Why Widespread Panic?

I've never gotten to see them yet. I'm really sad I missed them opening for Bright Eyes, that must have been a good time.
It seems like the stuff they do at record stores are sometimes the sweetest renditions.

i'm not gonna lie.

it bothers the shit out of me when WSP gets lumped into the whole jamband category.

they are ass kicking southern rock, that happen to be pretty decent at improvising face smashing jams.

great answer.

i've always found it interesting when people are told "band x sucks" but they choose to hear "band x sucks and you like band x therefore you suck", or such.

why do some people take it so personally when somebody else doesn't like a band they do?

alasdair

i never said anything about that. it just bugs me when panic gets lumped into the jamband genre.

i wasn't talking (only) to you you. my response was a segue to a more generalised discussion.

i'd ask you why it bugs you but i guess i already know - "because it does"? i still think your annoyance about them being lumped into the jamband category is related to the question i asked.

does anybody else have any thoughts (beyond "it just does")?

alasdair

my annoyance with them being coined a jamband has nothing to it has nothing to do with this statement:

i've always found it interesting when people are told "band x sucks" but they choose to hear "band x sucks and you like band x therefore you suck", or such

i never said anything remotely close that. i could give a rats testicle what other people think about WSP.

and here you go, i'll bite. panic and phish got big on the heels of the grateful dead, so in a sense they are pioneers of that "scene". but, over the years, every gay frat boy with shaggy hair that could come close to playing an instrument picked up a band, played a bunch of long songs while high on acid and birthed what is now the "jamband" scene.

there are so many hacks playing in "jambands", that the whole thing kind of annoys me. then you have panic and phish who are actually really good at what they do, getting lumped into the same category as these no talent ass clowns.

is that better? are you jacking off now?

leave the loungefail in the lounge?

you didn't really answer the question. you feel that wsp have talent. others feel they're no talent ass clowns just like the others. why does somebody else's opinion of wsp annoy you? why do you care?

alasdair

CR, he's just trolling and i love him for it.

please show me where i've made any mention of caring what someone else's opinion on wsp is.

all i did was answer your question as to why it bothers me that they are lumped into the jamband category.

i think moe sucks. others don't. big deal. different strokes.

you're trying a little too hard right now, but that's ok.

hippies died in the 60s, the grateful dead were the anti-hippie by the 80s

anyone who claims to be a hippie today has identity issues and is more than likely a beautiful faerie princess.

and personally, imo, there is no such thing as a jam band, it's just a derogatory genre description for people who enjoy shitty music

i wouldn't call it deragatory, but it's highly inaccurate.

phish and panic couldn't be any more different in terms of music.

i guess you can call any improvisational rock n roll/blues/jazz/country/folk band a jam band

consider me a jam band freak then

dear 'bands', if you take the stage, and are getting paid, please don't just regurgitate your most recent album or play the same songs the same way every single night

get creative or gtfo

i will say that i'm a big fan of totally righteous jams.

mountain jam is better than dark star.

just sayin.

you sound like my dad

he's more of a deadhead than peachhead, but doesn't care for DS, PITB, and TOO spaciness....i'm really not too into DS either, but if i'm dosed, fuck yeah

i used to to think playin in the band got boring as hell when jammed out, now i love it, specially that moment when they creepily get back into the main theme(great ring tone, imo)

my boss played the DP 29 at work today (5/19/77 fox theater), what a sick sick PITB sandwich PITB>UJB>Wheel>China Doll>PITB)

WhYDOYOUCARE!!?????

seriously?

who cares why he cares and why you care why he cares
i'm trying to have a discussion. on a discussion forum! the nerve!

if you didn't care about others' opinions, then their lumping them in with those other bands wouldn't bother you. you demonstrably care and i'm just interested to understand why.

because the term jamband is gayer than a handbag full of dicks.

i could care less if you think panic are a bunch of no talent hacks.

i just don't like the term.

and to your point of this being a discussion forum....what would it matter if it totally pissed me off that people didn't like panic and i wanted to talk about it?? it's a discussion board where we talk about our likes and dislikes.
