Why ecstasy is 'vanishing' in UK
Ecstasy was responsible for the major drug scare of the 90s. Yet the death of Leah Betts did little to deter the public, with demand and supply rising throughout the next decade until pills cost just £1.

But now ecstasy seems to be disappearing from the streets. Ed Davey reports on how changes in supply half way around the world are affecting drug use in the UK.

For years, drug-takers have visited internet forums to compare ecstasy pills.

Websites are used to compare samples of the potentially deadly stimulant - to warn users from bogus pills or highlight pure batches.

But investigate sites today and you can tell change is afoot.

"When was the last time you had a decent E?" writes one British user. "They never seem to do much these days, what's happened?"

'Steroids and caffeine'
Another drug taker from east London wrote: "A couple months ago me and my pal spent £100 on a hundred pills.

"My pal got nicked and police came back saying they consisted of steroids and caffeine."

Metropolitan Police statistics confirm a year-on-year drop in ecstasy possession.

In 2006 some 1,197 people were caught with ecstasy in London.

In 2007 that fell to 984, then to 773 in 2008.

And the most recent figures available for last year show just 331 were caught.

Some have attributed the apparent fall to a new trend in the drug scene, with users opting for so-called legal highs such as mephedrone, a plant fertilizer, or recently-banned GBL.

But anecdotal evidence suggests drug users resort to such drugs in the absence of their traditional drug-of-choice.

'Can't buy it'
Another user wrote online: "The only time I've come across real MDMA in six months is when someone dug up their stash that had been buried for a year.

"Ecstasy used to be easier to get than a packet of fags - people buy mephedrone now and pass it off as MDMA, it's just not the same."

MDMA is the active ingredient in ecstasy. In the past criminals made it easily because it was simple to obtain chemicals used in its manufacture from legitimate companies in the Far East.

But Rossen Popov, of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, told BBC London such precursor chemicals are now tightly restricted.

He said: "It has become more difficult to obtain the precursor chemical.

"For example, between 2008 and 2009 only two countries exported it and the total traded was less than five litres."

He added: "China is the only country where it is manufactured, but in small amounts under tight control."

Harry Shapiro of DrugScope has also seen a fall in ecstasy use.

He said: "If you can't buy it, you can't buy it - that could be to do with this issue of precursor chemicals.

"If you lack the chemicals to make it there will be less around.

"The figures suggest MDMA is harder to get at the moment than it was."

A particularly large seizure of precursor chemicals was made in Cambodia last year.

Seizures of precursor chemicals by drug enforcement agencies are seen as good progress.

Ecstasy causes numerous annual deaths in the UK, although despite the publicity, an inquest into Leah Bett's death found that it was actually excessive water consumption that caused her death.

The drug caused her body to release anti-diuretic hormones, stopping a normal level of urination that could have saved her.

Now other chemicals are filling the void left behind by ecstacy.

And unlike ecstasy, which has been taken for 20 years and has well-known side effects, users taking new substances remain guinea pigs.

'A paralysing mania'
Mr Shapiro said: "Former legal highs BZP and GBL are legal no longer.

"But the biggest surprise has been mephedrone which has come into the mainstream."

Among the side-affects of mephedrone, which replicates the effects of ecstasy and can be legally bought online, is poor circulation.

Users complain of knees or fingers turning blue.

Andy Capper, editor of London-based Vice Magazine, tried some for an article.

He said: "It was the combination of sadness and fear and felt even more dirty than cocaine.

"There was also a paralysing mania. I felt totally insane."

He continued: "I was terrified of every car that came past. Each one sounded like people coming to tell me about all the bad things I'd done in my life, or kill me.

"There was a fear of death, but the sadness was so intense it negated the fear."

Another quality article there from the BBC peppered with loaded phrases and technical inaccuracies. Feels like it was written by someone with an agenda, or at the least, a slight prejudice.

If anything since Europe opened its borders..... There should be more drugs...
The UK is a full member of the European Union. However, unlike most other
member state they have not adopted the Euro as currency... they still have the pound sterling.
The pound is worth more than the Euro.... So you would guess more people Import there because of the profit margin...

so, what do we learn from all this?
when law enforcment succeeds in diminishing the supply of drugs people turn to unresearched, much more dangrous ways to get high. what a resounding success! 8)

not when in central europe the prices for pills are at 10€, which is way above what you in the UK are used to.

