Alcoholics are being warned to go slow when trying to quit drinking following reports Amy Winehouse died after ignoring her doctor's advice not to go cold turkey.

Britain's Sun tabloid is citing family sources as saying the 27-year-old "Rehab" singer suffered a fatal seizure brought on by a sudden, three-week abstinence from booze.

The report says the singer's family believes her tiny frame could not cope with the loss of alcohol in her veins after many years of binge drinking.

Canadian addiction specialists confirm going from heavy drinking to nothing can be lethal.

Rob Hadley of the Vancouver Addiction Centre says the body develops a level of chemical requirement and if it's not met, it literally goes into shock.

Hadley says quitting requires addicts to get treatment from professionals that will reduce dependency without risking their health.

Daniel Jordan of the Sunshine Coast Health Centre says alcohol is one of the most dangerous drugs to detox from.

He says the chance of dying from a withdrawal from alcohol is actually much more than for heroin.

no shit - is it surprising that quitting alcohol cold turkey can be lethal? Talk about a need for harm reduction,

and then this:

He says the chance of dying from a withdrawal from alcohol is actually much more than for heroin.

Since when did heroin w/d start killing people??? Nice reporting CBC, fucking morons.

I guess the word 'heroin' just scares people or something...

People die from heroin withdrawl more often then you might think. Its abnormal for young healthy people to die from heroin withdrawl but throw in some kinda underlying health problem.

What does a tiny frame have to do with anything? Since they are claiming her death is due to DT, that's an asinine thing to say. It's even more asinine because they tried to dress it up with allusions to depression.

very true, and a good lesson to send through the rehabilitation system. cranking down your seizure threshold is disastrous, especially if your lifestyle is sometimes erratic. going cold turkey might get you back to a relatively functional level soon, but it makes the post-acute withdrawal (the part that catches most people) a lot worse--maybe explaining why her seizure threshold could have still been so erratic, even after weeks of alcohol abstinence.

going slow when quitting depressants is extremely important, unless you don't mind your inner and outer life needlessly reaching absolute bottom, reaching the very extremes of anxiety and neurological plasiticity (from flashbulb trauma, though it's more of a continuous LED light during w/d) and destabilizing your entire "neurological future". (this is my sense of it, partly from anecdotal reports)

and hospitals often quote 2 weeks as the time-frame for becoming stable after withdrawing from depressants... they are dangerously out of date here, by a matter of months or years.
What does a tiny frame have to do with anything?
the change-per-time in ethanol-per-volume-of-blood is greater?

I wouldn't want to go into sudden w/d from alcohol and it seems like being Amy Winehouse would give her the choice to switch to benzos and taper down with those. That seems like the healthiest, safest option. Its too late now though of course.

great, exactly what I wanted to read on day three of detoxing =(

If what they said about her buying coke and mdma shortly before is true, that could have done it. Addicted to alcohol I get scared taking any kind of stimulant without being sufficiently drunk, otherwise I can't enjoy the drugs, and have an uncomfortable scary time. I'm on 5mg of meth (fior adhd) now and 1mg kpin on my 3rd day without booze and I'm.....ok... flighty though, not focused like I would be if I had a beer *or 6 in me instead of the kpin... which sucks, I should be writing something important now not dicking around on BL... blah, later all

If you are taking Klonopin then I wouldn't worry about alcohol withdrawal since both directly exert their effects on the same neurotransmitter (GABA or gamma-Aminobutyric acid). In fact, benzodiazepines (such as Clonazepam (Klonopin)) are typically used as treatment for alcohol withdrawal. If you are feeling jittery, anxious, sweaty and agitated, you can try upping your dosage of Klonopin from 1mg to 1.5 or 2mg. Also, it probably would be best to not combine alcohol with methamphetamine because both have significant diuretic properties.

ph0r you should be fine with the klonopin, it'll just take a while to adjust. increase the dose if needed, and then taper back down so it's not permanent (slowly). that "flighty" feeling is the first feeling of GABA withdrawal i get as the WD is sneaking up on me, and it really screws with me...

What a way to die..........you do drugs & get drunk alot past couple years & then you try & quit & it backfire, crazy!

Oh Amy... she was a treasure as far as I'm concerned.. on par with princess Di and all that.

If she was w/ding from booze, the H wouldn't help much in my experience.. I've tried to substitute the two (well, various opiates really) and I could never enjoy the opiates (as the w/d just kept getting worse as I waited) till I got a couple drinks in me. Adding stims on top of alcohol w/d is HELL and asking for trouble... meh fuck all this speculation, we gotta be patient and wait for the real tox reports.

Sad.. if she was clean that long and just snapped and went on a huge binge.. it's such a common occurence for people to come back to dope with no tolerance, shoot their old usual dose and be fucked. All famous performing artists should be required to sign up on bluelight to be better drug users.

I'm doin the kpin thing. HAD to drink the last couple days because I had to take my adhd meds to finish writing my school transfer essay and that took focus I didn't have.. back to the pills though. It's creepy how much it takes for me to be comfortable, I really fucked myself up drinking so hard for the last decade. I've been saving up my scripts for this though, gotta stick to it. I'm up to 5mg today, I'm thinking another 1 or 2 before I sleep. .. It's weird, I don't know what to think, I feel guilty using the pills, but I know it's way better for me. I don't get as horribly depressed the next day if I use the pills and not drink. Just gotta stick with it. I don't have much to do with my brain so stayin away from the adhd stuff which makes it harder to not drink.

Well atleast something good may come of this. I honestly thought i was going to die coming off alcohol when in the DT's once. There where a few times i had full on anti-cholinergic type delirium hallucinations. It's dreadful to say the least. My dumb ass back then about 8 years ago for some reason decided that crack might relieve wd symptoms 8( . Needless to say as soon as it hit i knew i was in for a bad one and lay on the floor shaking with cold sweat until i could open a bottle of benzos.

So it can happen and the withdrawals really do make coming off opiates look fun

lol dude I was hallucinating on day three ( I took my meds /meth, even with kpins and it was overwhelming) Was just starting to earlier in the day, constant floaters and stuff darting in my peripheral vision, at the end of the night walking home with a bag of beer I saw a fox that couldn't have been real, and when I walked up to the front of my building the fucking 'for rent' sign FLEW at me from a few feet away, I jumped back and everything lol I was like damn, I really hope no one saw that lol

I've definitely feared for my life a few times the way my breathing was going so fast and I could see my pulse in my arm and my heart beating in my chest while just sitting in a chair, not to mention the mental 'gottadrinkgottadrinkneedadrinkwhycantihaveadrinkmaybejustoneNOgottagetadrink'... the whole world just sucking, and your body crumbling. Thank got for benzos, I've got over 100mg kpin saved up, no goin back.. hell if I detox and can drink socially from time to time I'll be happy..
