Why would 5-HTP kill a roll when a serotonin rich diet does not?

From my personal experience, and the anecdotal evidence, preloading with 5-HTP can mute the effects of mdma.

Why would 5-HTP kill a roll when a serotonin rich diet does not?

Seems counter-intuitive.

I don't personally think that people need to take 5-Htp to help them with mdma.

I find eating certain foods (and no not eating healthily necessary and all that yadada), and taking a minimum of 1 month break, Leaves me in such a state.

I took a 150mg mdma capsule, pure mdma crystals, and when i come up, was so hard, i didnt even gurn, it was a pure open mouth smile like this =[) In fact, i could hear and feel my jaw crunch the second it hit me and my mouth swung open, I also lost vision for about 30 minutes, then i seemed to have a psychoactive stimulant experience shall we call it? Pure Bliss.
Every time.

Overall it lasts a good 5 hours minumum (effects lessen obviously over them hours)

I imagine it's because of MAO enzymes, which are very good at breaking down serotonin. If you eat 5-HTP, (some of) it ends up as serotonin in your brain. If you eat serotonin, it's metabolised before it makes it to the brain.

5-HTP is converted into serotonin in your brain. It does not cause the build up of it.

This has been a very thought provoking reply for me. It makes sense that increased serotonin means increased MAO, and that extra MAO kicking around in the brain would dampen the MDMA experience.

Could a case be made that the "loss of magic" phenomenon is due to increased/strengthened MAO response after chronic MDMA use? With repeated use of MDMA, does the brain adapt by learning to gear up, to more rapidly and abundantly produce MAO, to tackle all the extra neurotransmitter molecules?

Mods, can you move this thread to ADD?