Owh gruayeet moar brileeant jernalizum 8)

Tis true though, there's a definitely lack of good pills and MDMA powder / crystals :\ Shame really, as it's such a lovely drug to partake in every now and again. Haven't had any in.. probably 3-4 years now or something. Possibly more actually.

Maybe manufacturers realized they can sell their goods for 5x more in the US and Australia?

IMO it's just a combination of factors
-people burnt out on real MDMA
-people sick of shitty pills
-legal/semi-legal RC's

But MDMA will never disappear. I can't imagine that ever happening.

Things generally don't disappear, they just become more expensive and difficult to obtain. Again, it gets down to who you know... :)
Time to legalize all drugs and stop prohibition, as the drug war didn't work.

I wouldn't put the US in the 5x category currently. MDMA pills seem about 1/2 to 2/3 the price the UK is seeing, and widely available to boot.

Here's my economic theory for why you have the shortage. Supply was good, but that was in part because precursors were cheap. This meant pills and crystal were cheap. The price of mdma pills was also influenced by the pipes flooding the market. There was little differentiation by the average buyer between mdma and pipe pills. Shit pills sold and good pills were priced lower to compete. Both types sold for the same price give or take.

Your saving grace is the market fragmentation that is occurring. There is a price division, pipes at the lower price and mdma at a significantly higher one. Manufacturers now have the incentive to meet that demand even if they have to use more expensive precursors to make mdma.

As a greater portion of users switch to the mdma camp by paying a premium the supply will began to meet that demand.

There is plenty of supply in other parts of the world. Just not at 1 pound a pill retail.

I still don't understand how the shortage could be so UK centric. We have shit pills in the U.S. but they are usually the recognizable cutouts and they never made up more than 1/3 of the pills. Sure, there are weak pills, adulterated pills, but plenty of medium/high mdma pills making the rounds.

yes its all about demand. the more people are educated on what pills are bunk and what pills are legit, the more people that will only buy legit pills. resulting in a higher demand for legitimate mdma, which would naturally result in a growing supply as there is much profit to be made. my 2 cents

i've toyed around with the idea of handing out "business cards" of sorts with links to search for pill legitimacy to friends and people at clubs etc... if the word spreads about how to make sure you are getting the real deal, demand for the real deal will skyrocket. hopefully resulting in more supply. however this could backfire on me and just make it harder for me to get the good shit haha

Australia is experiencing a significant lack of MDMA at the moment too. Lots of shit pills around with very few good pills (MDMA).

Theres truth to this article.

Dankstersauce, they sure as hell ain't sending the MDMA over here to Aus, pill poppers over here are paying out their asses for SHITE! Things really are dire right now, the odd thing is that it can't be put down entirely to a shortage of precursor chemicals because MDEA seems to crop up a fair bit. I don't really get why anyone would manufacture MDEA over MDMA, the process is exactly the same but one chemical is substituted for another depending which one you are trying to make. I don't imagine out of the two chemicals I am talking about one would be harder to obtain than the other.

Perhaps they (the makers) are thinking:
"Oooh, a chemical the mainstream won't have heard of... Maybe we can get more money for this" even though it's not as good :\ Silly things like that.

Canada has some nice pills ., and Molly can easily be found .

There's no shortage here .

And alot of the pills and Molly are decent .
Apart from the occasional pill being a god dam pipe :(

I've never had trouble getting quality MDMA in California. It probably helps that we have two of the worlds largest ports and that our country shares a long border with both Mexico and Canada.

Very unfortunate for you British, the crackdown on MDMA precursors seems to be causing much more harm than good.

UK truth

in the last 2 or 3 years i have not seen any good pills or mdma crystal at all and it is a real shame. yes there is bk-mdma wich will have to do now but thinkin back it is nothing on proper MDMA.

all the pills about now are totaly crap and keep you up for a not needed amount of time.

i could go as far as saying the MDMA scean were i am in the UK id officaly DEAD!!

Psyk!

Same here mate. :( I haven't had any decent MDMA for literally years... same with Ketamine.

its only been a year and a half since good crystal could be found- in the mean time let the market for false substitues bottm out...

STOP buying pipes or they will be all there ever is

STOP buying mephedrone too as its fucking your health something rotten

so china restricted supply of safrole (quote) "China is the only country where it is manufactured, but in small amounts under tight control." (quote)

and surprise surprise china makes all the mephedrone europe scoffs and a vast amount of RC's, any shock there?
