Why isn't methamphetamine bigger in Europe?

This is just something I noticed and was curious about...often on BL, in discussions regarding methamphetamine, I've seen users post things like "I'm from [insert European country] and meth isn't that big here", etc, and I was just curious about why this was. I know that there's plenty of speed in Europe but the absence of meth, especially considering it's popularity in other countries like the USA or Australia, seems curious to me.

Or maybe this is just a misconception of mine?
 
I know it's big in certain parts of Eastern Europe, and has small circles of users in the gay scene in some major European cities (namely London), but otherwise I'm fairly sure you're right.

And I have no idea why, it seems insane to me that someone would choose dirty, jittery racemic amphetamine sulphate over clean, smooth crystalline d-methamphetamine. It literally baffles me.

I've always wondered why it wasn't more popular over there too. It will make it's way there, it's almost everywhere else anyway. Wonder since it so unpopular if people could just easily procure what it take to make it(not suggesting you do that, tottally unsafe and unreccomended if you don't want to be a severe burn victum or dead). Like there was this guy on intervention addiccted to oxy and used the Shake and Bake method every week to make his own Meth, then one day while he was doing it, it blew up and he had all these burn scars all over his face...And I use to know someone that would always talk about making it that way, and that he use to cook up the best stuff when he did it..anyway, wouldn't be anywhere near a methlab,kabooom.
 
We just don't have it in Belgium. It's impossible to find this via local sources. To obtain it here you'd have to order it via the internet or do some other risky stuff which I prefer not to do.

Here in the Netherlands I often hear that we already have troubles enough with regular amphetamine and it's potency, this isn't America where everything has to be bigger, better, more, more, more.

Same here, I love regular amphetamine. Meth would consume me.

@Pill i've encountered it but agreed it's so difficult to find, not worth your time (and the price). wtf pilletje van df xD?

I have to see lots of different speed in eastern europe and don't really know how to tell if it's meth or regular amph. Whenever police busts someone they always tell it was meth in the news articles but nobody in the streets call it meth. It's also never in crystals, only powders and wet oily buggery looking clumps. Meth is so much easyer to produce and is so much stronger so why bother with reguler base. This makes me wonder if in some other places people are using speed not knowing it's meth.

Sounds like amphetamine sulphate or something. The whole amphetamine powder/paste phenomenon is something that is non-existent in the USA, the closest thing I can think of to it is sometimes someone will sell MDMA (or whatever is trying to be passed off as MDMA) in powder form. Other than that the two types of amphetamine that are commonly sold are pharmaceutical speed like Adderall, and crystal methamphetamine.

Interesting remark. Personally when I am here in America I hear people call meth by its name often but while in Canada (where I spend 6-7 months a year) they just call it speed but it's most definitely methamphetamine and potent one at that I am told by reliable sources. Perhaps users feel a little more secure trying to convince themselves they are not doing meth?

Yeah, the vast majority of those white pills are methamphetamine with caffeine (source). Most casual users of speed pills aren't aware of this fact, though, so the pills don't have the stigma that crystal meth does.

Uh-uh. Was given such a pill in your neck of the woods once that was supposed to be MDMA but me was suspicious so me gave it a little torch. Trying to hide among the smells of various burning chemicals was that unmistakable aroma... meth. Haven't touched it for 21 years but that smell is etched into my memory. Despite a certain chemical affinity MDMA and meth don't smell alike at all when heated.

In london it's mainly in the gay clubs and that's why I think most other people don't realy wanna touch it because of the stigma attached to it.

And plus I don't know a lot of people that want to try something new, everyone just seems to be stuck in their ways where I am.

In today's politically correct, all-inclusive America attaching a stigma to gay people is frowned upon. So those of them who use meth are called tweekers just like everyone else who does. But trust me you don't want to be known as a tweeker, it's one of the most pejorative epithets one can be slapped with even if the slapper is himself a self-destructive abuser of any other drug.

People like the dextro levo mix because there's less negative side effects than with meth, or so they say. And they shoot it up and say that it's a "completely different drug" when used IV. Probably a case of tradition/culture too.
 
why should it be big in europe? with speed you have euphoria, energy and all the typical stimulant effects that are nice when partying. you snort a few lines during the night, then go home and sleep. you'll get the positives (albeit a bit less intense i imagine, but it suits the purpose) without greatly reduced nasty side effects, and addiction potential. besides, a party drug that has a multiple hour long comedown and doesn't let you sleep a long time after the last dose just isn't practical.

ephedrine is not something rare either. just a few years ago you could buy ephedra by the kilo for cheap in pharmacies and caps with ephedra extract were all over the smart shops. when i started out partying and didn't have the right connections, i took ephedrine almost every weekend.
sure, regulations are a bit tighter now (though you can still buy otc cold medicines with pseudoephedrine, which is perfectly fine as a precursor), but back then meth was even rarer than it is now.
