Why does Xanax work sublingual but not snorted or plugged?

Alprazolam is insoluble in water and thus can't be absorbed in your muccuous membranes in your nostrils in the case of insufflation.

It does have a high lipid-solubility so I believe, don't quote me on this, Alprazolam in a milk solution will have some effect plugged. It should be dissolved in a solvent like Propylene glycol.

With such as high oral BA at 90% whats the point?

From experience, a sub lingual yields the best effects. That is, if you can handle the chalky bitter taste.

it's not that xanax will not work at all when plugged or insufflated, just that it isn't worth it.

It works through all of these routes and is stronger than many will lead you to believe through nasal/ rectal admin. I agree sublingual/ oral is the best overall, but snorting/ plugging does set in quite a bit differently.

I understand that with the high oral BA you wouldn't need to use any other ROIs- but why does sublingual still work if its not water soluble?

I think it's something to do with how it's in very close proximity to blood (loads of blood vessels in mouth), and as there's constant saliva being generated, it just slowly diffuses across. Plus at least part of it is gonna end up swallowed.
