WORK SUCKS: Talk About Your Job

i'm going in to work tomorrow. my first job that isn't consulting or volunteer in over two years. i'm a real employee with tax withholding and all. being unemployed was ruining my soul.

it's working in a bike shop, which is relevant to my interests. i'll be making less per week than i did per day before walking away from my career. whatever. something to do while i figure out a new direction.

been writing again and looking into mfa programs. gonna make a go at my original plan of academia and publishing. before marketing comms salaries lured me off track.
 
job sucked. no one is making bikes right now. i was stacking helmets on a ladder for a bit over minimum wage. my coworker was a teenager who was shy about getting on the ladder, as he should be. quit after one shift. they understood and thanked me for that shift.

they did have my favorite chain lube. dude came in in and said, "so i just spray this all over my my chain?" i explained one drop per roller and that bottle will last you longer than your chain. went in and bought a smaller bottle myself the next day.
 
Haha. Yeah. Aren't most of the bike shops still closed? I always thought it would be fun to work in a bike shop since building bikes all day would be fun.

But yeah the pay probably wouldn't be so good. And with the rise of online sales, shops have to up charge like mad to make cash, or make a lot of repairs.

Go work at kozy's. They are the worst. Brought a wheel in back in march since the lockring was stripped and they were like...we can't remove it as the lockring is stripped. No shit..why I brought it to you guys. Ended up using my buddies vice.
 
i've never worked for kozy's but i've bought tubes from them becuase they have a location walking distance from my apartment.

pretty sure i got a pump from them too. works like a charm and was about 20 bucks. thing lives in my apartment mail closet.

Their south loop location was nice. Was going there for years back in the day. Halsted location is meh. I live right there. Perhaps I just have less patience these days. Boulevard bikes is the best. Dude can fix anything.

Can't ride in the winter. Can't wait until spring. I think my days of brakeless fixed gear are over as my knees are shot. Gonna build me up a 1x10 surly midnight special I think. Now that I am 40 gears are allowed :)

Trying to move out of this city. Too flat. Too cold. Too much dope. I always think CO would be amazing. Climbing massive hills, and then flying back down.
 
you live in chicago and don't ride winter? come on. double gloves. double socks. heavy boots.

i've been eyeing 1x systems for so long. even trek is in board with it now. but both of my bikes are double chain rings. one day.
 
I used to 24/7. Have the lobster gloves even. Something happened to my body temp regulation lately. Its like my soul is damaged and when the cold goes into me, I freeze hard. I can ride up to 40 degrees or so. Have wiped so many times in snow or ice. Its fun until you get older :)

The weather we are having tonight? Can barely stand outside for 10 minutes. Feel horrible for anyone sick sleeping outside.

Hopefully by next winter will be in better condition. As long as I start riding in the spring and keep it up, should be good by winter. Fell out of the loop big in 2020. Building a new bike will surely motivate me.

But yeah those 1x are nice. 650b fat tires are nice too. Especially for our crappy streets. Have to ride a 23c front on my track bike due to clearance and just a crappy experience. No clue why I built that thing in 2018. Still looking at frames. But for sure will be a 1x.
 
I work with animals right now. It's not bad but when it's slow i get bored and go on BL.

I was in finance before i got diagnoses bipolar and ended up homeless.

Hopefully i can use my degree to get back into there now that my case is dismissed.

Looking forward to 2021.

I haven't worked since april.
My last job of five years was the shit. Although I hated to go in (anxiety shit), once there I would shine. The only thing I disliked was the sorry sommamabitches that got a paycheck for keeping their thumb in their arses and making me work double to get through my shift. Called a couple out back at shift change and they never came out... mfs.
I will say that it aint easy (none of it) but can and will get done... that is work, am I right?
Iron work/welding, now... that is i different kinda work/not work. That is fun and rewarding. Have to exempt that as a "job", so....
 
My job literally saved my life and improved it next level. I basically get paid to chill all day, well most days. My main responsibilities are basic office skills like answering the phone, filing, etc. But when it is slow I look up random things on the internet or here on BL talking to people. I love the hours as well. Monday-Friday 9-5 with the weekends off. I mean you can't ask for a better schedule in my book. Plus, my boss and coworker are very easygoing. We get lunch out alot and talk alot of shit. Anyways, I feel I deserve this awesome job because I worked almost 20 years in the supermarket industry as a cake decorator (hard, physcial labor) and working for a big corporation sucks ass imo.

The one I worked in last summer had more bikes in the shop than our distributors had in their warehouses. Insanity.

It's fun to be a grease-monkey for a while, but it gets boring fast.
Fixing old, rusty fuckers with integrated gears that fall into a million pieces is not fun at all.
 
Someone chose my major for me when I enrolled at uni and it seemed to have not worked in their favor lol.

So what i have to say is why do people try to make choices for others?

This did not age well. LOL.

At the time I typed that statement, I had a decent job as a social work case manager and was applying to PhD programs to further my education.

UPDATE: Was not accepted to any PhD programs. Haven't had a full time job in over a year. Womp womp :hypno:
 
Been unemployed for a good few years now. I havent been sitting on my ass though - did two college courses in that time and graduated from each, one in Journalism and the other in Audio Production/Engineering but if I need to get my life together yesterday, its only getting harder and harder to the longer I leave it. Its not that I'm 'leaving it', depression and anxiety had been the cause, but I've even stopped self medicating now and and I'm working with the welfare services to get myself back on track. I want it and need it so much for my sanity - I know I'm better than this; I know I have something to offer and I'm done with living like this. Definitely going to need someone to take a chance on me though but I'll never get there if I dont try. Wish me luck, I need all the positive energy I can get sent my way 👍🏼

Sounds like you made some progress with your college certs and things that can only help your cause.

Me personally, I'm about to get a gig helping out a mental health/addiction counselor. Which is a dream of mine to get into so I'm suuuuper excited 😊
 
I haven’t worked since March 2020. And I have to get a job ASAP. I can pay all my bills thru the next 6 weeks, but then I’m out of funds.

I’m worried about getting a job. I only need to work 25 hours a week or so. But I’m constantly plagued by health issues that put me in the hospital, or take me to the ER. I make kidney stones chronically due to a congenital issue. I have 2-3 stone surgeries each year. I have anemia and I get admitted for blood transfusions. 6 weeks ago I was admitted for postural hypotension, meaning that my BP was fine if I laid down, but when I stood up, it dropped to 72/40. My electrolytes are a mess so now my doctor has me drinking a large bottle of Gatorade each day. She also started me on Synthroid for a new diagnosis of hypothyroidism.

Right now I have a fever and I know I have a UTI that was not cleared up by Macrobid, an antibiotic that typically kills UTIs. I have a bottle of 100 urinary test strips which I use to test my urine when I’m in pain. RBCs usually mean I have a stone. WBCs usually mean I have an infection, and that’s what is showing up now. The instructions say I need to wait 2 minutes to allow the WBCs to fully develop its purple color, if an infection is present. The 2nd the test strip hits my urine, it turns the darkest shade of purple indicated, so I’ve no doubt I have an infection.

I don’t know what will happen if I have to leave work due to illness. I get migraines, too, but as long as I have my maxalt, they generally go away. I’m worried about the rest of my health issues.
