Why we see geometric hallucinations

Did a quick search, don't think this has been posted before.

An article by Marianne Freiberger looking mainly at the work of physicist Paul Bressloff and his studies as to why we commonly experience geometric hallucinations from psychedelia substances from a mathematical perspective. Discusses form constants etc. It's kind of dense reading but interesting none the less.

Excerpt
An object or scene in the visual world is projected as a two-dimensional image on the retina of each eye, so what we see can also be treated as flat sheet: the visual field. Every point on this sheet can be pin-pointed by two coordinates, just like a point on a map, or a point on the flat model of V1. The alternating regions of light and dark that make up a geometric hallucination are caused by alternating regions of high and low neural activity in V1 — regions where the neurons are firing very rapidly and regions where they are not firing rapidly....

Full article can be found here.

Thanks! I've been looking for an explanation of this for a long time.

Very cool. I especially enjoyed the link to that little math application that lets you play with numbers to make patterns.

Try entering 25 for both fields and changing the colors to black and white (or something high contrast).

I always assumed it had something to do with the way your brain perceives three dimensional space, but this article had a lot of detail. The connections to other methods of pattern formation in nature is kind of mind blowing. Hooray maths!

I believe this has been posted here before, I don't know if it got lost in the prune or what. Its a great read, though. :)

Very interesting. Humans are always trying to recognize patterns in everything we see.

what explains shared hallucinations? like doing alot of L and seeing pyramids with the eye. is this a conformation bias or am i the only one who has seen the pyramid thing?

my bad if this is poorly worded :P

Way back when I did 300mg of DXM hbr with 2 extremely strong blotters when I was a high schooler, I freaked the FUCK out for about ten minutes and just laid on a bed so barely there. When I looked up at people asking me if I was alright, all of them were glowing a shimmering golden shade and a close friend of mine was wrapped with an intricate pyramid with a full detailed eye of Horus on top, at the time I recognized it from the dollar and later told him that night about dollars wrapped around his skin.

I know all about the eye of Horus now, but at the time I was unaware of its proper name. Weird shit. Seeing that was during my initial freak out when the trip developed, I was in awe when I looked up at the moment but it wasn't what set me off. I was outside and was offered a cigarette, soon after lighting it I threw it down and ran inside to my bed because my ears were about to shatter with a ringing sound. I am pretty sure it was a distant pool motor or air conditioning unit looking back, but it was ridiculously distorted lol.

I lol @ dismissing of the strangeness of drug induced hallucinations just because there are highly interesting studies on our brains role in how we see fractals. The fractals are highly interesting but replicable by artists. (albeit harder to make them crawl through your senses like psychedelics can) I am more weirded out by way, way, way more complex forms of vision taking form in my head when I trip than just patterns about.

geometric patterns,
0ut 0f everything i have tried,
mushrooms are the only that have granted me this,
which leads me to believe,
dmt, 5 meo dmt and yage,
will show me much of the same,
in terms of geometry,
had this on salvia too now that i remember,
it wasn't too intense,
but it was as if i was feeling with my skin what i was seeing.
very weird,
unlike a lot of people i really like salvia,
i think it has anti repressive quality,
much like ketamine.

I only get geometric patterning and fractals when I'm on a very potent dose of high quality substance, and even then rarely. I've read that many of the phenethylamine 2C-x class present strong geometrics, and I've got some of these on the way (-E, -P). DOC is also coming, and AM-2201.
I really want to get stronger visuals, so I ordered some of the compounds which seem to be the most visually active, and now I'm interested in specifically watching intricate geometric patterns. Any tips on which I should try first?

I think metocin (4-HO-MET) might be a pretty good candidate. Take a lower dose (20-25mg) and smoke some weed. Intensifies the geometrical visuals many times over for me. %)

Although I have to be honest, at other doses I've gotten mostly "organic" visuals, and sometimes only very complex and shifting patterns, so stick with it... :)

Both 2C-E and 4-AcO-DMT have provided me with very geometric and fractal-esque visuals, so it's nice to see that there's a common basis. Those kinds of hallucinations were so unavoidable during my trips, that I was always thinking about why it was happening.

I took 2 drops of very nice lucy on the tongue yesterday and hallucinated harder than I ever have before, which is crazy because last week I took 5 hits of the same stuff and tripped out of my mind. I was getting crazy octagon type things covering my vision connected with swirling colors/dots, like looking through a psychedelic veil. Crazy closed eye visuals too but not really geometric

^I totally got that octagon visual from 2C-E! The first time I did it, I was looking at a computer screen, and it was like this clear octagon layer was put over the regular screen. Nuts.
