Hey,
I’m 18 years old and I live in Europe. I’m planning to see a doctor soon about recurrent panic attacks that I’ve been experiencing for over a year.
They started after a particularly stressful event. At first, I had significant anxiety, episodes of derealization, and strong hypervigilance toward my physical sensations. Over time, my baseline anxiety improved significantly, and I no longer feel particularly anxious in everyday life.
However, I still occasionally have panic attacks that can become extremely intense and difficult to control. Breathing exercises, grounding, relaxation techniques, and other strategies I learned from a psychologist can help to some extent, but sometimes they are not enough once the attack becomes severe.
I previously saw a psychiatrist who prescribed Tercian (cyamemazine) to take occasionally. I used it very rarely, but during severe attacks it mainly made me feel physically sedated while the anxiety itself remained present.
The main thing I would like to understand before seeing my doctor is how realistic it is that I could be prescribed a benzodiazepine for these situations. I’m not looking for regular treatment or daily medication, since my baseline anxiety is currently manageable.
I would mainly like to have an effective backup option for the rare occasions when I experience an exceptionally severe panic attack.
Would someone my age with this history realistically have a reasonable chance of being prescribed a benzodiazepine, even in a very limited quantity for occasional emergency use, or is this generally unlikely in Europe because of the risks of dependence and the fact that I’m only 18?
For thoses in Europe who has been prescribed benzos for anxiety do you think i will be prescribed benzos or my doc will find another solution ?
