Why isn't mitragynine (Kratom) scheduled?

The Aus. govt. doesn't need a reason. They did the same with salvia here. Basically they just make something illegal if they see no good use for it

The DEA has considered scheduling it, but they don't seem overly concerned about the drug as of now. They even mentioned in a report about kratom (I think it was a 2004 microgram bulletin) that they are aware of people using kratom as an alternative to methadone maintenance.

Garuda, if you think that PST isn't a serious opiate, you seriously underestimate it as I've found it to be capable of the same effects as strong prescription opiates. There is even a case of a death from overdose of PST.

Oh I know it is, I was just trying to give everyone an idea what my use involved.

Because I have seen people claim to love kratom and kill their withdrawals when they use IV heroin or methadone daily, and if I just using PST can't feel the kratom I don't see how they could.

I don't place them on a linear scale, kratom has (better) qualities missing from codeine.

Socialbility, I get a little free-er in talking to people on poppy tea and codeine but with kratom I really want to be with them. I will talk to people, strangers or otherwise much easier.

I'm happy to walk around on kratom, I would use it at work, uni, going into town on errands. Maybe that's the stimulant effect? Even though it doesn't feel "stimulating". I was just as happy laying around as well.

I've had plain leaf, the old hard resin, various powders and those new gold capsules. I favour the hard resin but my usual vendor doesn't stock it anymore, the plain leaf works of course but the resin is easier to work with. The powders never achieved the desired results for me.

You need media hype for them to know what the cool kids are getting high on. I can't comment on the DEA, I don't know how it works in the US but the banning of mushrooms in the UK was a publicity stunt. The fact that fresh mushies were freely available in headshops was in the papers so the government made it illegal to make The Public happy. I can't see the same happening to kratom, for a start some of the way it's marketed in headshops is never going to make it overused. Joints? Pfft. It's fans arn't going to attract the attention that psychedelic users attract either.

^ Hah - that was the first visual image I got on my computer screen when I first starting looking into Kratom a few years ago; sure makes it look promising, eh? I personally have had good times with Kratom, though I do agree packaging/vendors such as the aforementioned do stick out.
