dollars sitting right next to the asprin in the OTC pain aisle?
 
well, apparently marijuana consumption in the united states, where it is prohibited, is higher than in the netherlands where it is tacitly tolerated.. on the other hand, marijuana is something that is only incidentally addictive.. as opposed to oxys. whenever i've tried to quit smoking, i've wished it was illegal.. so that it would be much harder to give into temptation. there's a big difference between walking to your corner store and meeting up with a dealer to score.

my grand scheme of drug legalization involves a drug card issued after a physical examination by a physician and a mental examination by a psychologist/psychiatrist.. you would take this card to a government licensed "drug" store, and it would allow you to purchase any drug.. however, your maximum allotment of any particular drug would vary depending on your mental and physical profile..

granted, this is putting too much power in the hands of the medical community.. but for those who disliked this system, i'm sure there'd still be a black market happy to supply you with as much as you wanted.. it would just be a black market that required a lot more effort to engage in, and whose profit margins were significantly lower (hence lowering the incentive for violent criminal/terrorist organizations to participate in)..
 
^^ thats an interesting idea with the drug card i've never heard it. I believe that the extreme of everything being legal to be very tough to get and i will settle for less until we get there, but one thing is clear as the white fucking light

Who better to believe than a man who has sentanced hundreds, thousands, of small petty dealers in an attempt to control something so uncontrollable. He knows our "get tough on drugs" laws are not working in the slightest. I suggest a read. And i suggest EVERYONE here on this board to act in one small way to help the legalization of drugs. Even if its just breaking mis-information during a sesh when someone talks about how LSD stays in your spine. It does make a difference

I think my drug use would be more scheduled. Exemple: Someone has an 1/8 of white widow, so thats super dank, so I would probably buy it regardless if I had the money for it or not. Some drugs only come around once in a while and I feel like I have to buy these just to hold onto. Now if I could go down to the store and buy dank weed, rolls, and shrooms any danm day I probably wouldn't just because I know it will always be there.

I think weaker minds would die off and only the most boring, hard willed people would remain to create a super race.

On a side note, i wonder if the prices would be similar? even relatively speaking?
i mean the supply curve is what sets price pretty much in the drug market.

I could control it, I have scripts and I control them unless I get all nuts and depressed, then I just eat them like candy. It's not fun to like using drugs recreationally and really NEEDING them. If only I could get OC's for my knee's...
 
Of course I could. I control my use of the legal drugs I have access to in unlimited quantities (such as Xanax, Rohypnol and GHB) just fine. I control my use of illegal drugs just fine too. Money (or lack of it) is not an issue in my illegal drug use.

Making drugs legal would do a lot for the human gene pool as has already been mentioned here.
 
I believe that A LOT of people would have addiction problems if opiates and benzos, or ANY drug was available all the time at the store down the street... Myself included.
 
Well, obviously Joe Burnout isn't going to be able to curb his drug usage if it's cheaper and readily available - but maybe due to a reduced social stigma he'd be encouraged to go out and find work.

(Drug Culture, anyone?)
 
He, I can bet any amount that there would be *huge* number of people using Heroin (in tabs, just like at the beginning of the century). Also other opiates/opioids would be used dramatically more often.
As for meth/E/weed - I think that the situation would be pretty much the same as is now, maybe usage would rise just a little. Why? I think because there are already millions of people using those drugs and they don't give a sh*t about the law. With Heroin it's a different story - it has its stigma of an "hard and evil + very addictive drug" which scares many people. But if it was legal, there would be no more scary stories and myths about this drug.

I'm all for liberalisation of drug-laws.
Addicts could get their "fix" in tablet form at special places or pharmacies, where only 100% pure Heroin tablets would be given, and not some street dope containing 20-40% mixed with who-knows-what and used IV. People would have a choice - question nr.1:whether I want to use H irregularly or regularly and become an addict, but all would be done perfectly legal and with "pure stash".

So do you think it's better to close the eyes to 100$ billion heroin market, and thousands & thousands of opiate addicts, and throw them to jails? I don't think any junkie deserves jail-time simply because he has his week's supply of smack.

Or maybe you have better idea how to control the heroin & other hard illegal drugs?
 
It sure as hell would cut out the finding the dope and finding the way to pay for the dope, but as for being beneficial and myself being able to keep it together i dont know about all that
 
The only part about drugs being illegal that stops me from using is the punishment.

As far as use purposes, I could really have any drug I want when I want, it's the thought of going back to federal prison that keeps my ass clean.

Getting drugs is easy, getting away with getting drugs is the tricky part.

Drug laws don't stop people from using, they only incriminate those who do use.
 
Wouldn't make any difference to me with regards to frequency of use. Everything is available to me as it is where I am. You need to control the drug and not let it control you in the long run. Otherwise you may burn out fast.
 
I strongly believe all drugs should be legal. Our tax money should go to more important regions. But then there are too many "Joe Idiots" that will die by being careless and lame.
 
I do not see how it would make a difference. Most people have no problem attaining their drugs as it is now. With them being legal it wouldn't make so much of a difference. Instead of making a phone and going for a trip, you could now walk to the corner store and pick up.

The government spin it one way, and you are no better than them because you are just trying to spin it the other.
Using heroin is bad news, therefore I will never touch it, and I am glad it's illegal, not only for my sake but for that of my friends too and my countrymen who are weaker willed than I.

You obviously don't know very much about heroin. People throw their lives away on heroin because it is illegal, and the drugs are so expensive people have to do illegal things to be able to afford them. Heroin isn't very dangerous either, it is just there is no control on it so people don't know what they are doing. Another result of prohibition. Lets not forget about how the majority of heroin ODs happen, heroin+alcohol and heroin+benzos. If these people knew how dangerous this was, I doubt it would happen as often. Lastly, no matter how much dope you do Narcan can bring you back, if everyone knew this people like you wouldn't be spreading misinformation. Heroin is a lot safer than people think, you included.
