ahhh nooo, as Willy Wonker says "scrap that reverse it" (or something along those lines, i caught a bit of it again lasr night) santa is worse because everything the myth once stood for has now been TOTALLY degraded by the effects of consumerism unlike faeries... they never evolved into such a commercialistic tool.

that's why santa is worse in my eyes. in general i dont think that you should really be upholding beliefs that you dont personally believe in, anyway.

are you saying that you kill fairies? 8o

When I was little people used to tell me not to point 'cause it puts holes in the air and fairies fall out and die. So yeah according to that line of reasoning I guess I've killed a few.

^^^[edit: meant for drEaMtiMe] While i don't believe in Santa and i don't beleive in what Christmas literally stands for, if i ever have kids i will bring them up to believe in Santa and the magic of christmas. You can say all you want about the commercialism of it but to me it stands for a time of sharing with your family and being able to get a time where everybody can get togehter.

Sad as it seems the only reason i see a lot of my relatives is for weddings and funerals. Christmas is the only other time where you have chance to get everyone together in a time of celebration and happiness regardless of wether you believe in it's true meaning. The memories of christmas past as a child have come to mean so much more to me now as an adult that i can appreciate that those moments become fewer and farther between, and that's not even mentioning the excitement and happiness felt as a child at the time. I just can't see myself denying my children if i have any that little slice of happiness no matter what pretense it's built upon.

Just my 2c

EXACTLY!

i believe that the world is 99% filled with fucking idiots..... would u recommend i pass that on to my kids?

i think ill go with santa, call me crazy :\

While in general Santa may have degraded into a commercial tool doesn't mean that you have to embrace that side of it. While I loved the presents I got from him (and my parents dont have much cash so it was never much to begin with) my favourite part of Christmas was baking shortbread or mincepies and leaving the best one out for Santa and going and picking grass to put in a bucket for the reindeer. The magic of a tradition that I now felt I was becoming a part of meant more to me than the few presents (I'm talking bubble bath, some boiled lollies, a nice, rare, piece of fruit like a mango and something fun like a beachball) ever did.

I will definately bring my kids up to believe in Santa, Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy. They are some of the best memories I have. When I figured out it wasn't true I wasn't angry, I was happy that I experienced such a thing and that Mum and Dad had put in the effort to make the holidays that little bit more magical.

Then again I always raised to believed in faries, angels, god (however not organised religion) and magic, and I am happy that I was.

I do recommend you pass that on to your kids. It may allow them the chance to be the highest denominator rather than being dragged down into this plastic, pack, mentality we have going on.

i have no problem with the tradition aspect of the event i.e. spending time with family etc. what i do have a problem with is people coming together to do all that stuff under false pretenses....

and eze sure most of the time it does feel like 99% of the world is filled with fucking idiots but i kinda agree with lostpunk again, in that fostering the "ignorance is bliss' ideology isn't going to help the future world situation any.

Blah all you fun kill people.

Dont over analyse this stuff, its Santa... its not like your kids are going to see a psycologist when they realise santa doesnt exist.

At least it teaches right and wrong.

PS obviously i didnt read any post before I wrote this because it isnt an issue.

What do you actually mean by this? That there are alot of fuckwits in the world so you should tell your kids about them too? If so then yes because they need to know! (then again i'm not sure what your tryig to say exactly :\)

Backo - huh? how does Santa teach right and wrong?

the fact that you would write something like what you wrote doesnt deserve an answer.

Children learn right and wrong through experience.

Come on seriously.

but you just said that santa teaches children right and wrong (presents equalling rewards for good behaviour) You just validated my argument that xmas holds nothing but commercilism and it's actually being passed to children.

ner ner ner ner ner thanks! =D

someone brought up the fact that u should only be passing on things that u believe in to your kids..... ie we know santas not real so we shouldnt pass it on which might be the stupidest thing i ever heard

i should not pass on to my KIDS that 99% of the world are fuckwits, because they will figure that out for themselves as they get older, they might not be as cynical as i am naturally, so it would be wrong to raise them to believe that if they wouldnt think so of their own accord....

just because we know santa isnt real, doesnt mean its wrong to raise your child to believe in santa, they are just that, kids for gods sake, any child who would rather be sat down and taught about the environment and charity rather than open a whole bunch of gifts i feel sorry for to be honest...... you only get one shot at childhood, parents shouldnt ruin their kids by making them grow up too fast..... there is plenty of time to teach them about the environment and all that other stuff, its all about creating a fun little world for them..... who cares if none of it matters when they get out in the "real world", they will learn about that when they need to....

Meh, its a stupid argument anyway *pouts*

Why be such jonny come fun Kill?

Why dont u tell them that little Timmy probably also died in horrible pain?

^^ you mean..............timmy was in pain?

*runs off in inconsolable mental agony*

Hard to answer the poll correctly because I have a son (that's his eye on the left here...) - but he's too young to talk about Santa with.

I will probably go along with the whole Santa thing, but not push it too hard. I like the ritual of gift giving - there's no reason to miss out on that!

As far as "telling the truth" - anyone ever remember being presented the Rutherford model of the atom in high school, and then realising you had been lied to - there's no way atoms could actually be like that! Damn you to hell, quantum mechanics!!
