Two doses of gabapentin, both pretty small doses too, does not make you dependent on the drug. You have to worry about seizures and stuff if you're dependent on anti-convulsants. It's not a really recreational drug IMO, it's just a decent nerve pain medication, I think pregabalin (Lyrica) is a lot better but just like gabapentin, if you use it on consecutive days, like most people who have nerve pain or otherwise benefit from the effects these drugs induce, I've noticed extreme lack of efficacy if you take it multiple days in a row, with Lyrica too. Was scripted 1200mg a day of pregabalin, but the effects wore off so quickly that it only worked if I took it once or twice a week. Even taking it every other day produced tolerance to it's effects, making it pretty useless to me for anxiety, insomnia, and an adjunct to my opioid narcotics for chronic pain.
The risks vs rewards are just leaning in favor of being too risky to be worth it. I never experienced anything (from either Lyrica, or Neurontin) that felt so rewarding from a recreation standpoint, OR therapeutically to reduce anxiety, insomnia, or significantly reduce pain levels enough that I thought it would be worth being dependent on yet another GABAergic medication (I'm prescribed a ton of benzodiazepines that I find way more effective for anxiety and insomnia and as adjuncts to opioids).
