What is a wishbone?
It's a conspicuous bone that we reap from the carcass of the flesh we've bred and slaughtered and devoured for dinner;
A smug testament to the arrogance and the appalling lack of respect which is endemic to all human animals;
It is covered in grease when we grip it in fat greedy fingers, and we wish for more than we have while we defile what's left of the creature from which it came;
It is a lesson to our children that the destruction of everything we touch is the thing which makes us thrive; it is proof that we are giddy when we can bring an end to anything which is weaker than ourselves. It is what makes us delude ourselves that we are powerful gods, when in truth we are slaves to ritual and urge.
The wishbone reminds us how desperately we cling to the top of the food chain.
