Why don't I itch off opiates?

No matter what the dosage of opiates I take, I DON'T ITCH! Seems weird, but I love it. Don't have a tolerance, but I could take 40 mg Hydrocodone, get high as hell, nod out, etc. But no itch. Not taking antihistamines or any anti-itching agents. Anyone know what's going on here?

It sounds like you know the itching is caused by a release of histamine in the body. Some people just don't release any histamine when on opiates. I'm pretty sure it means you are not in the least allergic to opiates, which I'd like you consider a positive thing! :) I myself itch pretty much on any opiate.

It's a very personal thing, some people get it, some people don't. It's also dependent on the drug you use - codeine and morphine are some of the "itchiest" ones. the synthetics are usually much less itchy.

Oh ok I was just thinking about that. I used to itch off Codeine but after a year of being off them I just didn't itch. I learn something new everyday!

As sekio said, synthetics typically produce less pruritis (itchiness) than codeine and morphine and there is a substantial amount of variance in this. I'm also guessing if you're high enough that you might not notice going at your nose or face as without really realizing it. Many people who use opioids start to break out and can't figure out why but it's because they are constantly touching their face (especially their nose are) without realizing it.

Either way, all we can do is speculate and sekio covered pretty much all we can say on the topic. If anyone has reason to reopen this, shoot me a PM.
