Several years ago I was hit by a car while walking and severely shattered one of my bones. This bone is deformed and causes me around the clock pain. My current doctor has me on 8 50mg tramadol a day. They aren't working. I have been on this for one year now. I have an appointment with a new doctor in a few weeks, and have notified my current doctor that I am seeing someone new.

The issue with me getting doctors to manage my pain is that I am 24. They do not like rxing young people, but they do for people I know in my age group who have no problems at all (they're faking). My problem is legitimate and when seen in an xray makes orthopedic doctors cringe. Anyway, my dilemma is that every doctor I have seen so far simply tells me to get it fixed. Okay, I have talked to two orthopedic surgeons. The first one recommended against it as my situation has higher risk of complication than most. The second doctor (one which my PCP sent me to) quickly mentioned that "most doctors would not perform this surgery on you, but I will, It will be difficult to fix, because of your injury is old, and the bone is so deformed, but I'll do it." He did not ask me if I had any questions, he completely downplayed the risks involved. I also tested him by telling him I smoke a pack of cigarettes a day. He did not mention anything whatsoever nothing no concern over the difficulties smoking causes for these types of grafting surgeries!! I believe my doctor sent me to him to get rid of me because she does not want to rx me pain medication, even tramadol!! They are in cahoots and he was going to help her get rid of me by performing a risky surgery that I dont want.

I am seeing a new doctor and I am just going to tell him that I need something stronger for the pain, that I am miserable, that I am not getting the surgery, and that the doctor I was seeing before just did not listen to me at all.!. I would like to know anyone elses opinion on this scenario. Doctors blackmailing patients into surgery because they are all opiate-phobes these days. I have no bad medical or rx record to make any doctor suspicioius of me, its just in theyre nature these days, and I hate them for it. I know for a fact they rx my friend opanas and norcos for mysterious "facial pain" he completely fakes. But I have a bone sticking out of my skin and can't even hang on to my tramadol without feeling like I'm being rushed/kicked out by my bitch so called doctor. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. This has been my issue for years and I want to resolve it, Its not fair to me to be treated this way, its unjust and Im tired of it.

If you are stable of mind then dissociatives such as ketamine or methoxetamine may provide some relief. I prefer dissociative pain relief to opiate. Opiates mask pain, dissociatives remove all the bite of pain. It becomes little more than a background noise. I've never dealt with the level of pain you're likely feeling but it might be worth considering.

As for opiates: until we become accepting of drug use as a society I doubt doctors will give young people the benefit of the doubt. Hell, doctors rarely respect the legitimate, researched opinions of their patients. Go to any doctor and say "I have X symptoms, from my research Y disease may fit the bill, so please give me Z test". Most will either brush you off and if you push it begin to act insulted. The state of the medical community can be quite frustrating for patients.

Stop taking the Tramadol.

Get the surgery, because you need it. Not because it's it something superficial, but because the path you are heading for is not the path you should be on if you want to live a healthy less painful life. I'm telling you this from experience, three years ago I was blown the fuck up in an IED. I had three vertebrate in my neck separated, my collar bone was shattered and my left shoulder was destroyed. I know chronic pain, and I lived through it everyday. I get splitting migraines and my ears always ring.

I was on Tramadol for the first 6 months after I was back on my feet. Tramadol is nasty, and it loses it's potency after a while of the same dosage. I went through Tramadol to Percies, and all the way up through the spectrum. I got to the point where I was taking 5 Tramadols at 50mg a day with 30mg of Gabapentin(sp?) and the pain was still there. This is after I was bed-ridden on Morphine drip. Then one week I just stopped taking everything. That first week I never felt so good in my life. Then the withdrawls came. Literally it took a week of not taking anything to even get my system cleaned out a little bit. After the withdrawl I went back to being almost completely pain free. The Migraines are all I get now. My spine looks like a jigsaw puzzle, I have a 4" Titanium plate holding my shoulder together and I can't for shit. I live almost pain free though, and feel a lot better pain free after not taking the medication.

What that Tramadol does is make you more sensitive to the pain when it's wearing off or not as effective, which after taking it as long as you have been it's not very effective anymore. Tramadol is an Opiate BTW.

Your doctor is looking out for your safety, and your future well-being in this case. You need to get your leg fixed.
