Will Radiation From Japan Affect The 2011 Marijuana Crop?

If significant radiation hits California from Japan, how will this affect our $10 Billion marijuana crop? Will it be safe to smoke, or even make edibles from? Will the 2011 crop have to be tested with geiger counters? Will growers be forced to certify they were indoor-only? Or will we all be dead anyway and not have to worry about it?

Assuming there isn’t a world-threatening mega-meltdown from the Fukushima nuclear reactors – which could make the simple act of surviving more important than your next dose of medicine – what kind of problems might be caused for the medical marijuana industry here in California by drifting radiation from Japan?

The radiation that reaches the US will be insignificant at most. It won't affect your bud.

The real danger is to food, water, and cannabis alike, and it comes from microscopic particles of Iodine-131, a radioactive isotope

What else does a uranium nucleus fission into? Does anybody know? OK say you start with U-235:

235 + 1 (from the neutron that hits it) = 236.

236 - 131 (the iodine isotope) - 4 (alpha particle) = 101, which is close to the molecular mass of ruthenium.

So do we get iodine-131, ruthenium-101 and an alpha particle?

What does iodine-131 fission into?

People on the other side of Japan are not worried about the radiation at all because they know it wont effect them, then we have the USA who are buying iodine tablets on the other side of the world, amusing. The radiation is no way on earth to cause any amount of damage to your "crops".

You have to look into the radiogenic isotopic system of the parent, U-235 in this case. U-235 has a half-life of 0.7038X10^9 yr. Its decay series shows that it can break down into 231 Th, 231 Pa, and 227 Ac, as well as some other radiogenic isotope systems.

No doubt, that's what happens to it if you just let it spontaneously decay (notice that in each case, it has lost a multiple of 4, which is the mass of an alpha particle).

What's happening in Japan though: the uranium is packed into rods in such a way that it bombards itself with neutrons. The decay is forced (this is what's known as criticality I think).

Think about it for a second: if something that weighs 236 splits into several fragments, and one of the fragments weighs 131, there's no way the other fragment weighs 231 or 227.

I'm just curious is all.

How does Japan factor into the global drug sale?

They're not big importers or exporters of anything [drug related] right?

No way the drifting radiation, if any at all will make any impact in California. If the day ever comes & there is a nuclear war, then you have some serious concerns on survival alone.

I agree with LostBoys, I said the same thing in another thread, if anyone wants to know how a catastrophic meltdown effects surrounding areas just look into Chernobyl.

Also, the US didn't seem to concerned about radiation plumes when the Enola Gay took off, why should we now?

Most of the food you eat has probably been irradiated. The sun emits an unfathomable amount of radiation. Don't worry about crops 2/3 of the way around the globe getting ruined by radiation. It's not going to happen.

You know, carbon14 is a radioactive isotope of carbon that makes cells? Ya, living things are radioactive. Radiation is everywhere, and the only reason the news is blowing the story up so much bigger than it really is is because they want to distract you from what's happening with the ATF and gunrunning to the cartels, and the situation in Libya

There's significantly more nuclear fuel at Fukushima than Chernobyl. I believe that a good portion of said fuel has become corium and is exposed to the atmosphere. This does not bode well for Japan.

Somebody tell me why I am wrong.

what a stupid fucking article

negligible at best

take your scare tactics somewhere else

Agreed.

Really angers me how the second theres a nuclear reactor issue on the other side of the planet the first thing Americans think is OH NOES ITS GOING TO KILL US ALLS.

Talk about self-absorbed. Your weed will be fine. I would be more worried about the people of Japan than your bud harvest.

^ Agreed.

You guys do know that ACTUAL JAPANESE PEOPLE DIED, right? Families broken and lives destroyed....and all you care about is your weed? Fuck off, seriously.

I can see the suburban white boy dealers now. 'yo. you gotsta smoke dis Cali weed I gots. shits called Kryptonite, it's fucking radioactive bro man bro.'
