Feel the beat... not the "boom boom" or the "la da nah nah" but the "thwack", the snare or pop...
Boom ba da boom thwack, ba boom ba da bam thwack, boom la da chicka thwack...
You can snap your fingers to it... but theres one every four counts (3 counts for some music but same principle)... most people cant dance because they dont hear the root beat of music... or they cant separate it from the half, quarters, eighths, sixteenths ect... they listen to the notes or chord changes and try to move to that which doesnt work because those dont neccesarily match up or have a rhythmic pattern that repeats in the same relation to the main beat... you have to have your core movements matched to the core beat...
Line dancing is popular because its easy to learn... wether country or hip hop theres always a very defined beat... and you have everyone else to watch and learn from... and the steps are few and slow and easy... most have only 2 to 12 steps... and you always do them in the same order and start over every 2 or 4 counts...
The best way is to clap ar snap your fingers with the beat... do it while walking... left, right left "snap" (as that second right touches down)... thats a four count... next just walk in place picking up and setting down your feet... this is dancing...
Now step left forward and then step the riht foot up next to it, then left foot back to where it was and riht foot step back beside it... same count 4 steps, 4 counts... left right left right, one two three four, left right left "snap"...
Then side to side left foot left, right foot joins, the difference now is that to go back you have to now move back right you step again with your riht foot and then bring the left to join it... so its left right right left... or left right right "snap"
Then you can just keep stepping and moving with any foot as long as it stays on beat...
You can do it with one foot, left forward, left back, left to the side, and back "snap"...
Let your hips lead your movements, and let your arms swing a lil... to the same 4 count... but dont make the mistake of letting your arms double time your count... arms shouldnt move back and forth or up and down more than once every four count...
Left arm up, right arm up, left down riht down... thats a four count... or if your moving them both together you count it like; up, stop, down, stop... a "stop" is a little bounce or twitch... a "dime stop" is what i call it... whats going on is when you move both arms at the same time (or legs but thats more advanced) your taking the one two count from the left and the three four count of the right and doing them at the same time so you have to add the "dime stops" after each to make up for the other two...
Most importantly, all dancing is basicly the same... its all based on a core pattern of a couple of basic steps or moves that match the core beat of the music...
Practice in the mirror and check out youtube instructionals... its fun and easy and good exercise too
