Why don't people in NSW write "NSW" in their addresses?

calm down :)

doon hit the nail on the head though - that culture *definitely* exists in sydney, and i was just applying it to the entire state because a) i was semi-joking and b) i'm real fuckin' lazy and just figured you'd all know what i meant anyway...

what about the ACT/NSW postcodes? I get confused sometimes.....

I was about to say the same... I am almost certain that ACT post codes start with a 2 as well, so it doesn't necessarily reflect the state. I have also had Sydney post codes which do not start with a 2.

Either way, I am New South Welsh living in 'The Smart State' (mwahaha) and I always did put NSW and always have put QLD ever since moving :p

I'm a new south welshperson living in Qld for the last 10 years. I've always written NSW in my address while living there (although I do feel that NSW is the superior state and writing the name of the state is pointless, heh) and er, people, the Q instead of QLD thing, well it's just sheer laziness really. Nothing to analyse.

I always write the full state name: South Australia, Queensland, New South Wales etc

Australian addresses just look so short :\

But really, since the post office sorts via post code (or so they would have you believe) I guess it's not necessary for you to put the state on there.

there are some GPO boxes and things like that in Melbourne that use their own postcode aswell. The crazy thing is they don't start with a 3 at all they start with an 8, which would mean not everybody can tell where a letter is from by just the postcode. And considering Taliana's post was totally wrong (vic starts with a 3 tas starts with a 7) this proves my point even more. Also some states have suburbs that are the same just to make this more confusing. Sure, the letter will get to it's destination with just the postcode, but it's more convenient for people to see NSW or QLD then you know where it's come from or where it's going instantly without looking in the auspostcode book.

So, in short WRITE THE FUCKING STATE ON YOUR LETTERS YOU PRICKS!!!! :P

^right on. Also, on the borders, some people will have a 2xxx postcode and live in VIC, and vice-versa.

So where else can the letter come from?

hehehe....I'm allowed to laugh at this now, I'm a Sydney boy...

SLM's right though....I get the same thing working in call centres. 9 times out of 10 if somebody doesn't give you their area code when they give you their phone number you can assume they're from New South Wales.

And something else that's interesting....9 times out of 10, when talking to people nationally, they'll always assume that the call centre is in Sydney.

I think in many ways, Australia is still a very parochial country (not sure if that's the correct term). There's a definite idea, especially among older generations, that Sydney is the only real centre of business/commerce etc in the country...

Melbourne still rocks out though. =D

^ Coming from somebody is looking for a change of job I can tell you that if you write Sydney off your location list, you loose more than half your opportunities. Sucks really, because I have no desire to move to Sydney and I mean none (not much desire to stay in Melbourne either). I'd love to get a job near the coast in Queensland somewhere despite the shitty pay rates and the limited opportunity to further your career into greatness. The quality of life resulting from clean fresh air and the abundance of cheap fresh fruit at every second corner is something that cannot be measured.

heehe, here I was thinking you were getting cut about calling it NSW instead of New South Wales. I always write New South Wales instead of NSW; its stupid not to. Though I come from Newcastle (soooo much better then Sydney) and not many people know where East Maitland is.

Why does every other state seem to take the piss out of Qld'ers?
We're not that bad are we? maybe you're all just jealous! :p
