why LE types use the plural and refer to MethamphetamineS

Whenever people (mostly law enforecment or the media) refer to the drug methamphetamine they always say the pluaral form methamphetamine. It it sounds stupid because we don't do it for anyother drug. How did this start and why hasn't it been corrected? Or am I missing something about it?
