Will mixing uppers and downers increase chances of dying? Also, coming down question.

Cartesian theater.
Always heard not to mix the two, but I've also taken a prescription sleeping pill when coming down from too much coffee (such a newb, I know) and was amazed at how painless that was. Didn't wake up feeling like I'd abused-my-body or anything, AND no long, drawn out and irritable the-world-is-ending coming down period. So, at what point is it okay to 'parachute'? By parachute, I mean 'take a downer to help with pain, anxiety, ... put me to sleep after experiencing an amphetamine (caffeine)'.

...I assume when the peak is well and over? Is there any danger with this?
Even though this is small potatoes drug interaction, perhaps, to you folks, and I could ask on Yahoo Answers, I figured I'd take this question to the mind/body/chemical interaction experts here at BL. :)

Thanks. Sorry if this post was too long.
Ugh, my mind hurrrts!!!:(:(:(8(:X:(

If you're just using it as a comedown aid it's usually fine, it's when you start redosing between them that it can get dangerous, as you're masking effects that would otherwise OD you.

What sleeping drug in particular are you talking about though?

Hi Engage, your question isn't too long at all, and BDD is the place to ask queries like that - doesn't matter how small!

"Uppers and downers don't mix" or "they confuse the heart" or some such thing is a popular myth but is not true. There is no inherent danger mixing uppers and downers for the majority of cases, with a few small exceptions (beta-blockers and stims being one that comes to mind). Benzos/opioids/other sleeping pills such as zopiclone, zolpidem, diphenhydramine etc are okay to take after stims. The risk, however, is that the stim masks the downer, causing you to take too much, then OD when the stim wears off. This is why speedballs (as in IV heroin and cocaine) are so dangerous - the cocaine is v short lived, and when it wears off users can find themselves in heroin overdose territory.

What sleeping pill are you referring to? It should be fine to take after caffeine, but "sleeping pill" is a pretty broad term.

Caffeine isn't an amphetamine - not sure if you meant that or not, but wanted to clear it up! They are both stimulants, however. Not heard "parachuting" used in that way before - it is commonly used to mean swallowing drugs/powder in a paper wrapper, which in the UK we call "bombing". Best to avoid slang for this reason :)

edit: nina naonnnnn <3

Klonopin. And, thanks you all...for the quick and thorough answers.
I'll remember that about the 'parachuting'...I wonder what you call what I mean then?
Grrr, I need to stop drinking energy drinks. Good lord I feel horrible. :(

Anyways, thanks...I'll be asleep soon, I hope.

Klonopin should be fine to combine with most stimulants, benzos are very benign when they're the only downer you're taking (as long as you don't take too much and black out)

Though I think the best thing you can do if you want to avoid comedowns, is to stop drinking so much caffeine =D

That caffeine monkey's got me by the boo-boos, though!

"I'll buy these energy drinks to wean myself from coffee.
I'll take these caffeine pills to wean myself from the energy drinks.
I'll drink a little of this instant coffee to get myself off the energy drinks and pills."

Caffeine was my step down from a 10 year alcohol problem.
Booze and cigarettes, replaced with a stimulant and DSL. lol.
I'm so much healthier now than I was, and thankful for that.
But, got some hard work ahead, letting myself down gently.

Let's hope!

I always thought that opiates were in fact bad on the heart when mixed with stimulants. For instance, I was under the impression that if you mixed coke and heroin it could lead to cardiac problems because the coke wears off much quicker than the heroin and leads to a quick decrease in heart rate. Not to mention most people would keep doing the coke the rest of the night so I would think it would put major strain on the heart because of all the mixed signals it is getting. I have no proof, but IME taking my suboxone with ethylphenidate gives me an extremely abnormal heart rate along with palpitations sometimes. Though this never happens with my prescribed vyvanse which might be because it is just as long acting as the suboxone.

effie gave a great post!

hahaha as many people can vouch for me, i have taken amphetamines with opiates, benzos, and alcohol and i have been fine. the only problem is that the stimulants potentially mask the sedative effects of the downer making someone feel like they are not that intoxicated and can drink more, pop more xanax, ect...

mixing is HIGHLY dangerous if you dont know what you are doing, but downer + upper is slightly safer than downer + downer.

This is a subject that i have always been lacking full understanding of and would like to have a few things clarified.

Whenever i have taken large doses of Amphetamines i usually have some opiates nearby for later. I find that i get fairly significant hypertension when coming down off of a large dose of amphetamines and that Oxycodone, or ms contin usually does a great job at bringing my blood pressure down as well as heart rate. It also gets rid of nearly all the anxiety related to the stim comedown.

Is this a safe combination? I always thought it was, but i will occasionally run into opposing point of views.
